Yes he has a series on Nature Journaling, getting started with it and "homework assignments" those aren't longer than 15 minutes or so. But he's got much longer videos about an hour and a half about drawing birds, or drawing certain types of flowers and on and on. *John Muir Laws* channel. He's in California too, I recognize some of the places he goes. I am not that good at drawing, but if I watch and follow along with one of his videos I end up with something I can recognize as pretty close to what he drew. He goes into detail on drawing bird feet, or bird wings and it's pretty extensive. I should get his book. And he is going for realism, because you want someone else reading your journal to be able to identify the plant or lizard or stream from the picture of it. Almost like botanical drawings. I think he has a website with suggested materials, like a bag to carry your sketching materials, sketchbooks, watercolors too I think and tools.

Oooh yeah, I'm getting this book for sure! I'll probably get the physical version because I work better that way, but the convenience of having it digitally is alluring... If I have a specific plan I could always photo the relevant pages, but of course that means I wouldn't have access to anything I might need to reference. I wish they did like my textbook publisher and include a digital version with the purchase of a physical book :P

Oh yes that would be amazing... I think that should be an option when purchasing, I'd pay a few more dollars for that. Now I kinda wish I had it also digital. But I should explore it more first ;) I admit I have not really used it since I bought it, I think now is the perfect time to take it outside and learn!

I ordered this because I am very interested in botanical and animal painting. I got it immediately and am very pleased with it. I think it can be very handy when if a person wants a much looser style. Thank you for the look at this for others. The price on Amazon US is wonderful for the size and scope.

Have been looking at whether it is worth buying this book as a beginner to botanical painting. This review by Irit is really amazing and confirms this is a book for excellent reference and study.

I've been hiking on the John Muir Trail in California. Not the entire length of it, but I did the part that includes the summit of the tallest mountain in the lower 48 states. And it's amazing to me that John Muir was able to hike that entire length without any trails, or anywhere to get new food supplies. How? I want to read some biography of him. We ran into a bear and her cub our first full day of hiking. I got great pictures. This was right after we had finished lunch and had to wait for 2 rattlesnakes to get out of our way before we could proceed on the trail. People die every year trying to climb that mountain. We didn't do it in the snow. August, and the summit of the mountain was still covered with snow a month earlier in July. I went in 2009. You can look up Mt Whitney on google Earth and you can see the zig zag trails coming down from the summit. I was there. Pretty weird you can see that from a satellite image they are single file trails. I took photos all the time and wrote each day about how far we hiked, elevation gained, which campsite we were staying at and anything eventful that happened. I really want to flesh out the writing and add photos to make a better document. Probably my favorite thing I've done in my life, would not trade it for anything. It's an other worldly experience. I saw plants that simply don't exist at lower elevations. Areas that looked like sandy beaches and driftwood, but far from any ocean. It was caused by snow melt runoff and being under snow most of the year. Vast meadows, large forests, stunning waterfall after stunning waterfall. Just amazing. And of course the meteor shower in August viewed from high elevation all night long, one shooting star after another. i

Thank you for this review. Is the text block sewn? It looks as though the book needs to be opened up more because some information is very close into the centre. It certainly has a lot of detail. I think this book would inspire me to go on to more specialist books to learn more. A very generous author.

Beautiful book. His Birds book and book for educators are equally as good. An excellent book for those who enjoy this is: The Field Guide to Drawing & Sketching Animals by Tim Pond. Superior quality content to most books and is only £12. Similar size.
