American here. We often shop at M & S when in London because we stay for 1-2 weeks at a time and save money by eating from grocery stores or small shops versus restaurants, plus it’s healthier. We enjoy the cultural experience of shopping there too. Food is 10-30% higher here and in the US it’s often taxed 6-10%, varies by state. Items like those bakery goods, cheese trays, etc. are convenient for tourists. Crossing my fingers that your new Labor government will work to lower your energy costs! Thanks for taking us shopping, Hannah!!

@@georgedyson9754M&S is UK's most expensive food store in the UK (delis/specialty stores aside). Cooking from scratch you wouldn't go to M&S as most of the food is pre-prepared - and generally tasty (their curries are especially good!). This store, centre of London, great place to buy a bite to eat when travelling in London. Other supermarkets are way cheaper - Aldi, Lidl, Morrisons and Sainsbury's and Tesco low cost ranges (The small 'metro' versions in city centres are pricier). My husband was in Canada in Aug and found prices higher in regular supermarkets (he went to Sobeys, food basics and Fortinos and I think Loblaws). He said the in season corn, peaches and tomatoes (all awesome obvs) were cheaper but the prices in Canada for cheese, high fat butter and cream and all dairy were way higher .... except the more pre-prepared dairy eg cheese slices and ice cream. However, UK prices for basic foods, housing and energy have gone up so much that many are struggling. 🙏That is not the case in Canada.

But we also have stores called Publix that started in Florida but now are moving into Tennessee and the Carolinas. They have a lot of prepared foods. We used to have a really posh store called Brunos. You had to have a black/gold credit card just to go in there. Lol. But that closed when the whole family that ran it died in a plane crash. Bummer. Fresh Market is also pricey and of course, that's my nearest one. When I'm really old I will have to go around to dollar tree ( pound shops I think you call them lol ) for my canned goods and then get some meat for nine dollars an ounce at Fresh market when I cannot drive to a regular store anymore. A difference that I noticed between the food in London compared to where I live in Canada is that the serving sizes are smaller. For instance, for a pack of buns, the buns would be packaged in 8 or 12 buns per package. Also, the meat packages show 4 servings of meat, whereas in Canada it would be at least 8 servings. Honestly, in my opinion, we don't need such big serving sizes. Your cost of 42 pounds would be about 75 Canadian dollars. I absolutely fell in love with London and hope to visit again soon. Greetings from Georgian Bay, Ontario, Canada 🇨🇦 Love your video style, so interesting, so much fun, to discover London, and beyond 🌟 I’d shop at Marks & Spencer’s, in a heart beat. Their food prices are a real bargain, in comparison with Canadian food retailers ! Thanks, Hannah, Great Video 🌟

I go to a Marks Food shop two times a week Hannah. As they cater for people who dont want to cook every day with such a marvellous selection of top quality food it certainly is a lovely temptation.Another great food video Hannah.

Loved getting this M&S fix. I miss it so much. Our supermarkets here in Australia are not as good with the variety. Thanks for sharing! Love your work ❤

My late mother in law used to work at an M&S food hall - and that is why none of her children could cook. That’s what she fed the family! But I taught my husband to cook, and after years of practice he’s terrific now. In my country it’s the reverse of the UK - the food can be dear (our food has the equivalent of VAT added to it) but the fuel is cheap, so it pays to cook for yourself.

Thanks Hannah for showing so many things about food and places and prices!! We are from Zurich and we just got back from London and been there for 3 weeks!! Another excellent video Hannah. No one comes close to M&S Food, Waitrose don't touch the sides. Hannah made me laugh when you were looking at the Pancakes and you said they were easy to make. Lol, would love to see you make one. Look forward to your next video 👍👍😁😎

Pancakes are ludicrously easy to make. I did them all the time as a child in the '70s. What completely jogged my noggin was packets of "pancake mix" in the shops. It just didn't make any sense - packets of flour labelled as "pancake mix" and costing 1000% more?
@LeeJohn706 ай бұрын
@@Drew-Dastardly A person living on there own it's still cheaper to buy ready made, different if you have a family.
@Drew-Dastardly6 ай бұрын
@@LeeJohn70 No. I live on my own now - instead of pancake mix I just whisk together 1 egg, 50g flour - a food cupboard staple - and 150ml milk (like I would have to do with the premade mix anyway).

