If there is something missing from this episode that you'd like me to comment on let me know and I'll try and answer it in the comments or in next week's video. Thank you for being here! 👇

I would tell Ellie everything I know, in a SAFE PLACE if possible, in simple enough terms that she could deal with it, so she can be safer. I would also encourage her to use her brain in a fight to find new ways to protect herself that maybe no one else has thought of. And I think Tess was very smart to tell Ellie that it was important to keep her alive because she wasn't immune to being ripped apart... so that Ellie didn't take unnecessary risks.

This is such a critical line. Tess loved him, wanted him, his love. Joel ‘accepted’ Tess in his life, ‘loved’ her in his own way, but never allowed himself to be attached to Tess, to give in to love. He could not allow for that, because (inevitably) losing more ppl he cared for in his life is not acceptable (for his sanity), nor does he think hes worthy of love (because of ‘the things we’ve done’). Better (to convince urself) not to love at all. This is also why he walks away at the end, NOT because he blames Ellie (thats his excuse). He cannot allow himself to be there longer, because then he would have to recognize his feelings. Setting off on the mission is the better alternative. Of course the only reason hes doing the mission is Tess and Ellie and Sarah, he just hasnt realized that yet. Nowhere is this explicitly said, in neither game nor series (i doubt theyll make this super explicit in the upcoming episodes), but all the hints are there to pick up on all of this. Its masterful story telling and i think Anna is giving an amazing performance here.

It's kinda funny that at the exact moment you said "I wish we could know everything going on in Joel's head" was the moment that he glanced down at the broken watch on his wrist, smiled a sad little smile, and then suppressed it before heading to the ladder. So we know Ellie is reminding him of his daughter, and he's already fighting the urge to like her and care about her, so as not to risk loss and grief again. :)

i would absolutely tell ellie everything. i’ve been in situations as a kid where people withheld information from me to protect me, but really it hurt me because all i was was scared and confused and unable to process anything around me. you would definitely have to be intentional in the way that you tell her things, because she is still only 14, but 14 in an apocalypse is definitely a lot different than 14 now. she would definitely be able to handle it. joel thinks she can’t, because his instinct is still (and always will be) to protect. he wants to shield her from the reality of the world, because he couldn’t do that for sarah.

Ellie expresses kind of a childlike grief, as if she’s lost a parent, or the closest of one. She doesn’t have a mom or a dad to grieve per say, but the way Tess treated her, like she was a caretaker, and maybe, to Ellie, what felt like a parent, makes it easy to understand why Ellie didn’t want to leave her behind. She wanted to know what having a family was like, is what I am getting of this show.

spoiler: in the game, her mother is Marlene's friend. the game didn't tell us any details but we all assume she's a orphan long living with Firefly and knew Marlene for a long time. Tess is my favorite character in the entire game. I've always seen her as the spark of hope for Joel to finally accept Ellie and accept that there may still be hope, she's the bridge between Joel and Ellie. There is a shot where we can see Ellie illuminated by the sun, then Joel in complete darkness and Tess is right in the middle of both of them and I think that's a really beautiful shot.

The opening scene for this episode was incredible. As a gamer who played this game, I wasn't given any insight into the infection, so it was a treat to watch a scientist confirm the ophiocordyceps. I think Joel and Tess should've told Ellie about the Clickers beforehand and trust that she would be able to handle the knowledge well. I mean, Ellie had to deal with the trauma of getting bitten, and no, she wasn't alone in the mall. This is why Riley was mentioned in epsiode 1. I heard they added in the Riley and Ellie story, so that's gonna be a hard episode to watch whenever it shows up. Lgbt community is gonna have a sob 😭 fest.

I am surprised that you skipped the line where Tess says she never asked Joel "to feel the way she felt." Hi there! Loving your analyses so far! In answer to your question, I would've told Ellie everything up front that way there are no surprises for her and she knows what's coming. When I was a young kid in a small town in Texas, we were at a little league baseball game that my brother was playing in. I remember the wind picking up and all of a sudden I was being told to leave right away with my family. I remember I kept asking what was going on and nobody was telling me anything. And instead of going home, we went to someone's cellar. I found out later on when I got much older that there was a tornado in the area. And to tell you the truth, I was actually more scared not knowing what was going on back when I was a kid than the tornado itself.

Oh my goodness, I would definitely tell her everything! I mean, she maybe 14 chronologically but not emotionally. She's been thru some shit. I felt so bad for Joel! Trauma of any kind really sucks but when you continue to lose people you love, over & over again, it changes you.

