It's amazing that not a single earthquake has ever happened there! Then again, even though the tower has remained standing for centuries, considering all the modern technologies, isn't it possible to disassemble the tower, establish the proper foundation and then have the tower rebuilt upon that foundation? It's just a thought, you know. After all, I only care so much about it, since whenever it does collapse, I'll still be 1,000's of miles away from it, just as I am now...

it would never be perfectly straight because when the lean started during construction, the builders compensated by making the walls on the leaning side taller to level it out a bit, it's actually pretty visually noticeable . Surprisingly, the following piece of information is missing in this video. This piece of information, I believe, can explain why the bell tower did not topple: "Construction of the tower occurred IN THREE STAGES over 199 years. In 1173, the foundations of the tower were laid. The tower began to sink after construction had progressed to the second floor in 1178. This was due to a mere three-metre foundation, set in weak, unstable subsoil, a design that was flawed from the beginning. Construction was subsequently halted for almost a century, as the Republic of Pisa was almost continually engaged in battles. THIS ALLOWED TIME FOR THE UNDERLYING SOIL TO SETTLE. Otherwise, the tower would almost certainly have toppled. Between 1233 and 1272 , the works resumed. In an effort to compensate for the tilt, the engineers BUILT UPPER FLOORS WITH ONE SIDE TALLER THAN THAN THE OTHER. Because of this, the tower is CURVED. Construction was halted again in 1284 when the Pisans were defeated in an important battle. The seventh floor was completed in 1319. The bell-chamber was finally added in 1372. [Source: Wikipedia]

The point they missed here is that even if the lean angle is brought to zero, it will still not be straight. Reason; it was never built straight. Actually they tried to straightened it up during construction but tilting didn't stop and we got a wonder of the world.

To everyone saying that digging on the other side was your first thought: it was mine too, BUT there are other factors at play. I don't know a ton about it so I can't say for sure, but i assume the reason they didn't do this before was because of a lack of technology. To burrow into soil that has had a tower that heavy pressing down on it for that many centuries has to take an incredible amount of power--and, on top of that, to do it without destabilizing the tower with all the movement from said power. I don't know for sure, but i think it's a safe bet to say that the engineers weren't just plain stupid. I would be very interested in a follow up video on why nobody did this before!
