A look at the challenges for those fighting to save the vital ecosystems of the oceans off Costa Rica.
Rising ocean temperatures have become a worrying trend over the past few decades and pose a threat to sea life. The waters off Costa Rica are host to some of the most diverse corals in the Pacific, and they attract numerous sharks and rays throughout the year. Marine conservation is a priority for this small Central American country. Those trying to protect the oceans, however, are being challenged by a determined fishing industry that wants to exploit this diversity at the expense of disappearing species.
The film The Last Shark is a captivating look at how local marine conservationists are creating initiatives to understand and protect Costa Rica’s vibrant offshore ecosystems.

The video showing the poor shark getting its fins cut whereas it's still alive made me very sad. The images of them laying at the bottom of the ocean, without their fins and motionless were even harder to watch. So much suffering and so much waste!😔

A great report, thank you for producing it! Sharks are essential to the world's oceans and need all the help they can get. Overfishisng is the no.1 threat to our planet after climate change, and it must be stopped!

How brutal and inhumane it is to leave the sharks without their fins to live on the seabed alone!

People say "someone should do something". Everyone is someone. Most people talk, but do less than nothing. They won't even just 'take it easy' on how much fish & meat they eat.

22:09 Yep, there's the crux. As long as decisions are made to get profits to rise in the next quarter, it's awfully difficult to make much headway on longer-term issues (which are most of them).

Unregulated, heavily industrial commercial fishing is what agriculture has become in the United States, a very heavy industrial type of farming with expensive inputs of fertilizer and pesticide making the yield almost commercially unsupportable. If it were NOT for the US dept of agriculture subsidizing industrial farming in America, it would collapse. But the farming industry is slowly reforming, not on the larger corporate level, but on the smaller family owned farms with a system of Regenerative Farming or No Till, No Fertilizer, and NO pesticides and fungicides, which allows the soil to remain fertile and not reduced to dust. The commercial fishing industry needs to be scientifically monitored and regulated, so that it does NOT fish the fishery to collapse. The yields are already declining and so they go farther out. But the answer is less fishing, with less harvesting. Allow some regions of the seabed to be untouched for decades or more to regenerate the corals and the full range of interdependent species again. But greed is the problem. Not saying people can't fish. The Ocean is saying people are killing the fishery and so the Ocean is saying that people can't fish anymore because the fishery has collapsed.

The Saddest 😢The Creator Knows Isaiah Chapter 35 verses 5-7 At that time the eyes of the blind will be opened, And the ears of the deaf will be unstopped. 6 At that time the lame will leap like the deer, And the tongue of the speechless will shout for joy. For waters will burst forth in the wilderness, And streams in the desert plain. The heat-parched ground will become a reedy pool, And the thirsty ground springs of water. In the lairs where jackals rested, There will be green grass and reeds and papyrus.

I'm really not surprised. Seeing the cruelty of Humans upon each other, we have hardly advanced at all from those early ancestors that came down from the trees in the early Savannah of east Africa maybe a million years ago. We have no other explanation except that we are just a bigger and more technologically advanced beast from the 35 kilo variant we use to be. Evolving will not come easy for us. We predicate so much of our survival on competition and accumulation, that we can't see how our survival is actually becoming detrimental to our survival. I suppose with enough climate change and the ensuing disruption of weather, then the growing seasons and the harvests which will bring famine, disease and war due to conflict caused by competition for dwindling resources, we will start to depopulate ourselves through structural struggles and incapacity to cope with the reduced productivity of our world. Then in time if we fall through the two billion human global population, say in 50 years from now at the earliest, but who knows, then we might see our reduced numbers actually be significantly less impactful on the climate and will another generation or two of reduced human waste and abuse and fraud, the world might start to recycle carbon and maybe forests will start to emerge where desolate cities will soon be.

God put sharks in the ocean for a reason. To keep humans at bay.

No. They help keep the ocean balanced and healthy by eating sick/dead fish and keeping the populations of fish on the lower rungs of the food chain in check. This is why God created them with immunity to a lot of things that make us/other animals sick. He also created them with a relatively relaxed nature- shark attacks on humans are much, much rarer than those of other animals, particularly attacks ending in fatality.