I found it so hard to answer the question you posed to us. Mainly because I stopped myself from going with my immediate response of "I would tell Ellie everything" and really tried to think about the entire situation. Of course, we never know how we would react in general, if we were in such an extreme situation. Within lower-stakes situations in my life (lower-stakes in comparison to the show, but still critical within the context I was in), I have experienced both wanting to shield people from ugly situations and provide hope, and feeling it necessary to provide them with all the information so that they could themselves make informed decisions. Even though I would prefer to always do the latter, I found that personal bias got in my way a lot. Which is to say, that if I had an incline that the person might make a decision that would result in me losing them, if they were given all the information, I found it hard to not withhold some things that might lessen hope. What I found interesting in the show is that while both Tess and Joel didn't give Ellie all the information she needed, I think that it came from different places. I believe that Tess chose to withhold because she was hoping against hope that they wouldn't come across the Clickers or something horrible that Ellie had not experienced already. She knows that Ellie has already been attacked at least once, and she knows that she has also experienced loss. Joel on the other hand, has got no hope at this point. And he hasn't had hope in a long while. He expects Ellie to die, and so he is keeping himself detached. It's kind of ironic, because he himself seems to be the kind of person that wants to have all the information, perhaps because the last time he didn't know what was going on he lost his daughter. But at that point, Ellie is just cargo to him. This is not him shielding her, like he did with Sarah, it's just him not really communicating with Ellie at all, so that he won't form any kind of bond with yet another person he will potentially end up losing. This show is incredible. And so well acted. I know what is going to happen (the important beats at least) and it still manages to produce big emotional reactions from me. I can't wait for the rest of your videos on it. And to finally answer your question, I think I would probably take a similar approach to Tess when it comes to giving Ellie some (but not all) of the information.

I think the certain amount of information would make the most sense. Telling too much could also cause anxiety for a future situation that may never occur, expecially for a kid who has never been in this. Ellie obviously isn't someone who panics like most, but she's a kid and they don't know her or her mental state besides the single night with her. I could imagine a scenario where they say hey, there may be clickers in this building, resulting in a freakout not wanting to enter, making their job way harder.

I’m in AP Psychology and we recently learned about the defense mechanisms and it seems like Joel was going through displacement when he lost Tess, he couldn’t face being angry at Tess or himself and instead seems to blame Ellie since she is the most suitable person to be angry at, preferring to believe she is the reason (besides Tommy) they went out of their way, resulting in Tess getting bit.

Here five months later, with my own answer for your question at 14:27 Me as I am now, I would probably give a version of the third option. She's still a child, with a certain view of the world, and with little experience as too what the world entails. Even if she won't need it, I would likely want to preserve as much of that "innocence" as possible, regardless of what should actually be done or whether or not that's even necessary, or even if it made them hate me later. If I was in this world? Almost as long as Joel and Tess? Definitely the first option, at least when it becomes evident that it's necessary. Joel and Tess's lack of an explanation as to what a "Clicker" is (although this can partially be attributed to the fact that Clicker's hearing is exceptionally good, and even explaining it could place them in a lot of danger anyway) ultimately got Joel and Ellie nearly killed, and sealed Tess's fate. I don't know whether or not I'd give her the full rundown before or after an event like this happens, I haven't lived in Joel's place (And hopefully never will). Ellie being clueless and carefree (not exactly what she's like, but that's not the point), or anyone really, is a liability, and likely to get themselve and/or me hurt, infected, and/or even killed. Maybe, I would refrain from telling her for a while, but the moment that it becomes apparent that she does not have the necessary information to go forth safely, I'd give her the full rundown.

Okay! FYI: I had forgotten the part where Joel attacked the Fedra Officer and had that moment of PTSD. It's a bit hard for me to 'project myself' into Joel, as I've noticed that even though he is with Tess, he doesn't seem to 'really be with her' albeit he does rely on her for many decisions... "IF" I didn't explain it to her before then, then I would have at least tried after that. I'm a technician by trade, and have daily deadlines, at times I need to form a team to 'get the job done.' The more my team knows about the situation the better they can 'prepare' and execute it. "Grieving Tess": "Terrible People"/"Bad People"/'etc.' For me it's more that the people so far that have said such are in fact good people, but they realize and understand that they've done 'bad things.'

QUESTION: Joel and Tess treat Ellie pretty harshly, Joel even more than Tess. Ellie is a tough girl and she can take it, at least she doesn't seem hurt by it. But what if she was softer than she is? Knowing what you know about Joel (since we don't know much about Tess), would he go easier on her? Part of me thinks that, yes, he would, but I can also imagine him being even more "annoyed" by her vulnerability and actually end up being meaner. I could see her fragility (if it showed) triggering anger/frustration in him, maybe because of a deeper weight in responsability that would come with it. On the other hand, I think Tess would be more approachable. But that's all speculation. What do you think about that? ps: I'm brazilian and I hope my question was understandable. I would tell Ellie every detail along with a step by step instruction of how to react to each situation. That minimises the chances of her getting me killed.

