it would never be perfectly straight because when the lean started during construction, the builders compensated by making the walls on the leaning side taller to level it out a bit, it's actually pretty visually noticeable . If it were straightened at the base, it would be curved a bit in the opposite direction of the lean.

To everyone saying that digging on the other side was your first thought: it was mine too, BUT there are other factors at play. I don't know a ton about it so I can't say for sure, but i assume the reason they didn't do this before was because of a lack of technology. To burrow into soil that has had a tower that heavy pressing down on it for that many centuries has to take an incredible amount of power--and, on top of that, to do it without destabilizing the tower with all the movement from said power. I don't know for sure, but i think it's a safe bet to say that the engineers weren't just plain stupid. I would be very interested in a follow up video on why nobody did this before!

Surprisingly, the following piece of information is missing in this video. This piece of information, I believe, can explain why the bell tower did not topple: "Construction of the tower occurred IN THREE STAGES over 199 years. In 1173, the foundations of the tower were laid. The tower began to sink after construction had progressed to the second floor in 1178. This was due to a mere three-metre foundation, set in weak, unstable subsoil, a design that was flawed from the beginning. Construction was subsequently halted for almost a century, as the Republic of Pisa was almost continually engaged in battles. THIS ALLOWED TIME FOR THE UNDERLYING SOIL TO SETTLE. Otherwise, the tower would almost certainly have toppled. Between 1233 and 1272 , the works resumed. In an effort to compensate for the tilt, the engineers BUILT UPPER FLOORS WITH ONE SIDE TALLER THAN THAN THE OTHER. Because of this, the tower is CURVED. Construction was halted again in 1284 when the Pisans were defeated in an important battle. The seventh floor was completed in 1319. The bell-chamber was finally added in 1372. [Source: Wikipedia]

They should dig another time underneath the higher side to make it 3°, otherwise any earthquake or natural disaster can crush this great tower down. The soil underneath the tower is ex-swamp region, so there must be a layer of semi solid soil that previously caused it to lean. Also it seems risky to go up in top of the tower, public access can be lethal if something wrong happens.

Eventually it'll reach a degree of tilt that sends it past the point of no return and it will collapse. The fact this hasn't happened yet after 8 centuries is beyond impressive. Even the great Cathedral of Notre Dame finally met it's end, and I'm blessed to say I saw it in it's full original glory just before the fire destroyed it while on deployment in the Navy. This tower however, is something entirely different in its own right. The Italians know how to make quality structures that can stand the test of time for many, many centuries. After all, they have their Roman ancestors and their achievements to thank for that.
