This is definitely not cutting edge. It’s a friction shifter with a ratchet. It’s a step backwards with a quirk. Gevenalle already made drop bar friction shifters.

I am definitely interested in these shifters and I would 100% buy a set as soon as they hit the market even though I don't have an immediate need for them. The existence of these shifters would create an ecosystem in which we could easily experiment with drivetrain components.

In an industry where nothing is compatible, having ONE shifter able to do anything is a breath of fresh air and there is totally a market for this. Getting a nice steel bike with both mullet setup on one set of gravel wheels then swaping the cranks for a 2x for touring... Genius. Get it done!

Great job Sir. I love the direction. I am an avid fan of friction shifting, almost all my 30 bicycles have it. I am also a rabbid fan of Paul Components specifically the thumbies. I am ok being stuck at 10 speeds with the Paul's thumbies but I kinda wish there was more compatibility between things. So compatibility is my two cents. Great job on the channel, I love almost everything you guys put out, Cheers! - M

I've run a friction bar end once as an experiment on your channel's suggestion and LOVED it. I was deeply disturbed, as an index fundanmentalist, and now feel inexorably drawn to throwing Campagnolo wheels into my Shimano roadie set up. I can currently bodge left hand ( friction ) spare shifters into my 1X drivetrains but a Soma 12 ( and maybe 13? ) future-friendly bar end would be a VERY DESIREABLE THING.

This is awesome Russ : having this kind of ideas, showing people there are other ways around this compatibility mess and now this... If it happens it would go beyond just making videos and would be incredible! I don't know if I would be confortable with a bar-end shifter though 🤔 maybe I should look for a cheap but not too crappy one to try it out with my 9-speed sora commuter.

The easiest hack is to file the shifter pod as you mentioned, done many times successfully. Only issue I have with it is that the shifter ends up pointing nearly vertical reaching the lowest/biggest gear. It's nice to see that this UNO shifter is still pointing out flat in the lowest/biggest gear.

This is awesome, 12 speed 1x mountain range on a drop bar is something we DESPERATELY need. This would even allow a 2x12 setup to get a super low range, or not have to use a crazy 50T rear, or just get better gear ratios throughout the range. I'm about to ditch my BMC and get a steel frame to start the chaos.

Bonkies, Russ! Your collab with a manufacturer to make production possible is a breakthrough! Just to mention it, another benefit of a larger shift pulley will be to lessen cable breakage at the shifter due to all previous shifters having too tight a flex radius for the cable diameter. Thank you for your representation of an underserved market segment you are helping to define.

I’ve been on friction for a couple of weeks now and it’s been great. I’m running an Uno with a 1x Deore setup. It took me a little while to get used to it. It’s super easy to shift to a smaller cog but it took me a while to learn to do decent shifts to a larger cog. Makes sense because the derailleur is always pulling toward smaller cogs. I finally figured out that, if I’m shifting to a larger cog, I need to give the shifter a very slight bump after I feel the chain shift to the next cog. It’s become second nature and it’s working great.

Just in time?!My wife and I we’re talking last night about preferring friction. We’ve been running Sram road shifters(1x) the last couple years and while the benefits are fantastic for us. Less exposed cable/housing(always traveling) and being able to safely shift in an intersection at the bottom of a hill in the rain with traffic for example(again always traveling, new places unexpected weather, detours etc.). We’ve never adapted to the plastic click feel and never attained the enjoyable intuitive visceral experience we get from friction. I will say our current road brake shifters have preformed flawlessly and the overall tidiness is appreciated. But it never feels quite right. Also Loves the Wild Bikes interview!!!

Been using a Wolf Tooth 11speed Tan Pan on a 3x9 speed cassette for a few years now with great success with both Shimano and then Rivendell Silver Shifters on three different drop bars bikes because like your experience the shifters would only pull like 7 gears. I am a huge fan of all friction shifting. I especially appreciate that you can trim the front derailleur to suit for no chain rub and once both derailleurs are set and adjusted you can just forget about it. As you have said friction shifters are extremely easy to get used to and beats messing with index shifting by a mile. But the Tan Pan is a pain in the butt to set up when you recable and I would love to lose it and simplify. Bring on the new shifter.

I'm not going to lie I find the return of friction shifting as an option to be kind of heartening. Indexing is cool and all - I've got trigger shifters on a trek mountain bike I've rebuilt, but 8-speed shifters with a 7-speed cassette just looks wonky even if it works, but I like the low maintenance worry-free nature of the thumb shifters on my other bike.
