Love the show. Hate having to deal with braindead takes about episode 3 from people who clearly don't have a clue about what the story is even supposed to be about.
@yahhah3027
@yahhah3027 Жыл бұрын
I kinda prefer the idea in the game that Bill is a bad case scenario for Joel if he doesn't care about Ellie enough and pushes her away. I don't like what the show did where they show what Joel should do and then with zero subtlety spell it out to the audience in a letter. Also there were some dumb moments like the whole raid scene was laughably bad where Bill would stand out in the middle of the road because the script needed him to be shot (which led nowhere from what I remember), and the raiders just keep killing themselves on the fence like NPCs. Bill was also way too trusting of Frank for a conspiracy theorist and I think there needed to be a time skip before he started falling in love with Frank. I also think some people need to admit that if Frank was female, people who both loved and hated it, and the writers, wouldn't have cared about the relationship as much. See? there are some valid reasons why some people might not like the episode instead of being braindead. Most of the critiques of the episode that I've heard have been along the lines of what I've said. It's unfortunate that these complaints have been overshadowed by the vocal minority homophobes and fans who blow off all criticism as homophobia.
@shrill_2165
@shrill_2165 Жыл бұрын
@@yahhah3027 The first stuff you said about the letter and your preference for Bill as a bad example rather than a positive example is the kind of criticism I really resonate with. I appreciate that you brought those things up. This is the criticism I view as important and not of the "braindead" type I mentioned. The raid scene, from my POV, had a clear purpose but I agree that standing out in the open was a dumb way to have Bill shot. This is the sort of thing that makes the episode worse, but certainly not bad imo. Whether there was a time skip before Bill opens up to Frank, I'm indifferent. I feel I can easily head-canon that sort of thing as "Frank's years of isolation lead him to feel very lonely, so at the first opportunity to REALLY open up to someone (i.e. through the un-repression of his sexuality) he goes along with it". He likely would not have done so if the person was not as warm as Frank. This leads me into the "imagine Frank was a woman" point I've been hearing from a lot of people. This does not seem like good criticism at all imo. Bill's entire relationship with Frank is underpinned by the fact that Bill used to be 1000% emotionally repressed and closed off from the world. Having their relationship be a gay one, instead of a straight one, enhances that foundation significantly imo. It allows the viewer to see Bill's repression much more tangibly, and this really elevates the whole point/theme of the episode. Saying that a straight relationship would have been categorically similar is straight up just wrong from my POV.

@@yahhah3027 Episode 7 was a straight adaptation of the DLC, so I'm going to disagree with you on that. It develops Ellie's character, giving the audience a more solid understanding of her.
@Joe-ww8uw
@Joe-ww8uw Жыл бұрын
@@yahhah3027 Because they used their runtimes to build on characters/the world of the show to better convey the themes. I think Episode 3 is used as kind of a contrast from all the other episodes to show some characters having an actually good ending. They outlived the clickers and the raiders and managed to live a fruitful and long fulfilled life together, loving one another, and this goes to show Joel that it's what his journey is working to and that's why he should keep going. I think that them showing their happy life together makes this message more profound and hit deeper and more personally. And Episode 7 is to build on Ellie's character, to show that she has dealt with losing someone she loved before and that she doesn't want that to happen again with Joel. I think showing these relationships onscreen and giving the audience the time to watch the characters really develop makes it all the more heartbreaking for when they die, and those nicer moments more endearing to watch. In episode 3, the theme of sexuality is definitely very important since Bill had suppressed his homosexual tendencies most likely, making his character more fleshed out and impactful. However the same case can't be made for episode 7 as there's never an emphasis on either of the character's sexuality and their relationship is just totally natural, however this relationship is still almost just as impactful on the audience and serves the story just as beautifully. Both episodes build on the characters and worlds in a way that following the normal conventional plot just couldn't. The little vignettes that this show gives (like the episode 1 & 2 openings as well) give this show much more context and meaning, while also actually amplifying itself from the original source material. The point of porting this story over to television is to give the story more time to breathe and more time for people to care and live in the world of The Last of Us and I'm glad that they actually took advantage of that.

Like with Joel, Tess, Henry, Sam, Bill. I was completely dialed in and was thinking of them as the video game characters but Ellie is still outside of the box for me but she is doing so well that I have them in two different zones. Game Ellie and Show Ellie, but she is doing great if that makes sense.

Something so incredibly grating about the HBO series to me is this. Why does it even exist? If somebody wants to experience the story of TLOU, play the games or watch them. This cheapens the game performances. Don’t watch some carbon copy, alternate actor, discount adaptation of a phenomenal set of games and Naughty Dog’s effort within them, unless the show inspires watchers to actually go and play them. Some people may say it was made a show because the games were so great, but why couldn’t they have just been left alone as they were?

