The last-second Game 5 finish of the 2016 WNBA Finals demands a deep rewind | Lynx-Sparks

The ending of the 2016 WNBA finals raises my heart rate no matter how many times I watch it. Elimination game, no timeouts, tie score, nine seconds left. This is the stuff of driveway fiction, the sort of scenario you create as a kid at your backyard hoop. And like, not to make it all about me, but uh, the fact that back up PG Chelsea Gray has the ball in the final seconds? Um, I was a backup PG! ... this game is like weirdly specific to my personal driveway fiction.
On top of my personal drama, let’s add the context everyone else cares about for this particular moment. If the Minnesota Lynx win, they’ll ascend to dynasty status, matching the legendary Houston Comets with four titles. Sure, they aren’t four in a row like the Comets, but ... I think we can safely say that would still be pretty impressive. And on the other end, the always-coming-up-short LA Sparks are ready to simply stop coming up short and reach their long-predicted potential.
I’d argue even the most imaginative kid on their backyard hoop couldn’t come up with this narrative. Let’s rewind.

As I've read down here, for me this has been more interesting because I didn't really know the outcome, althought I guessed the Sparks took the win. I saw just before the rewind of Candace's Parker first ever dunk for a woman in the NCAA tournament and it makes the story even better. A beautiful story about a player that achieves a lot for her young age and looks that she could even be the WNBA GOAT, then come quite short to those expectations (she is a legend and I'm not an advanced WNBA fan but I don't think she is considered the best ever for anybody i have read) and finally have a redemption.

Effective with the 2016 season, the WNBA implemented changes to playoff seeding and qualification procedures as well as the postseason format. Under the new postseason structure, the eight teams with the highest winning percentages regardless of conference qualify for the playoffs and are seeded based on their record.

So apparently in 2016 and on they changed the format to an 8-seed elimination tournament, where conference doesn't matter. The 5-8 seeds face each other in the first round, then the 3 and 4 seeds face the winners. After this, there is a re-seeding of opponents for the semis when the 1 and 2 seeds enter the mix, and then the finals. These teams were the 1 and 2 seeds that year and beat their semi-finals opponents to get to the finals.
