These Firefly guitars are perplexing to me. I’ve always prized value in a guitar, which is why my current electric guitars are all Epiphones and MIM Fenders. I’ve entertained the notion of fulfilling my nearly half-century-old dream of buying a Gibson Les Paul Classic or Standard, but I don’t know if I could pull the trigger on a $2,300-$2,600 guitar for which I have no real need. The fact that there are even greater values out there now, like Firefly, makes a genuine Gibson seem even more frivolous.
@markcampbell75542 жыл бұрын
There's a lot of great value in the Epiphone line. I would love to own a Gibson Les Paul again someday but like you, paying several thousand dollar's for one makes me take a longer look at model's like the Epiphone Prophecy Les Paul's and actually the whole series. For $800 you get a guitar with good fishman pickups and locking tuners and many useful features. There's actually a lot of great instruments out there that are reasonable. Too bad Gibson's usually are not! LOL

Wow! I think you’re the first one on KZbin to do a proper review of this new Firefly FFJA model! An EXCELLENT review too, if I may say so! Just a couple of clarifications and corrections for everyone here, because this is an error I see coming up a LOT, both in reviews and in comments: Jazzmaster pickups are *NOT* the same as P90’s, nor are they the same as Jaguar pickups. Yes, JM and P90 pickups do bear some visual resemblance, but there are 2 key differences between JM pickups and P90’s: 1) JM pickups are even fatter and shorter than P90’s, so they have a slightly wider magnetic field aperture than P90’s, giving them even more potential bass response. 2) The pole pieces on JM pickups ARE themselves the magnets, unlike P90’s, which use a bar magnet on bottom. This results in greater treble response, making JM pickups much brighter and some would say more “Hi-Fi” sounding than P90’s. Jaguar pickups are also completely different, being more like Stratocaster pickups than anything else. The FFJA looks to have REAL JM-style pickups instead of the P90-style pickups used on other JM clones like those from IYV or Monoprice. The pickups on the Firefly FFJA deserve to be evaluated in this context. How they compare to other JM clones with real JM-style pickups is also a valid question.

Why are you are calling them "hybrids"? Do you mean because they are JM copies? A Squier Affinity JM has ceramic P-90s pickups, a different construction. The Squier Classic Vibe JM has alnico Jazzmaster-type pickups. So I'm confused; on one hand you say these pickups are similar in construction to the Affinity JM's pickups ... which are ceramic P-90s ... but then you say they are not P-90s. In another post you say they have bar magnets on each side of the pole pieces. But isn't that how a Jazzmaster-type pickup is made, using rod magnets?
@gregsguitartone2 жыл бұрын

@NeoRichardBlake2 жыл бұрын
@@louisfryzel4618 P90 and JM pickups are different sizes and use different magnetizing methods. These and Affinity JM use the JM size and winding, but are magnetized in a P90 style. A traditional JM pickup uses alnico magnets as the pole pieces directly, similarly to how a Strat does. P90s use a non magnetized pole piece to hold the bobbins together, which are then magnetized by connecting bar magnets to the bottom of the pickup. This same bar magnet method is also used on humbucker style pickups. These and Affinity pickups, while sized as JM use the non-magnetic poles connected to bar magnets on the bottom of the pickup. That's how they are hybrids. They aren't fully the same as either traditional JM or P90, but have properties of each. This actually makes them an interesting new middle ground. You won't get the same sound of either traditional pickup from this one, but it will still sound similar to both in ways. The way a pickup is magnetized effects its sound as does its size/construction. If you want to understand this a little better, check out DylanTalksTone. He does a lot of pickup videos and has a specific video comparing/contrasting JM and P90 pickups.