Fruit and veg in M & S is usually really top quality and lasts for a long time in the fridge. Some of the cheaper supermarkets seem good value but raspberries are often mouldy within a day. Also 2 high welfare chicken legs at £1.65 is really good value. As you say, you need to be selective but they do expect people to buy the high price prepared food which is where they make their profits. We all love M & S but £1.25 for a scone is extortionate but they are lovely. Great vlog. Thanks for giving us the tour x

Wow Hannah , really enjoyed this video. Here in Canada , the costs would be at least 30% more than the prices you showed. Your prices are so cheap !

Hannah you always look so beautiful you need not worry, but eating heathier is a good way to go, but we do like our treats. Cheering for England today in soccer.

*cries in Canadian* When I moved to London, I was shocked at how low the cost of groceries and living there actually was. I think the only thing that is about the same price as my area of Canada and London is the cost of real estate/ rent. But in general, everything else is at the very least, a minimum in Canada 2x as much. Out of curiosity, I used to do a normal monthly online grocery shopping comparison with tescos and Morrisons compared to Walmart in Canada and with conversion it usually came to anywhere from 6-7x the cost in Canada compared to London food prices. The last time i did the comparison though, the food prices in London did increase but the shop was still around 4x now expensive in Canada than London with far lesser quality food in Canada. Combine that with the extremely cheap phone plans, internet, insurance, etc and I saved so much money whilst living in London during those years. Short story long, I'm totally jealous of your shopping today 😂
@anaalves36586 ай бұрын
Is internet and cell phone chargers very expensive in Canada? I'm in Portugal and it's pretty cheap for us. I don't know how much it is in the UK.
@georgedyson97544 ай бұрын
I don't understand that. I suppose it depends on what you eat but my food costs have only risen slightly over the recent years. I would certainly make most of those items at home for less than the prices shown here. I do buy everything as the basic ingredients and for many items I buy the largest size possible if it is not going to deteriorate. For example - Two full size pork tenderloins in both Loblaw and Sobeys is about $8 (about 4 pounds UK, I suppose) and makes 6 meals. Then some fresh vegetables depending on availability and pricing. These prices in M&S look double that to me!

Thanks for sharing Hannah! Yes a monthly food vlog would be great. Not living in the UK I do miss the choice of supermarkets and the convenience of M&S food as we have nothing like it here in Oz. Wishing you a wonderful weekend! 😎

The M&S Food Hall in Marble Arch (across from Selfridge's is our regular food store in our annual monthly visit to London. Our place is only 3 blocks from the Food Hall, so we walk there and shop every other day. They have an in store bakery and we love their fresh cranberry and nut loaves. Nice fresh fish. I also go to the back of stack of food to get the longest to outdate product. We don't buy to go prepared food, but many people working around Oxford Street and Marble Arch buy their lunches there. We find the prices reasonable, cheaper than the Waitrose down the street in the ground floor of John Lewis. There are no other big grocery stores nearby.

I miss Marks & Spencer... it was a real treat when we lived in Ireland to go to Galway (closest to us) and do some shopping at Marks & Sparks. Since moving back to California I have fallen in love with Sprouts - but they don't have the variety of ready made foods that M&S do. Great video Hannah!

I LOVE Marks&Sparks for food shopping. I used it daily in South Africa under the Woolies brand name) and really one would never have needef to cook for any meal or dinner party. The best quality, prepared beautifully, almost worth the insanely high bill😅. Thanks Hannah for another fun video☘️

Okay as a mom of a toddler I would do anything to have access to that prepared and semi-prepared food section! (The cheese platters! The little snacky bits for picnics! yum!) Many of the options look flavourful and relatively healthy. I also love the displays/deals you showed with a main+sides, which is brilliant because I hate food planning. Here in Canada the food prices are comparable if not more expensive than much of what you showed, and after grocery shopping in the US recently (in a generally less expensive part of the US) I can confirm food prices are waaay higher in the US right now even at average grocery stores in average towns. Though I realize you noted how high your energy costs are, and I suppose that's where we come out a little ahead, especially where I am in Canada.
