Apparently, comedy producers believe that shoehorning an obvious reference to their own shortcomings is a sure-fire way to circumvent them. It's not. Please stop doing it. It isn't cute or clever, simply tired and desperate.

The Jump Street ones are fully intentional, especially in 22, whose status as a completely pointless sequel to a reboot is ridiculed for the entire movie. And the Hot Tub Time Machine ones must be as tongue-in-cheek as the glaringly obvious title (and title drop). But man, the rest of them. Especially the Vacation one, Jesus Christ.

Yep in Jump Street it's basically the theme of the movie and it's done very well; e.g. the low-budget finale was hilarious. But it would make for a dreadful third movie if they go there again.

Alejandro Vasquez not to mention hot tub time machine was before all the other ones. It was before the trend.

It was a pointless reboot to a once good show that wasn't a dumb comedy

thanks for this. you summed it up succinctly.

IMHO the laziest joke is the Ryan Reynolds joke, in which something crazy happens and he says "that just happened". then when someone's editing the trailer together, they'll include that but with a record scratch right before the line.

Is this Meta Meta? Have we found the Meta Knight?

these were fine years ago, and hell I still laugh at some if they're funny enough, but yeah there should be less of these and more actual, clever jokes.
