Hey guys whats happening? Niyat here with film comics explained. As requested, today we’ll be exploring 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter’.
If you’re not familiar with Bram Stoker’s 'Dracula', check out my video on the novel and Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 adaptation starring Gary Oldman, links in the description.
With that said, the novel is essentially considered the quintessential Dracula story, highlighting his voyage from Transylvania to London, his sensual seduction of maidens, his powers, his vicious attacks on the innocent, his attempt to expand his feeding grounds and the great hunt by Van Helsing.
Directed by André Øvredal (who helmed the 'Trollhunter' and 'The Autopsy of Jane Doe '), the 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter takes a few pages from Stoker’s magnum opus, tweaking and turning the events of that short chapter into a feature length film.
Given what happens in the novel, we can see where this is heading. The title itself, gives you a not-so-subtle hint. Starring Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, the ever-commanding Liam Cunningham, and that chameleon David Dastmalchian, this film doesn’t hold back on showcasing how merciless Dracula can be when he is hungry.

I actually really liked this movie. It feels so different from not only other claustrophobic monster movies, but other Dracula adaptations. I love the cast. I LOVE this intelligent predator version of Dracula. My favorite moments are whenever he speaks, as well as the ending where he teases Clemons for his failures to kill him

Can we all agree that the scene when dracula is holding clemens from the neck and clemens says “i am not afraid of you” and dracula responds with “you will be” was probably one of the best scenes in the movie especially since you barely hear dracula talk at all so whenever he does its super creepy and gives you goosebumps, regardless this movie was honestly really good and i hope people dont sleep on it.

@scrooge1913 Considering the fact it was his first line he delivered that wasn't mimicking someone else. I found it fitting. He's been f'ing with everyone up until this point. This movie frustrated me so much, they found his box after searching to see where he sleeps and didn't throw it off the boat immediately upon finding it, and they didn't explain what could be in the other boxes 38 boxes aside from dirt. Like am I missing something?
@donovanbradford8231
@donovanbradford8231 8 ай бұрын
I do agree there was a plot hole there. As far as not throwing everything overboard that doesn't occur in the box which is still the source material. But I would assume by that point in the story there may not have been enough time to get everything off the boat before nightfall or not enough people. Or there still might have been the thought in their heads if we get rid of the cargo there goes our bonus not realizing your bonus is paid by the cery monster they hunt. Given the ending of the film they did seem to be setting this up for future films with the lead tracking Dracula down in England, but unless physical media and stream sales explode there is no chance that happens.

Yeah that’s the exact same feeling I got. The doctor was talking about hunting Dracula down and then all of a sudden you hear the cain. To me, that implied that Dracula had actually been “hunting” him this whole time. And I put it in quotes bc he wasn’t hunting with the intent to kill. More like stalking to learn as much as possible and now he’s ready to play.

I hope you know that technically this is a prequel? "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" was a chapter in Bram Stoker's "Dracula" book. The movie that came out in the 90s is the same book. So it probably won't be a "sequel." The story was already told with Gary Oldman, Anthony Hopkins, Winona Ryder, and Keanu Reeves in that movie.

Shoutout to the romanian who saw the warning sign and gtfo out there, I know it's against the lore as Dracula I recall had gypsy servants but given their attitude in this one, where they (the gypsies) wanted to be gone before sundown I picture they somehow instead of trying to kill Dracula, just caught him during his daylight rest, and put him on any ship going to a nation across the ocean to be rid of him.

I actually loved this movie, but knowing I've not read the novel probably makes it easier for me to enjoy it. At its best: it shows just how much of a powerful demon Dracula really. His few lines work, especially "you will be" in response to Clemens defiantly saying he refused to fear the vampire (if I recall it right). It also dips well into how a crew could work. At its worst: I now know for certain it deviates a bit too hard and the pacing could have used work. I would give it high marks in the end. It's good.

