CLIP DESCRIPTION:
A disillusioned American military officer (Tom Cruise) learns the Samurai culture while being held captive in a Japanese village.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Edward Zwick returned to the director's chair for the first time since 1998's The Siege with this sweeping period drama set in 19th-century Japan. After centuries of relying on hired samurai for national defense, the Japanese monarchy has decided to do away with the warriors in favor of a more contemporary military. Tom Cruise stars as Nathan Algren, a veteran of the U.S. Civil War who is hired by the Emperor Meiji to train an army capable of wiping out the samurai. But when Algren is captured by the samurai and taught about their history and way of life, he finds himself conflicted over who he should be fighting alongside. Billy Connelly, Tony Goldwyn, and Ken Watanabe co-star.

This is one of the most underrated movies in Hollywood history. A lot of scenes in this film are unique and can't be find in any other film. Hollywood and the Oscar academy tried to ignore this film because of Tom Cruise. They didn't want to show him as a top actor. If Daniel Day-Lewis was acting in this film, the movie have been awarded eight Oscars. But they just humiliated themselves. After many years the film is showing even more how powerful it is made.

One of my favorite movies, not just because of the fights but how he discovers the tranquility of the village, starts learning Japanese, seeing him learning to use a sword like a Samurai and how in the end when he says to the emperor "If you see me as your enemy, command me and I'll gladly take my own life" it might be a bit of a stretch but I believe that IF it came to it he would commit Seppuku as both a way to honor the Samurai but also because at that point he felt connected to them.

@@DustinBarlow8P while in itself it isn't accurate, the movie is literally a description of the downfall of the Samurai culture and the last Shogun. Westerners bring weapons of mass destruction to Japan and some people were not happy with the modernisation, therefore rebelling and eventually getting killed for it.

You should continue to watch some Japanese drama which will definitely make you shed some tears. Look for 'summer snow', GTO - Great Teacher Onizuka (the one which stars Takashi Sorimachi is the better one), 1 Litre of tears, Beautiful life. Those are just a few of my favourites. Might be old, but certainly are better than the 'remakes'.

A big shout out to Mr Tom Cruise for producing such an epic story about "The Last Samurai'. As I am sensei third generation Japanese American, my ancestors on both Grandparents sides come from highly acclaimed line of Samurai warriors! It comes to my attention, my grandfather (ojichan) was 4 years old during this era of this evolution! May I say I am so impressed with your sword demonstration so incredibly brave and you could've been a Samurai Warrior! Thank you again for telling some of Japans Samurai history! This is Tom Cruise's Oscar winning performance only to be snubbed by the idiot Academy.

This movie is so untreated. One of Tom Cruise's best performances. This movie showed me that the guy can act. I don't know why this movie isn't considered one of Tom Cruise's best films.

As mentioned by a few others, this trailer doesn't do the film enough justice. This was by far one of the best movies I have ever seen. Cinematography was captivating and many scenes that didn't even include dialogue still conveyed the message they were trying to display. A great movie on all fronts.

This is one of the greatest films in the 21st century if not one of the greatest in the history of cinema , as time moves on we have to move along with it because nobody posses the power of moving against time , the only difference is who can get to keep his ethics which is truly a battel these days of you think of it
