A chronicle of the second late night war of words between between two multi-millionaires, Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien, for control of The Tonight Show; no matter the outcome, they will both come out of the war with their millions intact and both in control of some late night talk show or other.

Conan lost the #1 spot by the 2nd week. He did a bad show that even his hard-core followers didn’t like and refused to make any adjustments. He’s not even a good fit for it. He should have gone to Fox but he naively still thought of the Tonight Show as an ‘institution’ and ‘sacred ground’ rather than just another show at 11:30pm. He brought it on himself.

Conan wasn't a good fit for late night television in all honesty, though if we're being honest, late night tv is out moded, out dated and for old people. Conan is far bigger than late night tv, he's far more relevant than Leno, Kimmel or any other current late night hosts out there so he ended up better off for what happened.

A couple years ago I would have disagreed with that statement, but lately I've realized that Jimmy Fallon just doesn't have the longevity/endurance like some of the other hosts. As a person, Fallon is a nice guy but the Tonight Show has become extremely stale recently and it's painful to watch anymore, especially his interviews which feel incredibly artificial and filled with unnecessary fluff to fill in the time.

Jay handed off "The Tonight Show" at #1, and with Conan as host, the show was losing to *CBS* within a week. This trend continued for months before Jay's 10pm show premiered, so Conan proved he could fail all on his own. Conan fought *NBC* over nearly everything they suggested to improve the ratings, and in the end- even though they wanted him to stay- Conan chose to resign and take the buy out money. The only reason Jay had to give up "The Tonight Show" in the first place was because Conan greenlit *NBC's* proposal to forcibly retire Jay. But if 5 years earlier Conan had instead said no and later accepted the offer from *ABC* or *FOX,* he would've had his own show with an earlier start time, Jay and his staff could've remained at "TTS," and the entire debacle would've been averted.

Conan's TBS show took over the time slot that "Lopez Tonight" had previously filled, hence why it was necessary for George to state that he was fine with being moved to a later slot. As you recall, this was what Jay's proposed 30 minute show would've done to Conan's "Tonight Show." But, with "Conan" as his lead in, "Lopez Tonight" was eventually cancelled, and when he later did Howard Stern's show, Lopez revealed that TBS got him to say that he was okay with being bumped. Lopez also mentioned that the ratings for "Lopez Tonight" in that earlier time slot had actually been better than Conan's when he took it over.

Patience is a virtue and one that greedy money men don't have so ironically they lose out on money they could've had if theyd had some fucking patience about letting the new host develop a following, they expect over night ratings success and nothing on TV that has ever mattered long term has ever started off as an instant hit, you need to allow time for people to find it and catch on.

Yes, but he and Jay have patched things up since then. Thank goodness, too, because, at the time, if he'd known the whole story he would've realized Jay's "promise" to Conan was actually a display of grace in defeat. Conan's deal with *NBC* didn't require Jay's agreement, so Jay only knew about it after it had been made. There's no way he could've known at the time that *NBC* would years later be begging him to stay. Conan is actually the one who should've been 'splainin' his actions to Kimmel.

It's an illustration of what went down and what the public witnessed, it's very well done and it's obvious the executives did some shady shit plus Leno had no integrity and was cynical as Conan stated. Where is the other side of the story? I don't hate Leno and as a matter of fact I enjoy watching Jay Leno's Garage and his love of Automobiles.
