I don't buy the whole competency argument. Dramatically for the ending to work, the Fireflies had to be capable of a cure. That was obviously the intent of the developers who grounded it in character choices. IT's the way the movie of The Mist likewise depends on the soldiers coming at the end not being psychos who will mow down survivors. Joel's actions were absolutely selfish and self-centered.

Yeah, I don’t get this interpretation of “he knew the fireflies were incompetent”. That sounds like an excuse. Joel’s an anti-hero, a hero with some un-heroic traits. He’s loving and protective of Ellie, but in a selfish way that leads to his ruthlessness in defending her. He wanted to save Ellie because he loves and cares about her and like you said, to save himself from that pain.
@Pekka.Pekka.12962 жыл бұрын
@@theashenstorm5509 Actually that’s the point why I felt horrible watching the last scene: Should I have played with that character who turned into the enemy of humanity because of selfishness? And Marlene was also right about Ellie’s motivation: she would have sacrificed her life for the cause as well. Joel robbed everybody (killed Marlene who cared for Ellie, lied to Ellie) becase he wanted to have a 2nd Sarah by all means. However as a father somehow I could see the justification behind that decision. So it’s very controversial and makes me think about it for a while. That were my feelings at the end. Watching Troy Baker acting the scene out (they filmed all the voice actors in those 'mocap' suits to make it easier to match it in the animation process (over and over 15+ times)) is emotionally harrowing. He speaks about the process he uses and that really hits home to the pure emotion involved in creating something (dare I say) so real. The child actor really brought it for that scene.

It annoys me so much when Joel first wakes up in the firefly base and Marlene says “It’s lucky we turned up when we did.” As if they were the ones that saved Ellie. Even though they were the ones who knocked out the man who spent a year travelling with the girl and was already performing CPR. Yes it’s made clear they weren’t aware it was Joel and Ellie in Marlene’s diary but c’mon. I get they might believe it’s a trap but standing back would have been safe. Not once do the fireflies thank Joel. They just steal his sh*t and then send him on his way. Without his gear and weapons. IN A ‘ZOMBIE’ OUTBREAK.
@GoblinKing-im2uz4 жыл бұрын
Not to be that guy but on the topic of the CPR: Ellie had drowned and her heart had stopped, if she was actually alive she would have coughed up the rest of the water as Joel forced it from her lungs when compressing them. CPR is used to forcefully pump blood around the body whilst putting fresh air into the lungs through mouth to mouth. CPR doesn’t restart a heart, you have to wait for someone to use a defibrillator. That’s why you can’t stop once you start because their heart will just go back to not working. So for Ellie to survive the fireflies must have restarted her heart and so Joel was indeed lucky that they show up in time as Joel would not have been able to bring her back without a defibrillator. But I do completely agree that the self righteousness of the fireflies was infuriating and kind of unfounded as they they are completely irresponsible. They couldn’t even prevent monkeys they had just infected from biting them!

There's a lot that goes into the ending, I definitely think a big part of it is the competence of the Fireflies; but one thing I don't hear people talk about enough is the sentiment of *sacrificing the few to save the many*, which is how Joel lost is daughter in the first place. It's something that Joel and Ellie agreed was a shitty thing back in Pittsburgh (right before entering the quarantine zone). Joel would've had to essentially lose his daughter again for the same damn reason, both times with no clear evidence that it actually would've done any good. Think what you will about the sentiment itself, but it's set up from the beginning to be something that has only provably done Joel harm.