Pick guards were originally purposed to be disposable since they were only to protect the wood body from scratches. But it seems no one really replaces pick guards. This guitar has a matching back plate to the same color as the pick guard which is a nice detail. The pick guard is very customized shape, so not easily replaceable. Maybe such low-cost guitars should ship with a second pick guard in an alternate color/design, to encourage players to mix and match 'em. Tasty licks!
@solarismoon30462 жыл бұрын
I've never seen a pickguard from ANY manufacturer that was intended to be replaced. These are integral parts on Fender guitars and are not intended to be removed except for servicing. Otherwise not intended in its' design. Aftermarket manufacturers made these available for custom guitars but now everyone does this no matter who made the guitar. But you won't see these for acoustic guitars unless there has been damage to it. Those are meant to be permanently glued on.
@superblondeDotOrg2 жыл бұрын
@@solarismoon3046 All of the parts on a Fender were designed to be replaceable/swappable including the neck and definitely including the pickguard. Call it "servicing" if you want, it amounts to unscrewing a couple screws and screwing a new replacement on.

@@superblondeDotOrg No - servicing means repairing the instrument. Leo Fender himself called it this because back in the day when people were intelligent and eloquent in their speech is what was known as servicing - not maintenance . These are two different animals altogether. Service meant that the instrument needed to be repaired whereas maintenance is just keeping it in good shape to avoid this. These guitars were never meant to be replaced with aftermarket parts. Back when my brother was a student at Ithaca College, we were visiting him and I slipped away from the Moosewood Restaurant where we always ate into Ithaca guitar works. The storekeeper was very gracious in letting me go into a practice room with an authentic Jaguar. I was quick to note how closely it resembled a Gibson. At the time though, I didn't realize how much that had to do with those P90s or how important they were to the history of the Gibson electric guitar. I felt disappointed that I didn't have any money, because I very easily would have gone home with it if I could have. If I opted to get this Firefly rendition of it, one thing I imagine I would do would be replacing these pickups with the type of soap bar P90s that are in my Telecaster. They still hum, but that hum is canceled when you join the two pickups together.

I just own the spalted orange burst 338. It's a really nice guitar for the money...came pretty well set up. The tuners were terrible and I swapped them and the bridge out. Although, the bridge was fine. I just swapped for a roller. I also swapped the pickups for some Gretsch Broadtrons - a bit crisper sound and not as microphonic. The one flaw is the stop bar. The wood is too soft around the studs to keep them from compressing and loosening. String tension pulls them from the guitar and messes with tuning. I've tried a couple of methods to tighten them up. But, they still eventually work loose again. I'm thinking of changing the tailpiece to a trapeze to get around the problem. Otherwise, the guitar is well made and beautiful to look at. When I started playing guitar a few decades ago, there was no way you could get a guitar anywhere near this nice for less that $500. And, it would be even less likely to find one in the semihollow style for that price.

I'm not crazy about any of the red pickguard versions of the FFJA. They all really seem to clash with the body colors to me. The Sunburst isn't bad though, but I'd still prefer it with just a basic white or white pearloid pickguard. I like the white pearloid models better, color wise, but they are all the more squared off, bound body, which isn't bad, but it's just different. I don't think I've ever seen a bound Jazzmaster until now. And I like the Trans Blue model, but I'm still on the fence of whether or not I actually like the pickguard it has; kind of a blue gray pearloid.

It needed a little set up adjustment (normal stuff), but everything works well and doesnt need to be upgraded as far as a decent, playable guitar. There a few minor finish imperfections, and pickups are subjective. Since they are single coils, they have the typical noise, and the middle position is not noise cancelling. Mine also weighs around 9lbs. It balances well standing (no neck dive) Well worth the price.

If you’re not looking for budget guitars, then why are you even here. I don’t know your age, but they don’t make guitars like they did even going back 10-20 years let alone before that. They aren’t the shitty guitars of yesteryear. Some of these budget lines are built as good if not better than many mid to high end guitars (which are often plagued by QC issues, design flaws, etc.). Budget guitars may cut a few corners and won’t earn as much overhead, but they’re pretty solid instruments as-is or with a few mods like swapping a nut, pickups, saddles, etc.

