The country is a dysfunctional business. They charge what they want and don’t have to deliver on any promise of service all whilst giving away billions. Corruption clearly pays a part but I think the most common theme is incompetence. Other people’s money is easily spent on the wrong things.

Too soon for pay per mile, it will happen one day, but system we have works without a lot of overheads for government. Fuel stations collect all the money rather than billing everyone individually, privacy issues if government have to know where you are driving at what time, how would they enforce black box technology in older cars - would need lots of ANPR to check for a ping from onboard equipment or the black box could be left at home. Far more likely is a simple flat rate version of pay via milage reading matched to MOT/service data, open to abuse but lots cheaper to implement. Could have a base allowance of milage that covers each class of vehicle for a starting fee than add pence per miles to that. Full technical solution would have to come from integrated technology and that would need a start date. Can't see why a government would move away from a form of the system we have for any ICE vehicles.

"It will happen one day" Pay per mile will be here within a year....... Fuel stations won't be collecting the money once sales volumes of petrol and diesel reduce due to the move to EV's... A new system will be needed, hence pay per mile. The tax burden will switch to actual road *usage* Most cars built within the last 10 to 12 years already have a tracking facility incorporated. It simply needs activating. You just were not aware of it....
@chrisbailey1966
@chrisbailey1966 8 күн бұрын
@@Brian-om2hh There are possibilities with newer cars especially EVs as they would be the first target. Not sure any existing tracking (I'm guessing you mean Sat Nav systems or like my car a built-in SIM) would be compatibly with an invoicing system as that is going to need time coded into the information for true road pricing rather than just total distance recording. I'm sure they will also need some anti-tamper measures too. Without that the possibility is a simple distance based system, but that is not as 'good' as the present system as there would be no incentive to use efficient (less polluting) vehicles if the majority of the tax is on distance as the fuel costs would then not differ much unless the distance charge has banding by MPG. Does nothing to encourage off-peak road use either. Gov. computer systems never work first time and the target group is not that big yet to move everyone over. So EVs will be the test subjects for a while yet, it really depends on details rather than headlines and for it to work on older cars some form of black box - which seems a lot of effort when they are most likely to be ICE vehicles.

Morning Jim, I agree with your comments on merging traffic, but the merging trafffic should also remember they should make some effort to match the speed of the traffic in that lane. Also, when traffic is joining the motorway, it was always called an exceleration lane when I started driving, so the clue was in the name. You should match the speed of the traffic on the motorway, then it is easy to move into the gap. Once on the motorway you can adjust your cruising speed. And don't get me on the use of indicators🤪😜

Hi mate good video insight I read on friday about SAIC which owns MG amongst others will bring SS battery vehicles to the masses from early next year. This is only the start of newer BEVs to come and considering SS batteries will be in their infancy in under 15 years I'm sure with developments they will get ever closer to the holy grail of the "7 minute charge" which if you didn't know is the average time it takes to fill an average ICE vehicle up with fuel. Personally I've always believed BEVs would be the future as if you consider ICE vehicles have been around for over 100 years they Will only get better! It's why I'm on my 2nd taxi using the technology. Cheers

No it doesn't work when people reach the end of a lane and move in at the last minute what it does is it causes a bottle neck holding up the entire lane that they are moving into and that's just makes no sense at all, this causes that lane that they are moving into to very often completely stop when really what we want to try and achieve is to keep all lanes of traffic moving as much as possible at all times even if that's at slower rate of movement, merging gradually helps alleviate this problem and I'm always for what makes driving better for everyone on the road rather than just a few entitled individuals in just one lane, its not about being polite it's about what keeps everyone moving we all have somewhere to be families and jobs to get to so lets make it better for everyone...

This could easily be linked to MoT collected mileage data, with cars under 3 years old being offered an on-line mileage submission. A weighting factor can be applied based on the individual vehicle specification, perhaps a combination of emissions and curb weight?

In our small town the council have put in 16 slow chargers which are fine to charge over night. At no cost to them. Developer pays and takes the profit. Car parking charges at a £1 overnight. All walkable in 10mins from anywhere in town. Hopefully yours will extract a digit too. Chicken and egg. At the moment no one uses them but they are there for when people do want them.

I think pay per mile and no other taxes would work , the government should then bring back incentives to buy EV’s otherwise there will be a lot of old cars on the road . The only people buying an EV will be business drivers . The private sector is at a huge disadvantage

The pay per mile is likely to make everyone's road tax at £3,000/yr plus. Because as ever they will have 200,000 employees collecting the tax. If they want it to totally replace fuel tax then think about paying £5,000/yr.

How will the pay per mile work? How will they know how many miles have been done? Will this re-introduce a modern version of clocking? The motorist will no doubt need to fund the mileage box and its installation. What p***es me off is if every driver decided to leave their car at home and use public transport it couldn’t cope anyway. It’s all about maximising the shaft of the public.

I am sure Geoff Buys Cars did a video saying that the RAC did NOT say that they wanted a pay per mile scheme. They put out a statement to that effect apparently. However, when it does inevitably arrive, I'd say it will be in addition to the other taxes, low to start with and then creep up. The government see the motorists as cash cows. They will use it as yet another way of getting people out of ICE cars

I don't know about the RAC, but the Head of the AA - Edmund King - was allegedly involved in discussions with the government regarding the development of a system of Road Tolls. His wife is also said to have assisted him to arrive at what could be a workable road pricing scheme. Of course once the government has a play around with it, then it could turn out rather differently......

The government should provide a market driven approach , and punish diesel and petrol users to promote cleaner drivers using a mix as you describe…… this will allow other tech like hydrogen to come to market……
@DefinitelyNotAGuru
@DefinitelyNotAGuru 9 күн бұрын
I think they’re already doing that with the taxes and duties on fossil fuels. Hydrogen seems likely to always be very expensive given the fact that the creation of it uses so much energy - and it then needs to be converted back to electricity again (unless we ever see mainstream hydrogen “engines”)

When batteries start to deteriorate like my iPhone battery the EV car market will crash.
@DefinitelyNotAGuru
@DefinitelyNotAGuru 9 күн бұрын
Your iPhone battery lasts 2/3 years before it gets down to 80% right? There are plenty of 10-15 year old EVs still on the road with huge mileage on them that have had almost zero servicing and still have 80%+ of their battery life remaining and battery tech is getting better every year - most of those batteries could be repaired/refurbished for the fraction of the cost of a new engine - so what’s your point Alan?
@Brian-om2hh
@Brian-om2hh 9 күн бұрын
Nonsense. There are plenty of 10 year old EV's - including those belonging to KZbin users. Your iPhone doesn't have a heat pump or battery management..... One particular user of an MG5 electric estate car - who operates a 24/7 call out service - has put 120k miles on his 71 reg MG5, and the battery state of health is still at 92% He posts videos here on KZbin regarding the car's progress... His first set of front tyres lasted 41k miles, which is yet another silly EV myth busted.

I’ve a 50k 8 year old Leaf as a daily with old tech and no heat pump or thermal management and it’s still over 90% state of health. The second hand battery has value if the car gets scrapped. All the batteries are recyclable.
