At, 9:06, It's called "Seppuku" (切腹, lit. translate, cutting [the] belly), also called hara-kiri (腹切り, lit. 'abdomen/belly cutting', a native Japanese kun reading), is a form of Japanese ritualistic suicide by disembowelment. It was originally reserved for samurai in their code of honor, but was also practiced by other Japanese people during the Shōwa era. (particularly officers near the end of World War II) to restore honour for themselves or for their families.

I saw this movie six times in theaters before it left The ending scene with the horses during the battle at the very end scene where they're riding the horses across the battlefield the whole entire theaters concrete floor was shaking because of how much bass it was freaking epic❤ it's one of my favorite movies to test on a new stereo system to see if it can handle the sound❤ This movie is a freaking masterpiece ❤ Everything that watch this movie is not expecting it to be that good and they end up crying at the end or at least tearing up or getting emotional it's fun to watch welcome to the club❤

I noticed not many people realize that at 8:39 Katsumoto is seeing his vision he had earlier of the warriors fighting the white tiger... But that white tiger is replaced with Tom Cruise. That is why he wants to keep Tom Cruise alive and brought him to the village... Senpaku is the ritualistic way of unaliving yourself by samurais when they lose battles... General made decisions that costed his men their lives and lose that battle and its a shame on him that he survived while many of his men didn't. So he has to die by senpaku.
@eatsmylifeYT3 ай бұрын
No, it's not. "Senpaku" means "shallow" or "seacraft". The word you're looking for is "seppuku".

"That must be crazy, just observing a battlefield... like it's normal." During the first major battle of the American Civil War(Battle of First Manassass / First Battle of Bull Run), some northern civilians showed up to watch and picnic. They expected the battle to be handily won by the northern forces. When that did not happen, those civilians were just barely ahead of the fleeing northern troops that were retreating.

This will be long but broken up into short segments. "For 6 months work, I am to receive 3 YEARS captain's pay." Let that sink in. Yes, Algren is in pain from his injuries, and going through PTSD. However, he's also going through Alcohol withdraw. Basically detoxing. 13:08 Now Taka understands how her husband died, and everyone else understands why Katsumoto spared his life. 16:00 Remember when Mr. Graham said, "I now, very accurately, translate other people's lies."? This is an example of that.

At 16:00 I didn't realize you commented but its a point I also noticed. Also notice how being unbathed doesn't bother him here and he stops drinking but the minute he gets back to westernized society he says I need a bath, and he starts drinking in his room. Another thing I like is how the movie puts us on pace with captain algren in the beginning, the music, the loudness, and the chaos. But when he sobers up for the first time in who knows how long, its quiet and peaceful. We experience the scene as raw as he was experiencing life. Just a few things I notice in this movie

Japan style, you use a futon, no beds. (Sleep on a futon on the floor). You fold it up and store it in your closet for the day, take it out to sleep. (not a "couch" like how it is used by most people for the word futon today).

@Blaize2425 күн бұрын
Just a comment on the amount of time that Algren was in the village. He was taken in the fall and left in the spring, so I think you've misinterpreted the change in year (which is because he was there over the New Year change) as meaning he was there for well over a year. I would estimate six months, possibly seven depending on when the passes opened.
@nectarpeach28533 ай бұрын
Maybe a weird question, but how did you get the Subtitles right while inverting the movie playback? For example 24:30 Tom Cruise is supposed to be standing on the left, but it's mirrored here, but the subtitles are still correct.

It would take a 1870-80s era steam boat 25-40 days to make the journey from San Francisco - Tokyo. Emperor Meiji (the character that rules Japan) was very young. If you are the eldest son of a Japanese Rmperor, you gain that role as soon as your father dies. The man who gets his head cut off after the first fight committed “Seppuku” or ritual suicide. According to the samurai code, this is done because for samurai, the shame of defeat is supposed to be unbearable.

