I think Freddie is still one of the best players in a Leafs jersey. He needs competent defence in front of him. That said, as a Thunder Bay boy myself, and life-long Leafs fan, I could cheer for Murray in the blue&white.

Get some defence then see what Freddy can do. We finally have a solid backup in Campbell. Maybe Campbell will push Freddy to be better. So what if he walks after this year. We will have 5 million extra to spend on a goalie. Murray wont help this team. Pietrangelo isn’t enough. We need two good tough right shot defencemen. I like Tavares but when we signed him we didn’t need him. We needed defence back then and still do now. When we gave Tavares 11 million Marner and Matthews wanted that much too. Nobody taking a home team discount. I would have let Nylander and Marner sit out for not taking a fair offer from the team. That would have showed that management has some balls. Take our fair offer or you are getting shipped out. Matthews is the only untouchable on the team. I would trade Nylander and Marner (they pissed me off by holding out) use that money to get two good tough defencemen and a gritty forward or two.

Freddie at $6.5 million for 2 years and it's drop the puck. I am afraid that conversation has come and went though or it probably would be done by now. Matt Murray @ $3.5 million.... I would roll the dice. I really like Dylan DeMelo's game, and if the Jets don't re-sign him... KD will be waiting.

Desperate GM's who's job is potentially on the line will do risky trades to sacrifice a team's future. Watch out for some heady duty moves this season. I'd still prefer 2 solid cost effective $5M per dmen over pietroangelo.

Leafs need a solid goalie and better defense. Start with Murray and trade Nylander and Andersen to Canes get back a D and first round pick. Marincin is not a NHL player and should NOT be on the team

Dubas should be Fired unless he pulls something off that makes the team better Pieces to the puzzle that fit perfectly. Maybe new Management. 3 goalies we should have Campbell and two more . Defense and some new Forwards.

Petriangelo is only worth 50 mill at 7yrs contract and not a penny more. Dubas has to make sure he does not mess up this deal. We need him big time but we can't overpay.

Tampa loses to the Jackets, next season wins the Cup. A few good moves this off season and this team could have a similar trajectory. I'm still a little skeptical but hopeful.

There's an interesting parallel between Manchester United FC and the Leafs. Both squads have big name, expensive players on offense and both squads underperform. Man U's most expensive player (Pogba) can't be bothered to play defense. They can't get rid of him. Their highest paid defender- 80 mil- transfer fee (McGuire) can't defend. They can't get rid of him. The other defenders were brought in to play the ball out of the back and not defend. They can't get rid of them either. They just lost 6-1 at home. The transfer market closes on Monday. They will spend hundreds of millions of euros to bring in more offensive players and they will be no better off because offense isn't their problem. Or you could be Liverpool who has Virgil Van Dyke at centerback. He gives the team almost nothing on offense, but no one scores six on Liverpool as long as he's breathing. Liverpool had over 100 points and the championship race was over by Christmas. What's the lesson here?

Leafs getting Petroangelo...no...no...no...no. No money to do so. Just think; had they not signed Tavares, they'd have had a 30 goal scorer in Kadri as their second centre; Mathew Marner and Nylander would have made less...savings all around to sign better D. You don't need superstars...maybe one. Besides the other players lose some desire when 4 guys make all the money. I'm for thinking about trading Marner. Will Dubas change his thinking? Defence always wins over offense

I am sorry Mike, but you are comparing apples and oranges here. All teams you mentioned had their top players took a paycut to keep the team together while the Leafs' floaters broke the bank thanks to an incompetent GM that traded away all gritty guys with cap friendly salaries. I am predicting they'll miss the playoffs again which is not bad because it means the firing of Dubas

Dubas hamstrung the team paying four players the lion's share of their operating budget, does it makes sense for him to continue this irresponsible behaviour with signing Pietrangelo?
