Fun fact: When Hayao Miyazaki was starting his own animation studio, he wasn't sure where he would get the staff necessary to run it. He was still very early in development, and he saw this movie, loved it, and discovered that it was going to be Rankin Bass's last movie because ITN was going bankrupt. Rankin Bass's animation offices were about to be out of a job so Miyazaki commissioned the entire staff to make Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind, and that became the first Studio Ghibli film; Nausicaa was in theaters before Miyazaki had incorporated, or even named the studio. The Last Unicorn is the mother of Studio Ghibli.

Rankin/Bass has a LOTR series following, but fittingly..., as it's Christmas Eve, plenty know them from the series of Christmas movies and other things they put out. It's like Hanna-Barbera. Some get it, some don't. I love Miyazaki, but I'm not sure it would be insulting to align him with others rather than have others be compared to him...

And the tapestry was a Christian one, where the unicorn(s) symbolized Christ. Early and medieval Christians regularly saw the unicorn as a picture of Christ. Songwriter Jimmy Webb apparently picked up on this association in the lyrics for this movie's songs. The last verse of the title song uses imagery that agrees with Christian imagery for Christ's second coming. ""Walking Man's Road" evokes Christ's incarnation with imagery similar to that in the gospels.
@Nikybeez10 ай бұрын
@@cw9817 Like so many theists, Christians tend to take symbols that predate their religion and apply it to their chosen beliefs (unicorns... walking...). This is simply a matter of opinion. Some would say those tapestries were often hung in bedrooms to celebrate marriages to virgins. And some connect the two. Still, it's only personal interpretations about fiction. Is that your take or the songwriter's words from an interview? If it's his take, I'd like to read the article. I haven't heard anything about anyone working on that movie, taking the symbolism and making it about their religion.

I never saw this movie as a kid, but it was one of my wife's favorites as a little girl. I've watched it a few times and can see why. It's one of the most visually stunning animated movies out there, especially considering the era it was made in, where cheap animation reigned supreme. Literally every scene in this movie is a work of art, from beginning to end - some of the most detailed scenery I've ever seen in an animated movie, right up there with Miyazaki, etc.. Particularly the side-scrolling scenes, where the animators used multiple layers of forest, vegetation, etc. panning at different speeds. I thought the sound track by America was goofy the first time I saw it, but it really does fit the movie well, and their music is very well composed. Wish I could've seen it when I was young, but at least our kids will get to enjoy it.

This honestly has to be one of the best openings to an animated film, or any, ever made. This score is amazing. And I honestly don't why America doesn't have the theme song on one of their Greatest Hits compilations.

Honestly, I would love to see a movie like this animated nowadays. It has its strengths and weaknesses, but it’s a very somber movie that strikes a chord with you.

Agreed And this theme by America has now become one of my favorite soundtrack songs alongside many others. I think it’s even on one of their Greatest Hits albums. It’s not the first soundtrack song I’ve seen on a Greatest Hits album either which makes sense because they tend to stand out

I’m happy they got what a unicorn should look like:- an animal the size of a large deer, long flowing mane, slender legs, cloven hooves and a lion’s tail.

I totally agree with you on that! Sign me up too.... Lol. By the way everyone, I own this movie on Blu-ray&it's gorgeous and the story of the young girl that created the artwork in response to the poem, which she sent to the author, is fascinating. This lead to the concept for the movie. America is the band

blueclovergirl I am, i'm a straight guy who dug this movie for 29 years since i was 4. Good storytelling, nice cast, darkness, a badass monster and not to mention Lady Amalthea who definitely can stun any masculine fellow who watches this movie as she is on par with the likes of Black Cat when it comes to chicks with white hair. And ever heard of bronies?

An intresting fact about this story, Peter S Beagle got the idea from a tapestry he saw where it had bulls and unicorns fighting each other and he made up a wizard called Smendrick which he used to tell his children as a bedtime story, I would really love to see a film about him and his adventures.

Everything in that drawing is adorable. From the soundtrack to the characters. You identify with the characters' emotions. One of my favorite drawings. I can see it always and always. I would like Lean and Amalthea to have his happy end. I feel always nostalgic and melancholic when I see it The Last Unicorn, but in a positive way.

I have this on dvd and want to show it to my niece. I hope she likes it and doesn't get bored. I saw this when I was her age and loved it. Lately kids have been trained by many media outlets to not think to hard about a plot or have patience. Almost everything seems to be a string of flashy sound bites and advertising.

This is a great movie, with songs I love. It was over a decade before I could even listen to this song without crying. I'm old enough to have seen it in the theater, and I'll always be glad my mom took me to see it. FYI for those getting a copy of the movie, try to get the old VHS if you can. The 25th anniversary release is slightly censored, for the worse IMO.

The Last Unicorn is a fantasy feature-length animation that studies the essence of mortality. Adapted from Peter S. Beagle's 1968 novel of the same name, it was produced by Rankin and Bass Production in 1982 and animated by Topcraft, the Japanese studio that would later splinter to become Studio Ghibli.

The Animation is incredible, it really reminds me growing up on the old Disney films and a few other underrated animation films. I liked the story, it was an interesting exploration of fulfillment and the joys and pains of finding it. I plan on checking out the book when ever i got time. i love her name, Amalthea. Not only is she the only Unicorn with a name, Amalthea but a Unicorn who knows what love and regret is. A Beautiful and Underrated film 🦄💖