I genuinely don’t understand the reason people disliked this movie. Yes, it shifts the narrative, but it’s still the last voyage. Also, can we talk about how the soundtrack cinched the feeling of dread? Bear McCreary keeps making amazing tracks, and he certainly didn’t fail in this.
@donovanbradford8231

Part of me thinks the reason many disliked the film was either thry weren't familiar with the book as questions like, why not get rid of the boxes once they discovered he was in them, forgetting that never happened in the source material. Or possibly because it's not a faithful Dracula story it could have upset purist fans of the character. Myself I enjoyed as a solid monster movie for sure, but did see a flaw in that this Dracula is a monster vs say the book Dracula is not only an evil monster but a very cunning tactician bringing so many boxes to scatter over London so he could freely hunt prey without fear if discovery or getting caught in sunlight. This Dracula didn't seem capable of that type of thought to me that is.

I very much agree with your point and enjoyed the film myself. However I don't see a sequel in the future because what I heard the film's international distributor was bought out by someone and the film only had a U.S. release as several people I know in England stilll have not seen it and really want to. So with only domestic sales I don't see the film making enough money to get a sequel. The only chance would be if streaming and physical media sales go through the roof and the studio does turn a profit. Which is disappointing because I would have enjoyed to see to where a sequel would have gone either in an original direction or in a Sherlock Holmes meets Dracula where characters of the book are replaced or changed to be Holmes and Watson.

I saw this movie now for myself and was pleasantly surprised. It's a very fun monster horror flick. It could have relied a little bit less on jumpscares, but it's at least very well shot, composed and atmospheric. A really fresh take on Dracula that took the Captains Log from the novel and made its own isolated story out of it. For me it's a solid 7/10 movie. Not the once in a lifetime Dracula movie (like Nosferatu, Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee or the Coppola version) but easily in the upper tier of Dracula adaptations.

I like the comparision of the slow burn of the Alien movie, I like the actors and actress. And I like the evolution of Dracula here. He had to regress himself to his primal form for the journey? I quite enjoyed it. The scene with Dracula getting the boy was creepy. There were flaws, but it was athmospheric and the creature was well done. I rather have a problem with the initial concept. It is not like they are travelling from New York to London. Varna to London means there are so many ports where they could escape. They could also simply set fire to the ship at sunrise and sail away with the rescue boat to safety. He can't escape in the sun so he either drowns or burns. The end. But given the restrictions of the source material it was quite well done.
@eloigillarty3285
@eloigillarty3285 8 ай бұрын
Well, the movie justifies the reason why they did not decide to stop at any of the ports. There were no signs that the ship was set on fire when it was found in the novel, the movie also justifies why they were initially against the idea of destroying the ship. Given the fact that there was also a storm, I am not sure that your flaws have a proper foundation.

@@eloigillarty3285 I had the impression that they said there is no other port along the way or I may have misheard. And I perfectly understand why at least the captain would be against leaving and scuttling the ship. But the second it became clear what they were dealing it becomes a simple and foolproof solution. But yeah I get it, then the story ends. Still quite well made film. I would be curious to see how Clemmens meets Van Helsing while chasing Dracula in London. If they ever made a sequel he could join the posse from the original storyline. It was a nice touch that he didn't believe in the supernatural at first, being a man of science.

What i loved about this movie was how logical everyone behaved. No cheap bad decisions to push the horror. Problem with the crew's logic was that they didnt know shit about a vanpire. Great example was when they placed snipers in the crow's nest without knowing Dracula could fly. Also, the slow realization the crew had that they NEVER had a chance at all and were only alive because Dracula was rationing his food supply was great. Even when the guy survived at the end, he learns Dracula left him alive just to torment him longer.

I just finished the movie and it was pretty mid for me, they had great ideas for what could have easily happened in the book, but there's some things that just pulled me out of the film. I won't ruin the end, but it was very inconsistent for dramatic effect at the last encounter with the count on the Demeter, but it was the introduction of two of the new characters (for checks most likely) that really pulled me out. Not that they didn't do fine acting, but story wise it turned a movie that could have been a vampire version of alien into your typical vow of revenge ending that if you've even vicariously read or even heard the original story, knows the character that makes it doesn't do anything in the end because of the original book. I understand that changes should be made to at least attempt to stir things up a bit, but it really could have been better than what they made, I even like the more simplistic depiction of dracula than something that they could have easily done, but being a history enthusiast they came very close to jumping the shark. Not bad, but could have been great.

