"You have disgraced me!" "If your shame is too unbearable." Offers sword. Such a brilliant moment! Also, The Last Samurai is one of Tom Cruise's best films and the work that Hans Zimmer did on the soundtrack is exquisite. The score that plays over the credits is worth every minute.

I read it as "do not seek for one specific perfect moment, but cherish each moment, every moment is perfect". Much like a more modern line, something like "cannot see the forest for the trees", you keep searching for something so hard that you get blinded and don't see that it's right within reach. That's my interpretation of it, so don't wait, live NOW.

Two things: first, the term scalping does not mean to make someone bald. It means literally cutting off the flap of skin covering the top of the head. It’s pretty brutal. Secondly, the samurai were considered the highest class of society. Also, they trained to protect their lords and their people. You can tell the respect the people have for them when they ride through the town and everybody scurries to the sides of the road and then bow deeply. This was how the samurai class was treated for centuries. With a bit of fear, but also a great deal of respect and awe. When those officers belittled the young samurai and cut off his top knot, they were like people who have just acquired a tiny bit of power and are enjoying lording it over people who used to be their superiors in every way. It would’ve been not long at all before the events of this movie, that the samurai would still have been feared, and also respected, but definitely the most powerful.
@Gavrev

It was I believe also the case that the samurai rarely ever drew their katana, since in proper civilised discourse it's considered a tool of last resort.

Well, at this point in time, merchants had become the most important and samurai were the lowest class, after an entire war to take the samurai's power away, but they still acted like they were the most important people in the country. The samurai literally had the legal right to kill lower classes for perceived disrespect, under the shogunate, so even with the emperor in charge, if people were in the path of a samurai or group of samurai, there was a good chance they'd be killed; even foreign merchants got killed for being in the road. Cutting their topknots off was more like disgracing a deposed dictator. They may have been respected before, but they were brutal and absolutely to be feared

Only just past the 17 minute mark but, 2 things: 1. Those solid wood practice swords (Bokken) were replaced by the four piece bamboo swords (Shinai) because people kept dying or suffering major injury during sparring. 2. The fight between Algren and Ujio in the rain (After fighting the kid Higen) is one of my favorite scenes of this movie. (Also, Ujio (Hiroyuki Sanada) is actually a Master Swordsman).

The film, even if it doesn't seem like it, is based on reality. The film depicts the Satsuma Uprising in 1877 led by Takamori Saigó. The battle at the end of the movie is the "Battle of Shiroyama". Captain Algren is also supposed to represent a real character. He is based on Jules Brunet, a French soldier who was hired to train Japanese soldiers. Brunet eventually fought alongside the Tokugawa Shogun. I also recommend the song Sabaton- Shiroyama.
@VolrinSeth
@VolrinSeth Жыл бұрын
That would make Algren are really loosely based character as there is no shogun at this point.
@Cau_No
@Cau_No Жыл бұрын
@@VolrinSeth The last Tokugawa Shogun was just defeated closely before the events of the movie. Jues Brunet lived at this time, so he definitely was the inspiration for the Algren character. However, he probably didn't ride side by side with the Samurai … There's a Wikipedia entry on him, the Boshin War and the Battle of Hakodate he's connected with.
@VolrinSeth
@VolrinSeth Жыл бұрын
@@Cau_No I know about Brunet. This film is based on the Saigo Takamori/Satsuma rebellion which took place two decades after the Boshin war. Yes, Brunet was still alive, but he wasn't involved in this rebellion. When he was involved the Shogunate and thus the samurai were still very much in power, contrary to this film where the samurai haven't been in power for over 10 - 20 years.

I feel the need to point out that the samurai did use firearms its just that by this battle, they ran put of ammo and gunpowder. Also, in real life the samurai didn't rebel because they felt like the government lacked honor, but more because they went from being the top dogs to making less money then farmers, and were treated ledd then farmers. In other words, they just wanted to be top dogs again and get their rights back
@clonexx

It really boiled down to power. Samurai spent centuries at the top, as the dominant power, and then started losing power to modern progress. They wanted their power back, and that’s mainly what they were fighting for. However, that doesn’t make as dramatic of a movie, so it’s completely understandable why they changed it to be about honor and made the Samurai the “good guys”. The movie is one of my favorites, so I’m by no means shitting on it. There is fantastic acting, cinematography and the score is just perfect. The story makes for the perfect movie.
@VolrinSeth
@VolrinSeth Жыл бұрын
@@clonexx The larger problem with making a historically accurate film about the samurai rebellions is that it would be impossible to paint them in a noble light like this film tries to do. It could have still been very dramatic by refocussing it as the samurai being the bad guys threatening the innocent civilians and threatening progress and peace.

