To make their prediction of the tower falling one day come to pass. Anyway it wouldn't a tourist site if the fault is totally corrected. Once it still leans, it something for us all to learn about and appreciate.
@RebSike
@RebSike 5 жыл бұрын
it would never be perfectly straight because when the lean started during construction, the builders compensated by making the walls on the leaning side taller to level it out a bit, it's actually pretty visually noticeable . If it were straightened at the base, it would be curved a bit in the opposite direction of the lean.

Engineering is an integral facet of architectural design. Arches themselves have to do with the properties particularly of concrete and stone in compression and stresses, the form itself and compression distribution forcing the entire underside of the arch closer together actually makes the structure stronger. So yes... architectural failure.

To everyone saying that digging on the other side was your first thought: it was mine too, BUT there are other factors at play. I don't know a ton about it so I can't say for sure, but i assume the reason they didn't do this before was because of a lack of technology. To burrow into soil that has had a tower that heavy pressing down on it for that many centuries has to take an incredible amount of power--and, on top of that, to do it without destabilizing the tower with all the movement from said power. I don't know for sure, but i think it's a safe bet to say that the engineers weren't just plain stupid. I would be very interested in a follow up video on why nobody did this before!

Surprisingly, the following piece of information is missing in this video. This piece of information, I believe, can explain why the bell tower did not topple: "Construction of the tower occurred IN THREE STAGES over 199 years. In 1173, the foundations of the tower were laid. The tower began to sink after construction had progressed to the second floor in 1178. This was due to a mere three-metre foundation, set in weak, unstable subsoil, a design that was flawed from the beginning. Construction was subsequently halted for almost a century, as the Republic of Pisa was almost continually engaged in battles. THIS ALLOWED TIME FOR THE UNDERLYING SOIL TO SETTLE. Otherwise, the tower would almost certainly have toppled. Between 1233 and 1272 , the works resumed. In an effort to compensate for the tilt, the engineers BUILT UPPER FLOORS WITH ONE SIDE TALLER THAN THAN THE OTHER. Because of this, the tower is CURVED. Construction was halted again in 1284 when the Pisans were defeated in an important battle. The seventh floor was completed in 1319. The bell-chamber was finally added in 1372. [Source: Wikipedia]

They should dig another time underneath the higher side to make it 3°, otherwise any earthquake or natural disaster can crush this great tower down. The soil underneath the tower is ex-swamp region, so there must be a layer of semi solid soil that previously caused it to lean. Also it seems risky to go up in top of the tower, public access can be lethal if something wrong happens.

The leaning tower of Pisa wont fall due to something called dymanic soil structure interaction, which describes the relationship between the soils softness and the tower's height and rigidty.

Glad the engineers didn't cause too much damage in the process of trying to 'save' it. China tried that with their wall and it turned into a disaster, hope this tower will stand for many more generations to come.

The work finished in 2001 brought the tower to the lean it has two centuries earlier; presumably 1801. That lean (or worse) did not cause the tower to collapse for anothrt 200 years, despite rescue efforts that seems to have made it worse. It does not appear that it will collapse - at least not due to the lean - in the near future.

I hate to admit it as an engineer but this isn't an architect's mistake. It's an engineer's mistake. The architect is not responsible for ground investigations (finding out how the ground behaves and its properties), a geotechnical engineer deals with these things.

It's amazing that not a single earthquake has ever happened there! Then again, even though the tower has remained standing for centuries, considering all the modern technologies, isn't it possible to disassemble the tower, establish the proper foundation and then have the tower rebuilt upon that foundation? It's just a thought, you know. After all, I only care so much about it, since whenever it does collapse, I'll still be 1,000's of miles away from it, just as I am now...

Eventually it'll reach a degree of tilt that sends it past the point of no return and it will collapse. The fact this hasn't happened yet after 8 centuries is beyond impressive. Even the great Cathedral of Notre Dame finally met it's end, and I'm blessed to say I saw it in it's full original glory just before the fire destroyed it while on deployment in the Navy. This tower however, is something entirely different in its own right. The Italians know how to make quality structures that can stand the test of time for many, many centuries. After all, they have their Roman ancestors and their achievements to thank for that.

@@robl496 you obviously didn’t watch it either. It took centuries but they fixed it and left it leaning intentionally at a safe angle because it was so iconic as the *leaning* Tower of Piza. Twat.

No cap, the first solution I though of would be to dig under the higher part slowly and gravity readjust it. Idk wtf all the other engineer were doing by using liquid nitrogen, steel cables, and cement. Literally the definition of over-engineering.
@chrislockard1922
@chrislockard1922 3 жыл бұрын
Its common when drilling because when you dig it starts getting water inside the hole youre drilling so liquid nitrogen freezes the water.