I feel like you made a lot of really unfair criticisms of this game. Like then you said that Ellie gave Joel some kind of magic drug. She states earlier that she needs antibiotics which to be fair are often injected directly into an open wound. Not to mention antibiotics are in fact quite the miracle drug. Look at the rates of death from infections caused by large open wounds before and after their discovery. It's very possible that the antibiotics were able to bring Joel to a state where he was conscious enough to remember what happened and realize that he's in a completely new location and Ellie is nowhere to be seen. Edit: Also you have to take into consideration that quite some time has passed between Joel being hurt and waking up. It entirely possible that the wound is mostly healed. And that's why Ellie is looking for antibiotics as opposed to something else. She's not worried about healing the wound, she's worried about fighting infection, Joel's number one problem faced from impalement other than blood loss, which we know is no longer the case. You have to think about the fact that this is pretty much his first time regaining consciousness since the injury and he woke up realizing the perhaps the only person in the world that he cares about more than himself is in danger. I'm willing to bet that he could pull together some hustle.
@AOZMONSTER5 жыл бұрын
Great point. Maybe Luke needs to spend a few days shadowing an ER nurse. Joel does sort of stumble a few times as he sets out and I agree, in that situation you just get it together. But I would like to add to this. The criticism of the shootout at the camp while in pursuit of Ellie was just ignorant. Ellie was distressed and in flight mode. She would not have had the sense to avoid bandit camps and furthermore she would have been moving so quick that she very likely made it through so fast that the bandits would not have had sufficient time to react. Now, you could stealth this section, but the way it is set up makes it very difficult. I wholeheartedly believe that this particular fight was not meant to be belabored over. You are in rushed pursuit of someone you are growing to care for. You are meant to blast through this fight in excess. Ellie has just stirred up this nest and you are meant to rush through it. You still don't know if she is alive or even still fleeing and you don't have time to delay! It is also very likely that some of the bandits split off in chase of Ellie and made a wrong turn. This would explain the later party that attacks the farm house. Since they were not already dwelling in the farm it may be that they were not initially aware of it and upon returning to a dead camp, they would have known that more had come through behind them. Either way, after a dozen play-throughs I never found it unnecessary at all. It always made sense. They probably made quite the ruckus racing through like that. And it was very likely the base camp for the earlier attack on the damn. The attack on the damn: I do remember there being some miscommunication regarding security check ins which is why they had to head up to the generator to begin with. I could be wrong so I don't have a very good response for this one. But they must have had a reason for being so vigilant at the front gate when they first arrived. I would only guess that they are dealing with regular assaults from bandits from time to time. And lastly, the quick-time-events in this game are some of the best placed ones I've ever experienced. They are consistent enough that the button use isn't a complete ambiguous mystery and not so frequent that they become a chore. And Joel's fall over the rail is supposed to feel like a failed event - BECAUSE IT IS!!! Joel nearly dying is not a win. He becomes mostly incapacitated and as he bleeds out his body is resisting hypovolemia. His body is likely shunting off his extremities in order to keep the blood in his core and he would be struggling with walking and staying focused. The pain and realization of near-death would also be tremendously overwhelming. It is very common for victims to faint from the fear alone in this sort of trauma. I found the sloppy and non-responsive controls only adding to my frantic mood and drawing me in more to the moment. I found myself holding my breath while lining up shots. It was genius. Even on following play-throughs I realized that the timing was designed so meticulously that it was not possible to ruin the events with preemptive aiming. It was a trick pulled off very well! And shooting zombies while hanging upside down... Who bitches about that???? What other game has ever pulled that off as well as naughty dog did? Have some fucking perspective! Otherwise, great review ;)

He wants to cry about how it doesn’t matter but then cries on about it like it really does matter. I’m suspecting that’s not what really has him bothered. It’s really a character just being LGBT in general and he disguises it under the “oh I’m not a LGBTphobe but-“ act that countless people like me has heard over and over. Also I don’t know how to explain to y’all that y’all should care about other people. Our disagreement is not merely political, but a fundamental divide on what it means to live in a society.

@@comphethime4966 why should i care about people that don't affect my life. i care about the people that are close to me and everyone else can do whatever they want. i don't care who or what you want to be and it's so naive to think that completely random people should care about other peoples problems when they have problems of their own. call me a transphobe if you want but it doesn't change the fact that we're under no obligation to care about your issues when most of the time i've disagreed with someone from the lgbt community i've been called a transphobe for having a different opinion on a specific subject. i don't know if those people have been basement dwelling keyboard warriors trying to start a fight. the first two sentences are the exact reason why it's frustrating to interact with members of the lgbt community. you diminish our opinions because we disagree how you want your entertainment to be. bill and ellie are perfect examples of how you should do characters. yeah they're gay but that's not the only character trait they have. same with joel he's not preaching about being straight like bill isn't preaching about being gay. that's how you should write characters and not make them simple and shallow with no depth.

Great video!! But in regards to Robert's part in the beginning, in my opinion, besides teaching us how to "play the game" how the world is after 20 years, you also have to take in consideration that, without Robert, there is no Marlene, and without Marlene, there is no Ellie. They are after Robert because he sold their guns(Joel and Tess) to the Fireflies. So Marlene has no option since Joel and Tess killed Robert as to make a deal with them. So to me, it is all connected in a very thoughtful way. Even though Robert has all his mercenaries at his disposal, Tess and Joel are way more ruthless and skilled than any one of them, so I guess it makes sense that they are able to take them down. Otherwise, nothing more of the game would make sense, since Joel and Ellie are able to take down larger numbers of foes and infected during the game.

Ikr i was really upset that only some human enemies drop their ammo even if they have a weapon. And infected drop ammo when they don’t have a gun like wtf
@adamscaife69315 жыл бұрын
I noticed that too, like why doesn't Joel pick up the assault weapons the soldiers use just after Tess' departure? From a gameplay perspective, I think it's because Naughty Dog wants your ammo to be restricted for the sake of tension and creating a sense of "surviving" encounters, rather than a traditional kill-em-all action game. However, it does come at a cost to the sense of realism for those that notice it.