As someone with anxiety to the unknown I’d want to know exactly what I’m up against. Not sure if what Joel has experienced would effect me to where I would withhold the details from her. But I would not be that calm going into it.

From a small, defenseless vulnerable little girl i would also keep info about bad things from, we can have nightmares and phobia about smaller things.... There are even adults that would panic instantly, would break. They not yet know Ellie's personality, and that she can handle such info. Of course if they need that information due to direct danger, it must be given.

7:50 ish A very interesting, difficult and unexpected thing that I experienced in my therapeutic journey was a period in which I had worked out my feelings of guilt and shame of the situation itself but I still had to try to manage this idea of guilt that I felt when I realized I wasnt feeling bad about that experience anymore. Its such a weird and somewhat contradictory mindset which is why it seemed so unexpected to me. Cuz if I have realized that that experience wasnt my fault and I genuienly feel that then why do I still feel this weird feeling of guilt about actually getting better. So in a sense I guess I still were not truly through with it at that point eventhough my general mood and mindset got better.

@The Truth Doctor Show, Hope you don’t mind but here are two Recommendations for a reaction due to the subject matter’s focus on bullying/revenge which are two Korean tv shows one is Weak Hero Class 1 (one season 8 episodes) and The Glory, 16 episodes but are being released by Netflix in two parts so the first eight are available while the other eight will be available in March.

I would give Elle enough information that I judged would keep her safe in the current situation. She might get paralyzed with fear and information overload with too much information, and no information would get her killed

Another great review. In the game they only made allusions to Joel's past after the outbreak began. I hope we get more in the series. As for telling Ellie, I would tell her everything but in the episode she was just cargo. I wouldn't have given her a weapon either. The loss of Tess was just heartbreaking all over again. Can't wait for the next episode.

I would go over every detail of what we could face outside the QZ with Ellie BEFORE leaving, even multiple times, and have her start reciting the information back to me. I wouldn't have anyone with me outside the QZ who didn't know what to expect. All it takes is one person making a single mistake to get everyone killed. The lack of relating such information to Ellie is likely the cause of Tess' death. I wouldn't want anyone making any unnecessary noise either. Ellie was distressing to me with all her loud relaxed banter. The whole time I was thinking, "Shut the F@#$ up! Shut the F@#$ up!".

I feel like in a way Ellie saw Tess as a mother and don't get me wrong I absolutely loved to see your perspective of Joel's loss But I was quite curious to see your perspective of Ellie's loss as well because Ellie didn't really have anybody who cared for her until test came in well of course there was Marlene but other than that Ellie was a loner also considering that EP 7 SPOILERS Also considering that Ellie had just lost Riley 3 weeks ago she was going through another loss already But I I really really wanted to see You're perspective of Ellie screaming "we're not fucking leaving her!" while Joel dragged had to drag her out I'm upset that I missed out on that but it's okay because you did wonderful at everything else in the video 100/10 fr

8:18 Five Gold stars for the set designers top tier job. 12:58 (The jump scares are strong in this one.) Ten GOLD stars for the make-up team. Ten Gold Stars for the actors as the Clickers. Soooo scary. Perfect Jump Scare. 19:25 Tess is a Superstar in this moment. 😢 #PapaJoel 14:31 Absolutely I would tell Ellie everything, make sure she had firearm training (likely from F.E.D.R.A.) and give her a weapon.

Troy Baker said that they built pretty much a whole city, and a lot of other Buldings just for this series. It is really amazing and totaly worth it. He also said they bought of Homes and completely destroyed them to make this set look so real as possible.

Good afternoon, Doctor Courtney. I was wondering if, after you finish reacting to this show, you could react to Accused on Hulu. It’s a show that talks about a different scenario that family’s go through that makes them ask “how did I end up at trial?” The first episode is going to be hard to watch, but as you are a licensed therapist, I’d really appreciate learning from your insight into the first episode and remaining episodes that will be released as well. I loved watching you react to Wednesday. And truly enjoyed your insight in to the complexities of Wednesday, as a person, and other complexities of that world and this one, as well. Just like you say at the end of your episodes, “I’m so glad you are here, and I’m grateful you exist.” Have a great day.

The Tess scene drove me nuts. She dumps like 20 grenades on the ground and then proceeds to mess with a lighter for dramatic affect. I get why the writters did that, but I would've rather her used one of the grenades.

Becoming a fan, only found you through my obsession with The Last of Us... From your commentary following the two episodes, it seems to me that you feel the depictions of grief and coping and things like that are all very accurate; I'm curious if there have been any shows you've tried for this channel that completely flew in the face of what you'd consider to be the expected behaviors?
