The Black Watch was so badass that the only way the writers could make the coup work was to pretend a nuke could be smuggled basically into their base. Which, of course, is total nonsense. “Hey, captain, the seismic sensors detected excavation activities near our base. Someone’s digging a tunnel under us!” “Ignore it, otherwise the writers will fail.” And the writers still almost lost against their own dudes.

To be fair, the nuke was delivered by people that had been working alongside the Black Watch for years at that point. Also, it wasn't detonated underground; it was either airdropped, or detonated inside the base, but not underneath. Otherwise the command bunker that Colleen Schmidt and Elizabeth Hazen were in would've been vaporized.

You dont have to be 'in base' for it to do damage...but somewhere where shipping and receiving could be done with a bunch of factory workers getting 'paid off' to go home early would be the best spot to fashion a nuke for detonation.

Both the original Amaris Coup section in the Star League sourcebook and Operation APOTHEOSIS section in Liberation of Terra mention that the nukes used by Amaris' forced were delivered by aerospace fighters. Notably, while the 50 kiloton Santa Ana nukes used did kill all the mobilising Blackwatch on the surface, Fort Cameron's underground infrastructure and hardened 30 storey HQ building survived and used the time the Blackwatch bought to clear launch tubes and mobilise fighters and mechs into the city, letting the SLDF continue to contest Unity city for a full day, with a third nuke being dropped on Fort Cameron and an hour of orbital bombardmen being done before the base finally fell silent... And yet past that the ghosts of the blackwatch persisted.

If I had to compare these guys to a guardsmen regiment I’d probably compare them to the Armageddon Steel Legion. Edit: or The Cadians. Both have fought against insurmountable odds and have either won or losed. The Steel Legion fight using tanks, artillery, cavalry, etc do to their hive world being an industrial powerhouse. They’ve fought against billions of Orks and Daemons and have won. The Cadians have the same morale possibly greater then Blackwatch. Their home planet Cadia was destroyed before their morale was even shaken.

I've usually held that BattleTech, especially the SLDF, have higher individual quality when compared to their WH40k equivalents (Mechs to Knights, Warships to Imperium Navy, etc), but the Imperium has an insurmountable advantage in numbers.

The only way you are stopping an invasion when the Marines show up is you hit them with EVERYTHING, and, even then, the titanhammers, terminators armed with thunderhammers and shields will cqc your mechs into scrap.

@@ladywaffle2210 songs are rhymes and poems. The lyrics for this song aren’t. It has no chorus which while not bad by it’s self just adds to the overall problem. I don’t enjoy the singer in this one. Not enough bagpipes (pipe organ was nice but… well… highland sights come on man! It’s feels more like a cut down explanation of the fall of house Cameron and the Black watch someone tried to sing than an actual song.
