He wanted to show they weren't ready yes, but he also wanted to die. His character is extremely tortured by the guilt of what he did.

Tom Cruise is perhaps my favorite actor. He does great in every role. If you want to see an entirely different character for him unlike any other he has done, i recommend "Collateral," starring Tom Cruise and Jamie Fox.

I'm not sure you understand how headphones work. When is in Stereo mode (now is the standard), you get some sounds on the left, some on the right, and some on both. You have to have the headphones in both ears. This movie in particular have an amazing Soundtrack (which I purchased). You are missing a lot of sounds with those little headphones.

The Last Samurai wouldn't be the same without it's beautiful soundtrack. Great reaction, i always had the question why you both didn't react before when we saw Lia and Ellie do it. Please consider reacting to Men of Honor.

20:40 - regarding the comment that Taka and the village members are "kind" to take in Algren. My read on it is a little different. At this point in the movie, it's not "kindness" that informs Taka's actions to care for Algren. In fact she actually loathes him at this point in the movie. We get a glimpse of this when she says to her nephew, Nobutada that he "stinks". We get further confirmation when Taka goes Katsumoto and asks that he send Algren away or that she be allowed to commit ritualistic suicide so she can end the shame of having to care for husband's killer. It's not kindness, rather as Japanese culture (not just Samurai) even today, they often supress their true feelings in subjugation to rules and hierarchy.

I recommend watching the movies with both headphones, because listening to one side is not the same, you lose a lot of the surround sound of the movie, you lose the music, the sound experience is as important as the image. Believe me that listening with both headphones is a completely different experience and they will like the movies more, it is heard the same if the colleague comments something even if they have both headphones on, if it is for that reason that they use only 1 headphone, it is not worth it, miss the complete sound experience, put on both headphones.

So many reactors do that, and for the life me I don't know why. Might as well put a color filter on the video too so the film color is less vibrant.

@@blanketstarry7725 Listening to movies with a single earphone sounds horrible, an essential part of movies is lost, which is surround sound, great specialists work to give us impressive mixes such as Dolby Atmos, DTS sound and these KZbin reactors listen with a single earphone, incredible. They use a single earphone to be able to hear when their friend comments something, it seems absurd to me, even if you have 2 earphones on, you still hear your friend speak, it is not a valid reason to use only 1 earphone and miss out on appreciating the great sound that these have movies, movies will earn much more by listening to them correctly.

The story in broad strokes is very similar to that of Dances with Wolves, Avatar and Pocahontas. It is a story that has been told in several movies, that of the soldier who deserts his own army to join the enemy, because he learns to know him, to love him, to understand him and love his culture and will join them to defend them.
@DrD0000M

Movie is highly innacurate as to history. Samurai DID indeed use guns. The samurai did not wear the traditional armor in these battles as it was useless against bullets. The Emperor's army was not a bunch of inexperienced, incompetent fighters, there were recent prior wars, many of them were veterans of. Tom Cruise's character is based on not an American, but a Frenchman that went there to provide training and actually did become a samurai. Jules Brunet. The samurai fought for their own clans, not the "honor of Japan" or any such nationalist sense. The movie portrays Samurai following European chivalric ideals more often than proper Japanese Bushido. In real life, samurai were extreme elitists, brutally oppressive against peasants, not very nice guys. They also cut off and collected fallen enemies heads after battle.

Hi Viki & Michelle, as for the rain scene where the cpt. Olgren takes a beating from Ujio, he continued to get up despite the beatings, because he wanted the wife (Taka) and son (Higen) of the (red) samurai (Hirotaro) killed by him to be somehow satisfied by seeing him suffer and take punishment, as long as his body held up. It was also a way to make it clear that he was sorry. In fact, after that evening, relations improved, because he demonstrated not only that he had a strong spirit but that he was also sorry for the pain he inflicted.

Such a beautiful movie, but the story about samurai is not accurate, the katana was just a backup weapon, the main weapon was the bow for a samurai and later they used firearm as soon they wear available. But this war did happen, but the samurais are not like that. And there were to many samurais, so some of them were thieves n very poor, it wasn’t like 200 years earlier.

"It's super unrespectable to attack them in the back when they're not expecting it." No, that's the best time to attack. All is fair in love and war. Kill your enemies quickly and quietly when they least expect it. Don't waste your soldier's lives on making a spectacle.

If you want to watch a truly beautiful movie about the collapse of the samurai system watch The Twilight Samurai, which also stars Hiroyuki Sanada and won lots of international awards. I guarantee you guys will love it. By the way, this movie has the running "Bob" joke that appears in Tom Cruise movies. Watch "Oblivion" for more on that! Oblivion is a really good Tom Cruise sci-fi movie too. It has the benefit of having Olga Kurylenko in it. ps the real Last Samurai, Saigo Takamori, was a gigantic ugly guy - who loved large fat geishas (Im not making that up). He was very different to Ken Watanabe. Ken Watanabe does a great job of playing the great Japanese general Tadamichi Kuribayashi in Letters from Iwo Jima, which is also a fantastic movie. Clint Eastwood was given an honorary knighthood by the Japanese emperpor because of that movie. pps if you watch carefully during the fight inside the house you can see one of the "dead" ninjas on the floor roll across the floor out of the way of the remaining people standing. And one of those fuzzy microphone things at the top of the picture. Hilariously bad editing.

"it's not fair." When people are fighting with their lives on the line it is often not fair. If I were fighting for my life, I would want every advantage I could get. Most Americans would. It's why the concepts of samurai and bushido (the code samurai live by) are so foreign to us. The samurai believed dying for your master was a great honor, but our general Patton once said, "No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country." It's not pretty, but it's American to the core.
@Tampahop
@Tampahop Жыл бұрын
@Marcus From Wikipedia: Bushido developed between the 16th and 20th centuries, debated by pundits who believed they were building on a legacy dating back to the 10th century, although the term bushido itself is "rarely attested in pre-modern literature". So yes, the term may be more modern, but not the concept.