You commented about how the swords were going right thru people. I thought you might like to know a bit of history about Japan and Katana's. They used to test the sharpness of a katana by how many bodies it could cut thru. They would stack live prisoners that were to be executed like cord wood one an top of another and see how many bodied it would cut thru. It was not uncommon for the Katana to pass clean thru 4 bodies or more. They are one of the greatest swords ever to be designed and crafted. The Samurai believed a living soul inhabited every Katana.
@ERRATAS07083 ай бұрын
Not to mention in the early ages of the Samurai era, the Samurai have the right to test their sword on civilians. So if you walk past them and you don't bow lower enough they have the right to cut you into pieces.

Unfortunately like a lot of history the Samurai have been held up as those who lived with high morals. This wasn't always the case. Many were ruthless. Especially to those who held different religious beliefs. Many Christian missionaries and Japanese people who converted from Buddhism to Christianity were executed by them.

Coward is a strong word, & it’s essential to consider context. Guns: 1) They allow you to engage from a distance. No personal or up close needed. Advantageous. 2) Even a single shot can incapacitate or kill. 3) Easy to learn and use effectively than swords or bows. Swords & bows: 1) It requires more skill, practice & physical fitness. It’s an art form. 2) They’re good for stealth since they’re less attention-grabbing than gunfire. 3) Ofc, they do carry cultural & historical significance. More than just tools but are seen as symbol of honor, courage, & tradition. So if someone chooses gun over a sword or bow. Maybe because they fear direct combat. May been seen as cowardice. But it’s not that simple. In a life or death situations, survival instincts kick in. People WILL choose whatever gives them the best chance of survival. Technology evolves. Swords, etc. were once the pinnacle of technology. Now guns replaced them. It’s not cowardice, it’s about ADAPTATION. It’s not cowardice to use guns - it’s pragmatism. Survival, efficiency & changing tides of warfare all play a role regardless. Let us appreciate the complexity of these choices without labelling anyone a coward. Courage isn’t limited to a specific weapon type you know.
@ERRATAS07083 ай бұрын
We're talking about a movie, about the Samurai in a romanticize way. In that world guns are dishonorable and they'd rather die with their sword charging at the enemy. But in reality the Samurai love guns more than the westerners. They love it so much that they made a lot of variants based on the Portuguese matchlocks.

@@ERRATAS0708 Yes, I'm completely aware of that. I'm just sharing some details on this matter on the side of reality. Do you know how many people nowadays cyberbully celebrities just cuz they play their role a little too perfect that even death threats are a thing. The main point is that it's sad to see people now believing whatever is shown on screen even if it's just a fantasy. Like Game of Thrones, Joffrey being a spoiled brat king. Or Star Wars, the actor who played as kid Anakin and the other who played as Jar Jar got bullied so bad they ended up being depressed. Like "Oh they really are bad". Imagine a US soldier on foreign soil now. "Oh they're invading and ruining other lives" when they themself didn't bother to fact check why US was there in the first place compared to just seeing what's on the news and believing whatever nonsense propaganda that the US just came there to slaughter. Not defending US here, just making an example

I’ve seen helpers/maids who lack common sense, basic math, etc. Even as simple as them doing the laundry & yet somehow got holes, ripped, & burnt parts of my clothes. Like dude, do I need to label every laundry sign indicating how they’re supposed to be cleaned? In this crazy world, anything is possible. There’s a reason why crazies, the worsts, the dumbest, the naive, the uneducated, etc. exist no matter how small or big things are, they’re still here. Britian is the big reason why Japan was able to modernize so quickly. The Brits helped Imperial Japan to do it so that the US, Russia and Germany will not turn Japan into a colony like they did in China and Korea. Good thing is the Imperial Japanese won the civil war too, because if the Shogunate won Japan will struggle to modernize since the Samurai doesn't want their status revoked. And yeah most Asian emperors start running their empire at a very young age.