I have 2 P90 guitars (Epi LP Jr and Jay Turser JT55PTR sg special type) and this doesn't sound anything like them. When Leo designed the Jazzmaster, he used a wider coil form to spread out the magnetic field and give a smoother sound, hoping to attract Jazz players. That tremolo is almost HALF the cost of the entire guitar!! I think it's a Wilkinson Strat style tremolo. Those are Jazzmaster style pickups. They have what is called a wide range design. The inspiration from Leo Fender was to provide a wider field of electrical current which would make a warmer sound. It was intended to spread the electrical field out under the strings so that it would be thicker but without copying Gibson humbuckers. It was design by Freddie Tavares in 1957 or 1958 but had a radically different design than the one that they settled on at Fender. The prototype of the guitar you have had a maple neck originally as it was a Stratocaster neck fitted to the modern Jazzmaster designed body. The pickguard was anodized black aluminum with a white body paint colour. That guitar was the actual prototype for the Fender Jazzmaster that we all know today. It was designed of course for jazz guitarists. It had a rhythm circuit for the neck pickup and one for the bridge. However that may be surfers used it for the sound that they were looking for since it had an offset waist and looked more like a wave than a guitar. The rest is history. The tremolo that it had wasn't as durable or as dynamic as the Stratocaster but it could be locked with a button of the front of the tremolo plate. The original had a 25 1/2 inch scale but the Jaguar had a 24 3/4 inch scale. The Jaguar had serrated steel plates that held it to the guitar. This was intended to direct the current between the strings to reduce unwanted overtones and 60 cycle hum. It had the same tremolo as the Jazzmaster. It also had a "dark circuit" which made it muddy and a kill switch. The Fender guys called it a "strangle switch" as it cut off the sound completely. This was the fourth bottom switch on treble side of the pickguard. Both guitars share the offset Jazzmaster body shape. My friend has started a Firefly collection of the Vs. He was a real big flying V nut back in the day. I noticed that they made the FIREFLY logo the same as the one in the T.V. show made by Josh Wedon. Not a coincidence!

Love it. Looks and sounds great! Might have to get one. However: "Classical JM pickups" aka Jazzmaster pickups, which is a fair amount different from a P90, despite the passing visual similarity (assuming they're really jazzmaster style pickups, which they seem from what I can hear...)

They are Jazzmaster pickups but with bar magnets on each side of the pole pieces. Very similar to a Squier Affinity Jazzmaster pickup.

Given the instrument Firefly is copying here, and the era in which it came about originally, I think the red pickguard really makes it look the part.

Max, I'm just wondering? How much setup if any did you do on your FFJA before this review? Thanks for another stellar review
@killacoiler17072 жыл бұрын
Max, I am with you on how comfortable the Jag/Jazzmaster body is to sling up for long sessions. I have a 1997 Squire Jagmaster Vista that I bought new in January of 97. It has a basswood body and I am Curious what difference it would make if it were Mahogany body. It came with Duncan Design humbuckers that are currently being replaced with a Iron Gear Dirty Torque Bridge and a Blues Engine Neck humbucker. I was going to run a set of Bare knuckle Silo but quite honestly after playing my buddy's T-Style with those Iron Gears in it, I quickly changed my mind. How is the fretwork what radius does the FFJA have? For the money it would be a great base for a custom project as long as it isn't a 50s profile neck. I would be curious if they use a traditional Fender neck pocket and bolt pattern because I would not be against buying one and putting my Vista neck on the Mahogany body to see what kind of tonal change it would make over the Basswood.

AWESOME video as always but I have a "toggle switch" question since I have the same fixation as you. I have noticed some of my FF hollow body guitars have a "weak" switch sound and eventually make a crackling sound when I switch from Bridge to Neck or vice versa. I did notice on your Harley Benton Rocket Launcher guitar build that toggle was SOLID!! Can the switch that you installed on your HB project guitar be used as a toggle for a regular guitar mod???
@christoguichard43112 жыл бұрын
This is virtually identical to the Harley Benton Jazzmaster, and probably made in the same factory.

Those are actually not P90s, though they look like them. P90’s have a bar magnet under the coils…. These pickups are traditional single coil with the magnets as pole pieces.

@louisfryzel46182 жыл бұрын
It doesn't have Jazzmaster pickups from what I've been told. For one thing, it has ceramic bar magnets just like in a P-90. It seems to be sort of a hybrid pickup ... but not a Jazzmaster, at least not what is commonly known as a Jazzmaster pickup with alnico pole pieces.
