Absolutely brilliant. Thank you for creating and sharing this slice of Cornish history. A thoroughly enjoyable watch with its wistful take on a past era. Loved the line "there were no lotteries then - people worked to get money!!"

Next stop Chils worthy! What IS that fabulously haunting music that immediately follows this statement. This for me makes this film truly memorable.❤

In the 1960s we went from Kent all the way to Newton Poppleford in Devon to stay for a glorious fortnight in a "Camping Coach", berthed on a siding. From Kent to London we went on an emu (electrical multiple unit), for the uninitiated. But from Paddington, where we were greeted with an enormous noisy steaming monster of an engine to take us to Exeter, then a tank engine to take us down the branch line. It went from double track to single line working (with a token) from Newton Poppleford to Sidmouth. Fantastic journey, i can clearly remember we had a meal on the train and the waiter came to our table with six bowls of soup, but as he went to put the last two down we went over some catch-points and he spilt the lot. Didn't take long to replace the soiled table cloth and new soup came. Those branch lines were sorely missed after Beeching closed thousands of railway lines and stations, (2,363 stations).

Really enjoyed the video and its relaxed nostalgia. Thank goodness there are still people who care about preserving memories of this bygone age. Thank you.

I knew dear ol Arthur Westington thro another dear ol mate Roy Wilce. Use to meet up at the BRSA club at Laira with the ol footplatemen,(green & brown badgers). I was busy with restoring 34007 @ Bodmin. Arthur worked with my uncle Harold Wright at Friary & Laira & knew my grandad George Wright (shunter) at Friary & Bere Alston. Arthur was good for a laugh & told of the struggle of getting the 0-6-2T’s up the bank from Calstock steam knocked back & water in bottom nut. They loved the ol Bulleids & yes even the western men quietly admired them too. Got quite a few good memories of the time I spent with the ol boys. Lovely vid thank you. Remember Bere Alston well from the 60’s.🙂

What a treat this film is, so important to have such evidence of times gone by. The Narrators gentle west country accent is lovely and compared to my North Kent twang so special too. Thank you Thank you for sharing everything.

Delightful to see this, but I must try to make some corrections. This uses a previous film, with the same title, but if you look at the sunshine and the vegetation you will see that this cannot be the last train in November as claimed. The footage was in fact shot by the Callington Grammar School Film Society in the summer of 1966, under the guidance and inspiration of our teacher, Sarah Poyntz, who appears sitting in a carriage towards the end. I recognise Susan Wonnacott, but no one else at this distance in time. I’m the tall chap with heavy-framed glasses. Offered in the spirit of historical accuracy.

Thank you for the correction. As I remember, the footage was a mixture from different people. It was dad that found the footage (who has sadly passed away). I know he did his best with the information he had, but happy to be corrected. :)

Who’s that handsome guard changing the points at 8.43? I had hair in those days 😁. I’m sure on the original video I featured right at the end changing the points at Bere Alston in my shirt sleeves and braces. My boss pulled me up for not wearing an HV vest.

Too late to correct the narrator, I know, but at 41:50 he talks about Adams 02 Class 0-0-4 Tanks. Now that would be a very odd loco. Nevertheless, a very interesting video.

Hold on. The censors certificate at the beginning says 1946. What? Obviously this doesn't take anything from the enjoyment of this film. Just a tad confusing!

That's a little in joke. Dad and I always used to put a certificate on the front of our movies, for fun. The date on it is actually dad's birthday.

Specially if your name was Ernie Marples ! No Tax for thirty years also ! When they come looking for it,do a runner overnight; Jolly nice of the taxpayer to buy you a Chateux in France. Blame it all on Richard Beeching, thats why you appointed him,

They talk about beeching cuts as good for the country, in fact in most cases it was the opposite with the destruction of livelihoods and communities over night, but the government conveniently overlooked that in favour of saving money, false economy really .
