Ömer Fahreddin Türkkan[1] (1868, Rusçuk - 22 November 1948, near Eskişehir[2]), Turkish soldier and diplomat. He is especially known for the Defence of Medina, which lasted two years and seven months, which he led in Medina under difficult conditions during the Sharif Hussein Rebellion during World War I. He is known by the nicknames "Medina Müdâfii", "Turkish Tiger", "Desert Tiger", "Hero of Medina".

he did not surrender. excerpt from the memoirs of Lieutenant İdris Sabih Bey, one of officers in medina defence : when they caught him(Fahrettin Pasha), he asked his sword back and asked for they let him to the tomb of our Prophet for the last time. he has been asked why? he said : "i'll surrender my sword only to its rightful owner". he entered the tomb. sat in front of the grave of our Prophet. he cried :"O Messenger of Allah. I defended your city until I ran out of strength. be my witness in the judgement day." he left his sword next to the tomb of prophet and then forcibly soldiers removed him.

You should have mentioned that, the moment they were about to surrender, a wave of locusts appeared and the soldiers caught as many as they can. This phenomenon happens like once in 30-40 years in those lands. The locusts are the only halal bugs that is consumable because they were eaten by the Islamic army during the prophet's conquests. I really hope you would do more research and keep it historical. He didn't surrender even after Ottoman did, in fact Ottoman even threatened him with declaring him as a traitor if he didn't surrender, but still he wouldn't do it. However after Ottoman surrendered there was no supplies coming at all anymore so conditions in Medina worsened severely within few months and he finally surrendered. Brits declared him as a war criminal as he was one of Ottoman Pashas who suppressed Armenian rebellion and their rigged trial in Istanbul even sentenced him to death. But Ankara government wouldn't accept it and forced Brits to release him along with many Ottoman Pashas. He returned to Anatolia and joined Turkish war of independence, fighting in southern front against french forces. After the war he served as Turkey's Kabul ambassador for many years.

We Turks have a belief that when there is a great famine in big wars, when people are about to starve, locusts and people/soldiers survive by eating those locusts. I heard this when I was a child from my grandmother, who saw World War I. In our village and surrounding villages, all the men went to war, the women and children could not harvest enough anyway and the harvest was sent to the fronts and there was not even food or seeds left to plant. While the people in our village were in a situation where they were suffering from hunger, locusts came and people ate the locusts for days and weeks. (This is believed to be a divine thing and is called "famine locust") It is rumored that Fahreddin Pasha also experienced such a situation.

Chronological order isn't correct. After Armistice of Mondrus, the Sultan written an order to surrender the city. Fahrettin pasha didnt follow the order. He defended the Madina 2 month more after the armistice. A morning, his own officers arrested the Fahrettin pasha and surrendered him to Arab rebels. He was sent to a POW camp in Egypt. There are a lot of story during the 2 years 7 months long defend, I have only written shortly.

Turkish nationalism is something that emerged many years after the rebellions of Arabs and others in the first place. The Saudis began to rebel against the Ottoman Empire in the mid-1800s (when oil was discovered in Arab lands and provoked by the west). Turkish nationalism is something that emerged in the early 20th century, after the Balkan rebellions and increasing Arab rebellions in the late 19th century, and after the Russian wars. A group of people pointed to these rebellions and said "we have no friends other than us" and they thought that only nationalism would save the crumbling empire, but this group was in a very minority at that time and nationalism was something that was only viewed with suspicion. The real rise of nationalism in Turkey occurred after the proclamation of the Republic. Because during and just before the First World War, even the nations that the Turks trusted the most stabbed the Turks in the back. People who saw this gradually turned towards nationalism, which emerged in the early 1900s and which they had not respected before. Nationalism was already on the rise almost all over the world. One more thing, I could respect the Arab rebellions if they had not acted together with the British, but this is outright betrayal!

They try to show their innocence by this or by that... but they never understood the meaning of caliphate and concept of universal brotherhood. Young turk, a masonic movement, started long before the arab revolt, perhaps in 1907 and paved the way for turkish nationalism in the caliphate... all the top position bearers in the ottoman caliphate had to be turks and rest of the subjects were second class. To this the arabs stupidly revolted... Turks ditched everyone after ww1 and claimed all the belongings of the caliphate to themselves which had contributions from all of muslim world, With the starting of European romance and the shameless begging of membership of EU.