Oh, I love the game, but I do not like Predo Pascal acting in the show, the dude feels like he's sleeping. He doesn't seem violent at all, hell, in the previous episode he BEGGED the sniper not to try anything so Joel didn't have to kill him (In the game Joel straigh up just killed him because in this world you don't take chances and can't really trust anyone). I don't feel the bond between Joel and Ellie and the show looks good but at the same time it feels cheap and empty (I know the world is supposed to be empty but it just feels weird here)
@katherinevalenzuela2696
@katherinevalenzuela2696 Жыл бұрын
The SHOW overall seems to have limited the violence. Yes, the characters are very tamed for having fought for survival 20yrs in the apocalypse. Never mind that end of the world started with Joel losing what was most important to him. The dude started a fight for survival with already having lost so much. So the way Joel in the game is at the beginning is amazing. Pascal is doing a good job (in my opinion) but the direction they're taking the characters is very tamed. Also Bella Rampsey was super miscast. Like the lady in charge during EP 5. You had to TELL me that lady did hardcore stuff to rise to her position, but there was no SHOWING. I could not believe her as hardcore rebellion lady. It's not the actress fault, her casting was just bad. Not everyone fits into a certain role. Good casting can help with good characters.

I know I’m 3 months late but thank you! He is TERRIBLE in this! I have no idea wtf people are talking about when they say it’s a “masterclass” in acting. It is the epitome of bad acting. He’s literally reading his lines in the most monotone voice possible, looking a little grumpy in every scene he’s in. He has Joel on the very surface level if I’m being generous, but he captured none of the subtleties that make the character. I usually don’t mind him, but I don’t really think he’s that good of an actor and he was an absolutely horrific choice for Joel, and that’s not even mentioning the changes they made to the character.

They ruined a lot of characters in the show by drastically changing their stories in very hamfisted ways. I liked the subtlety the game used to really make a character seem genuine and not cartoonishly sympathetic like the show constantly does. That Karen character in episode 4 and 5 that acts like a school teacher talking down to children 100% of the time was so overtly annoying that it figuratively made my ears bleed everytime I heard her dialogue. I don't mind when shows or movies change characters and stories to make their adaptation work but this is just not one of those times. Everything feels forcefully dumbed down and episode 3 is extremely overrated. Bill's story in the game was much more realistic and heartbreaking then the cartoonishly stupid story they went with that involves a fence with automated flame throwers and turrets as they live in a nice suburb with unlimited energy for decades. Episode 3 was truly the stupidest shit I've ever seen in a post apocalypse show. Also the actress that plays Ellie does a terrible job and acts nothing like her. It's like she just thinks Ellie's whole character is cursing and cracking jokes. Again I'm not even a big fan of the game but it definitely blows the show out in terms of writing and character development. The show is just stupidly cartoonish for something that is trying to be gritty and realistic.

@@Indigo_1001 just said I saw 5 episodes. Sorry if you think an automated flamethrower fence and unlimited energy sounds realistic and a paranoid survivalist doing everything to survive with limited resources 20 years after the apocalypse doesn’t to you. Despite giving characters more screen time they found a way to make them less believable. Bills story was sadder in the game and had a better character arc. He also was a good reflection of what Joel could be if he didn’t have anyone in his life. His story in the game ultimately affected the characters more and provided better insight of the world they lived in.

I remember before I had played the Last of Us (and it took me a long time) I was watching a video essay from a games critic about writing in video games. And in it, they pointed out that even the writing in The Last of Us would barely distinguish it from mid-tier direct to video fare. But after I played it, I couldn't help disagreeing. I felt like I had just experienced something that would have felt fresh and heartfelt in any medium. It just happened to be a great story that was wrapped up in a Stealth Action game. It would have still needed subtlety and deft direction, and someone like Uwe Boll would have absolutely butchered it. But there was always a rock solid foundation for a competent team to work with

I also really love the show so far (6 eps in). It gives me hope that we'll get more of these high quality video game adaptations in the future. I do think it's a big missed opportunity to not have Bill interact with Joel & Ellie *at all*. Episode 3 itself was amazing, but I was kinda disappointed by the lack of Bill in the main story. Just a few scenes, doesn't even have to be an entire episode.

Pretty much everyone I talked to has loved the series so far but I have heard that, "Why did they add all the extra stuff, it is just padding out the story and it is a waste of time." Honestly. The extra stuff has been well done and build into the already good story. Like sure, I already know the dinner is going to be nice but BREADSTICKS TOO? SHEEEEESH. Which would you rather have? Add a couple hours of context that honestly builds the story deeper and is great for non video game players or have master chief make out with some random girl? You pick which video game show you wanna watch. Don't even mention the resident evil soap op with iPads.

I agree, I love the little changes they made to the story because it makes it interesting. Episode 3 was definitely my favorite along with the last two so far. I kinda wonder hope they’ll do Part 2, seeing how everyone was so divided about the game. This will probably be more tricky for them to navigate for sure. Especially with Abby being in 70% of the game.

Yeah I think it's funny how many people drag Neil Druckmann for TLOU2, when he was also the director for TLOU1, and all its DLCs, and also one of the lead writers for the show. It's the same guy, with the same vision and the same voice, so whenever I hear someone complain that Part 2 is "disrespectful of the original" I just have to laugh. It's called "Part 2" because they're literally meant to be two halves of the same whole.
