North of Silicon Valley, protected by the Point Reyes National Seashore, is the only operational ship-to-shore maritime radio station. Bearing the call sign KPH, the Point Reyes Station is the last of its kind.
KPH is divided between two physical stations: one, knows as the voice, is responsible for transmitting; the other half of the station, known as the ears, was where human operators listened for incoming messages. The voice is located 11 miles north of Point Reyes in the small town of Bolinas, Calif., and the ears reside within the Point Reyes National Seashore boundary nestled in pastures full of cattle and backdropped by the Pacific Ocean.
Stations like this once riddled the California coastline as part of a radio communication network. The operators who ran them were charged with watching over the Pacific Ocean airways, relaying messages to the sailors at sea.

In 1976 when I was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy as a Radioman second class petty officer (submarine qualified) I applied for a job with these folks. It was still a going concern back then. Even though they were still going, I was told that it wouldn't be a good career and that soon the jobs that were there would disappear. Though I had my heart set on pounding brass for a living I had to go elsewhere. I guess I was just too late in the technology passband to be able to do what I loved for a living! I am so glad to see that this site is still being kept as a museum. I lived not far from it in Marin County and would drive out there just to see the building sometimes and think on what could have been. Thank you all for keeping the place open and providing the public with a view of what was. 73! KK0DJ (ex RM2(SS)) SK AR

Old switchboard operators, hat makers, shoe repairers, tv repairmen, ham operators, travel agents, traditional stock brokers, family doctors that make house calls, etc. they are all a dying breed. Happy to see people keeping their passions alive.

All of those tech “advances” have just helped corporations make more money. But society isn’t exactly _improved_ by the elimination of those skills and professions. In fact, I’d argue it’s worse.

a love story indeed, yet a story of love nonetheless. Thank you TechCrunch for documenting this.