I think on Western mentality is hard to understand Taka's perspective on Cap. Algren. In day-to-day life, when there is no war, killing another person is usually about self-interest and/or hate. In war, it's about who is the enemy and protecting those you fight for. For Samurai, it was about duty and honor, not about hate or enemies, but about doing what was right (at least, that's what their honor code dictated, who knows what went through their heads in actual battle) and a death against a worthy opponent was considered a good death. Taka was raised in that culture and married a samurai, for her, her husband dying a good death must have been painful, but expected and not a reason to hate. And receiving an apology for a warrior who did his job, but was concerned about the damage it caused to her family must have been very unusual and very touching.

Hey Chris. I didn't know that you spoke Japanese. Rewatch the scene when they rescued Katsumoto and the soldier got an arrow through the neck. Loved your Japanese immediately after. I laughed my ass off. time stamp 25:40 through 25:50

Ken and Tom had amazing chemistry, great score, and one of the FEW Hollywood films that did not white wash other cultures to the degree most did and do. Always a favorite of mine nice to see you both appreciate the beauty of learning to see your enemy as a person

What's actually funny is most of this is historically accuratein the early 1890s the Japanese brought tons of people over to basically modernize their country but they also decided to keep some of the traditional values to it as well such as sumo

I believe the first few times where he could have died namely the target practice or when he refused to give his name to his captors were suicide attempts. You are right that he was trying to prove the conscripts weren't ready for a fight but you could see that there was dissappointment in his face that the shot missed. He wanted to end it there. And when he looks at the samurai with the blade to his neck he once again believes this is it but no. He knows that there isnt enough booze to wash away his guilt so he just hopes someone can put him out of his misery.

Let's put ourselves into the shoes of an average japanese peasant. They give us a musket, a uniform and the order to fight. All of a sudden we find ourselves deep in enemy territory, facing the Finest our country has to offer if it comes to warfare. I mean larger than life. Legends. The kind of legend you sit down and admire on long peaceful evenings after your daily work is done. Taken all of this into account it's not that much surprising that they turn tail and run in fear.

This movie covered a lot of themes explored in the 80's mini-series SHōGUN. Notably the 'advanced' west seemingly to also embody a LESS advanced culture. There is minor education of the Japanese language as the episodes (5) progress with the script allowing the viewer to understand basic sentences without the need for subtitle. I was getting drowsy and welcomed the energy this reaction would bring from you both.

Shogun > The Last Samurai A made for TV production from 40-odd years ago still holds up. Toshiro Mifune was born to play Tokugawa/Toranaga. John Rhys-Davies best role. Although people had seen ninja in a modern setting in "You Only Live Twice" this was for many Americans, the first time seeing ninjas in feudal Japan. James Clavell oddly changed names but stuck pretty closely to history. Blackthorne was a real guy, except that his name was Will Adams. Last Samurai OTH is great film-making but a historical mess. The Tom Cruise character is based on a French guy who did side with Samurai rebels but with the faction the Ken Watanabe character *defeated* about a *decade before* the events in the movie. He certainly wasn't at that last stand. And as romantic as the whole "Honoroble warriors w ancient weapons vs soul-less colonists with guns" thing is, samurai had guns imported from Portugal and were crack shots and brilliant fire-arm tacticians since about 1500. Ninjas used guns too when appropriate. They still wore swords but they had rifles on both sides of that last stand. The *gatling guns* were the game changer from the newly industrialized West that the samurai weren't equipped to deal with.

When this first came out, I wasn’t expecting much. I mean…Tom Cruise and Samurai? What? However, I was really pleasantly surprised when the movie turned out to be fantastic. It was well written and acted and featured some amazing actors. It’s a romanticized version of this period though, of course. In reality it wasn’t about honor or anything of that nature for the Samurai, it was about power. They were losing their status as the predominant power of the land and were fighting to cling on to it, including keeping great advancements for the people, at bay. So while the movie depicts the Samurai as the “good guys”, they really weren’t, it all came down to power, as everything always does. That doesn’t take away from the movie in the least though, it’s still a great story and if it stuck to accurate history, Tom Cruise would have been dead on the battlefield in the first battle, end of movie lol Plus, people like a side to root for, so it works much better for the movie than an accurate portrayal would. I just wanted to clarify that I’m not against the romanticized version, because it works so much better as a movie.

aww, you cut it out... blurred between 30:30 and 30:35 is the greatest accidental nut-shot in cinema history. Re-watch when Nathan and Katsumoto return to their troops after the Parley. Aman in the first rank gets kicked in the nuts by Tom's horse and doesn't break character. True professionalism, may any children he had after that hit be proud they came from those balls.

I watched this movies many times, then I watched it with my wife, and her take on the "killing this dude then kiss his wife" part was, she's not in love with the new guy, but remembering her husband, he's just the shape of what she misses, and she projects her love onto him. That turned the whole movie onto its head for me PS : btw I really encourage you to look into Jules Brunet history, he was the the french artillery officer who inspired this story
