You mention the need for better project planning on many of these transit projects. This is a common need across the globe and is not unique to Toronto. Although the Eglinton LRT is exceedingly delayed, it is rather complex. In general, it should naturally be expected for all transit projects to exceed estimated schedules and costs to some non trivial degree. With this in mind, Toronto should be more ambitious in taking on "simpler" transit projects on an ongoing basis so that there can be stability in design/construction staffing and greater predictability in future work. Equally, Toronto should be very reluctant in taking on exceedingly complex transit projects.

Well yes, and that requires better project planning. I think we're on the same page.

To be fair. The recent disclosed cost of the Ontario line included the operating and maintenance costs (over 10 years I believe) in addition to costs not directly related to construction. These costs were not part of initial $10 billion. Of course , there was no cost breakdown for the most recent estimate, so hard to say how much it has actually increased.

Yeah that's why these all start to become arbitrary to some extent.

Great to hear about the progress. The only project I'm not very enthusiastic about is the line 2 extension since I don't think building a fully underground, high capacity heavy metro segment is good value for the money given the ridership projections. Especially since there will be a high frequency rail line not far from it when GO electrification to Unionville is complete. In fact, the Stoufville line tracks are only 2km east of McCowan at Scarborough City Centre. By comparison, the distance between Kennedy and Warden stations on line 2 is about 2.7km. I would have streamlined the transfer at Kennedy and extended the Eglinton LRT north from Kennedy alongside the existing GO tracks before it would then head northwest along the hydro corridor to McCowan before it would head north up McCowan Rd. The road is wide enough to build a dedicated right of way given how far back the buildings are set back. Or it could have been dug cut-n-cover if there was too much opposition to the widening. Cut-n-cover is both cheaper and faster, and while tunnel boring is great to minimize disruption in dense urban settings, I consider it an unnecessary for for low density suburban areas with wide roads. Plus, the amount of tunneling would be far less and the smaller trains would reduce the cost of underground stations. The SRT was originally supposed to be a streetcar to begin with and would have been if the provincial government hadn't wanted to showcase its new automated light metro technology. But it never had the ridership to necessitate a metro. In fact, ridership peaked at only around 40k per weekday which is less than several bus and streetcar routes and is less than what's projected for Finch. Ordinary streetcars carried up to 90k per weekday on King prior to the pandemic but using much longer LRV trains would future proof for population growth. While it wouldn't be quite as fast as the subway, the difference certainly wouldn't warrant the billions in cost difference. And, it would still be quite fast since it would be fully in its own ROW. Plus having cheaper stations would allow for more of them saving people time in accessing the line. And instead of stopping at Sheppard, it could have gone all the way to Finch or even Steeles and still not cost more than the current project since the part of McCowan north of the 401 is much wider and could have easily accommodated a surface ROW to avoid tunneling. As it stands, I'm just hoping the line 2 extension and the Ont line don't see the absurd delays of Eglinton.

4:42 , track alignment corrections on the Eglinton LRT. In other words the workers got the gauge wrong. Can the workers read blueprints? Do they know how a measuring tape works? How many workers are high?

I noticed that during your discussion of the Line-2 extension, the images are of the Ontario-Line work.

Yeah I might have overlapped it. That lrt was going so slowly that I was worried that people would get bored and click away 😉

Thanks for the update on Toronto transit projects. I know it’s not part of Toronto proper but any updates on the Hazel mccalion LRT in Mississauga?

Coming soon. People need to get tired of Toronto first ;)

Still another 5 Months ?? This is beyond Ridiculous?? They just literally repeat the same excuses ? Are they looking for absolute perfection on opening day ??? Why not at the very least open the underground portion??....
