This video offers a fascinating glimpse into the highly regimented life of ancient Sparta, shaped by Lycurgus's radical reforms. The emphasis on military prowess and social control stands out, with details like the brutal Krypteia and the Agoge's harsh training methods leaving a lasting impression. However, the role of Spartan women owning land and enjoying freedoms beyond other Greek societies adds a surprising layer of complexity. Overall, it's a well-presented exploration of a society renowned for its discipline and unique structure.

While Sparta now has a positive reputation because their military is cool, their state was objectively one of the most awful and horrific to ever exist. I find it sad that they get praise for a last stand that failed which overlooks all the atrocities they committed against their own people. Nice video btw
@papertoyss Жыл бұрын
Criticizing an era 2,800 years ago with modern day criteria, leads to false conclusions. Also, their last stand did not fail. This claim of yours only proves that you dont have a good relation with history.

Everyone back then committed atrocities. The whole Persian wars with the greeks were started because of an atrocity committed by Athens.

Loved the video. Adding one interesting detail from the Lives. Spartans were taught to communicate with the fewest number of words possible. They were esteemed for their short, sarcastic, quick wit and hated long speeches. I think the USA would benefit tremendously from this lol.

Very nice video. However I think it’s important to include that Lycurgus abolished personal property and gold money attempting a pacifist, self-sufficient society. The evolution of Sparta into a culture of slavery and constant warfare is a tragic warning from history.

Not bad but lacking in nuance. No mention of the fact that we have no records left behind by Spartans; what we know is provided by non-Spartans, some who viewed Sparta favorably and some who did not. So, much should be taken with a grain of salt (beyond the actual organization of the Spartan government). A few other things: in a kingdom of Equals, there can be No "aristocracy" as is mentioned by the narrator....and, one cannot be a slave and a serf. Biggest difference between the two is that serfs cannot be sold and therefore are pretty much tied to the land. This might not sound like much, but it does keep the families intact, something Southern slaves would have surely welcomed if they had ever moved up from slave to serf. And I think it worth noting, if I am correct about this, that Sparta's constitution was the first in ancient Greece (?). If so, that is pretty impressive.

Julian, I hope you'll read this after 2 months ? As a specialized scholar and Greek tourguide, please "allow me" to correct some misunderstood conceptions. The term :"Spartan aristocracy" did not exsist. the Spartan upper class sosciety (including the 2 Kings) were the "SAME ONES", tarslated from the word "Ομοιοι" (ΟΜΕΕΥ),wrongly translated as "EQUALS". There waws NO written constitution. The politic system was "oligarchic" (Greek word, meaning the "few leadind", I suggest you to read the speach of Spartan general Vrasidas son of Tellis to the Halkidiki states, as he emphsized the oligarchy,: at Thoucycidis book "Peloponesean war"). Also, the first written contitution of the world, was in Athens around 620-610 BCE from the Athenian legislator SOLON son of Existekidis. Thank you, Thanos tourguide tourtripgreece.gr