While I liked the film myself and would be curious about how a sequel would follow Clemson and the story further. I don't see a sequel happening unless the streaming and physical media sales for this film explode, because the international distribution company for this film was bought out and so the film had no international distribution as I now several people in England very sad they couldn't see this film. So given the budget with only a U.S. release I doubt it made enough money to warrant a sequel.

I think the movie was okay and contrary to what might have been planned and what is said here, having seen Dracula, I don't feel another movie in between is necessary. I think Dr. Clemens stupidly fell into the trap by following Dracula outside at night while he knew damn well how to kill him during the day. Hence, I think the dear doctor dies even before the ending credits finish rolling.

I felt as if they held back when it came to that. @@StephenBrown-xf7ddconsidering Dracula is an incredibly intelligent and long lived creature, and needs to safely make it across the ocean, it would make sense he’d play it smart until the tail end of the journey. I believe in the books it’s explained they caught on, but by then it was too late. Dracula would probably only be savage towards the end, especially if he doesn’t want people seeing that cargo and getting too suspicious of the fact that it’s the only thing that survived the voyage. Back then, superstition was absolutely a living, viable thing and they’d probably think something cursed happened on the ship. Dracula seemed to play it smart, which… that’s what I’d expect. In fact, I’m surprised he wasn’t smarter in this.

Fits the lore better, no contrived plot convenience, adds to the hopeless tone, all in all a better ending

My opinion is they actually thought this was going to be popular enough to afford a sequel or “cinematic universe” to build on hence they went off of the source material and tried to set up the one guy to be the nemesis of Dracula. It failed and now instead of making a decent tie in movie to a beloved classic novel we get an ok vampire horror movie that ends with a lame sequel bait to a series that will never be. Sucks because I was originally really excited for this until I heard about the last half of the movie just breaking away from source material so badly

Myself I do agree there were several changes done for a couple of reasons. Some were done to really build out the story of the voyage for a feature length film. Others were done more so because of the mindset of Hollywood today particularly the addition of Clemson and Anna and those two characters while played well were done to check very specific boxes of film today. I would have been interested to see how a sequel would have played because I do think Clemson would have taken the part of one of the other characters from Stoker's novel, as I've read Sherlock Holmes meets Dracula and in that parts are change to insert Holmes primarily for the part of Van Helsing and Watson for several parts if Johnathan. So curious what this film would have done for a sequel.

Would it have been too much to ask, to just have Liam Cunningham be the Lead as the Captain? I had some hope when I learned of that casting choice but they did everything in their power to replace him with another set of generic young protagonists no one cares about. The Movie could have been a shorter, more consistent experience that doesn’t rely on so much dull hollywood spectacle. Which would have been refreshing among all the vanity projects competing over who can have the most unnecessarily bloated runtime. I'm not asking for a damn arthouse movie, just something that isn't so painfully conventional.

I've never read the original Dracula, but after seeing this movie I should definitely look into it. Personally, I loved the film. Did it have problems? Of course it did: It didn't need to be two hours long, some of the more depressing moments dragged on, Dracula didn't have a whole lot of personality, and that tacked on, sequel-bait ending was really unneeded. Still, I had a great time with the film. They did a fantastic job re-capturing the atmosphere and feelings of isolation, dread and horror from Alien, to the point where I had trouble sleeping the night after I watched the film. The characters were likable despite not having a whole lot to them, Bear McCreary's score, while not his best, is still great to listen to, and then there's Dracula himself. Despite his lacking personality, I loved this Jeepers Creepers-esque take on the character. Compared to the many, *many* incarnations of Dracula in the past (let's see: a tragic sexyman figure, a straight up over-the-top monster, an entity with nearly enough power and presence to rival a Lovecraftian Old One, Bela Lugosi and his immitaters, etc, to everything in-between), this honestly felt like a fresh take on him. On that note, while I dislike the sequel-bait ending, there were elements about it that I liked, like the idea of Clemens becoming a Van Helsing-type character, and Dracula's 'human' disguise being a nod to Count Orlok from Nosferatu (which also, again, gave me severe Jeepers Creepers vibes. As in they could pass for creepy old humans from afar, but up close, that's when you know something is very wrong and you wanna run for it). Overall, is it my favorite horror-monster film of the year? Probably not, Evil Dead: Rise is more enjoyable for me, but I think its a great and well-made film that I hope will become a cult classic in the future.