I think during the Winter section, they DO put an emphasis on Joel’s wound. Admitably less than they maybe should have, but they do. He wakes up and winces. He stumbles onto a counter once he exits the garage. He runs slower and holds his wound while he runs. During the torture cutscene, he is still holding his wound and limping as he moves about. Then, they do kinda let it go to be honest- but it’s not true that they completely let it go. Through my playthroughs, I’ve always noticed that they put an emphasis on that; at least at first. They definitely could have done more later on in the chapter, but I think it’s unfair to say that it’s a full disconnect from reality
@scottstots72382 жыл бұрын
Absolutely man, I think they did it perfectly could you imagine if the last 3-4 hours of the game were spent with Joel handicapped lol in reality I think that wound would’ve had him out of fighting for at least a few weeks probably longer.

I don't understand the commentary near the beginning about Robert being in "debt" and that not making sense because he "has a lot of men." He's not in debt to them, Tess literally says she got jumped by his men and they stole Tess & Joel's gun shipment, so they go to get it back. Robert having a lot of men explains why they were able to jump Tess & why they felt confident in doing so. Robert wasn't "in debt."
@shemothy4 жыл бұрын
Invalidationcoded At the same time, Robert is someone they have associated with previously and seems to be pretty important in regards to society within the QZ, and in that respect it would be kind of crazy for the two of them to blast into his territory and kill him and a bunch of his men. It seems like the kind of thing that may have some sort of long term consequences unless Joel and Tess were already planning on abandoning Boston.

Maybe I'm the only one but I assumed that David was going to "have his way" with Ellie in the restaurant before she kills him and that was why she lost control in killing him and the scene afterwards with Joel was so emotional because like Joel says earlier they've already had a lot of close calls.

Definitely an attempted rape scene, especially because of the way she breaks down when she says “he tried to-“ and Joel immediately understands and that pushes him over the edge and he calls her babygirl for the first time, like he used to call his daughter. People have tried to kill them both a thousand times, it wouldn’t have been that impactful to them both, it had to be the implied rape.

Great job, Ultimate commentary is the right title here :) 2:04:00 : I think Joel did it right by saving Ellie. The Fireflies would have been too incompetent to produce a cure for mankind, Ellie would have died for nothing. Later in the TLOU Part2 she screams that she was supposed to die in that hospital and her life would have fu**ing mattered if she did so. Again I think thats false, she would have died and the chances of a cure would have been very slim at best...

Even if this were true, you don't have to approve of people being gay. Tolerance is the only necessary condition for a functioning society.
@pstmdrn_werewolf Жыл бұрын
@@ValiantInstance It is true because he literally says it lol. That said, while you're correct about tolerance and society, I prefer flat-out acceptance in folks whose reviews I consume. The point of watching a review, for me, is that the reviewer and I have similar sensibilities, thus allowing me to trust the reviewer's review and make a decision about whether or not I want to purchase something. edit: to be clear, he says this game in particular does a good job of fleshing out a homosexual character, and that he "doesn't mind" that there's such a character in the game. my beef comes with his (and others) dismay when a character's "only quality" is that they're queer. This never seems to be a problem if the character is straight. If the character just loves going to church and loves their wife, there's no outrage, even though all we know about that character is that they're religious and they love fucking women, because there's more to loving your wife than fucking, it's emotional and romantic. Instead, Luke reduces it to "preferring sausage over a ham sandwich," which is.....I don't know how to describe it, insulting? But i'm not insulted. I guess....disappointing. How many poorly written straight characters are there in the world that get a pass but if there's a poorly written gay character it's like mah diversity! Stop forcing it on me! Give me a break.

Hi! I really liked your review and game analysis. I have a couple of comments, though. The first one is that in the end level you can get shot by the Fireflies while carrying Ellie around, it happened to me precisely because I thought I was safe so I didn’t worry about them AT ALL. Another thing was that to my understanding, Maria was in charge of the village, not Tommy (not that it actually matters). Also, your AI companions can get detected by the enemies. It happened to me with Ellie in the Pittsburg level and with Bill in the high school level with a clicker (having Bill around, to me, was really annoying because he messed up my stealth a lot). I played the game on hard, btw. I also wanted to say that I really liked your take on why Ellie is all weird and low energy after the final David level. I always figured it was because of what she’d been through with having to do all this killing herself and actually experiencing first hand what being a survivor meant in this world, rather than because of what may come at the hospital. I mean, I still think my option is a good one, but now I think the two might be correct.
