Do it. Math is much less work than CS in my opinion. That's because as long as you understand something, proving it is very easy, because it's all theory. A proof can be written in one line. 10 proofs and you have a problem set finished. In CS, it can take a lot of time to prove you can do something since you have to actually grind out the application. In liberal arts, it takes freaking ages to prove something, since they make you write all those damn essays. I spent about an hour a week per class on hw for my math degree. Ez pz. Also, to save time elsewhere, I just didn't attend my business classes and aced all of them. They put the notes online and it's so easy to understand... What's the point of wasting time in class? Beating the curve there is easy because, you guessed it, those students suck at math.

@achyuththouta69573 жыл бұрын
@@michaelcallahan8412 Most of it is kind of incorrect. You need problem solving skills in math. Most of the time you'll be staring at a problem waiting for inspiration to hit you. And sometimes things will start to work and you'll have no idea how you got close to solving it. If you think it's easy then try solving the reimann hypothesis or try proving the Wallis product in an entirely new way. Chances are you'll probably never be able to solve both of them even after spending a lifetime because many mathematicians have dedicated their lives to solve the former problem and none of them have succeeded so far

Goverment engineers have much more stable jobs and while you may not start with the highest pay, the more experience you gain the more you will make. I know engineers that started as interns at goverment engineering programs back in their undergrad and then got jobs in those same government positions right out of college while doing their masters. Decades later most of them are doing extremely well off, a lot of them used the many years of experience in goverment to transition over to industry management positions but there are also some who went into the higher level goverment management positions which are jobs that are extremely hard to lose. Goverment benefits are also great. It might not be the most glamorous work but it is really stable and it isn't mindless work either.

Engineering is perfect for me on top of that I got A’s on all of my subjects so I’m studying in college right now for free (the government chooses students with high grades and pays for them depending on the major). But I might get a masters degree which would cost me a lot of money if my GPA is lower than 3.5 (I’m a freshman in college now with a bachelors degree) in case I don’t get a 3.5 I hope a dept for masters degree would be worth it

Great video, Shane! To add, I've never met anyone that has regretted a business degree - its versatility cannot be understated, as you can take this degree to just about any industry or vertical. I talk quite a bit about MBAs on my channel, and for those that DO regret their undergrad degree, MBAs are typically their way out in getting something valued highly in the market and advancing their career. That said, everyone will have different goals, so a top MBA that costs $200K isn't going to be right for alot of folks. Many can do just as well with a far less expensive MBA. And if there's concern that business degrees are too general, many programs offer specializations/concentrations that can differentiate it.

Journalism and Economics are two different career paths for me, they won't mix. A career in Economics is what I'm striving for, and a side job working in Journalism (such as content writing, content creation, simple things that don't take up much of time). I chose Economics for the same reason I chose Journalism, I want to work in a field that is insightful and helpful to not just myself but the community. Economics can be profitable if you're looking for a job in the right places (for me I'd want to work in the government, ie Public Sector, it pays well and I could get alot of privileges).The math isn't overly complicated if you're not an A+ math student, and if you like researching or just getting down with reading, analyzing data, and interpretation, you'll find economics to be fun, imo.

Lately, I became slightly interested in investing and the Stock market, these kind of stuff... so I found the best majors for this is Econ, Finance or Business... So when I think about it as: I will get the Bachelors degree ( To be considered educated and please my parents) in something related to Stock trading and investing, and then I will work with myself in investing or whatever.. or go to law school(have a tiny interest in it), I say that’s good...... but when I think about it as: I don’t need it, I can invest without a degree, I don’t even like studying things like statistics, and I don’t like the kind of jobs it gets me(fin.advisor, analyst,...) , it will be useless...I then feel it’s not what I want....... Another point is, idk which is better for me Finance or Econ... So because I have no better options than this path to get a degree, and classes will begin this Monday and I didn’t declare a major or chose classes yet 😰 I’m gonna choose classes that exist in both Econ and Finance programs, then I decide later which I want... ... That lead me to speech therapy and I am in a master's program now. @NeneBot-ps9qo2 жыл бұрын
@@awesome4781 Yes engineers can definitely get into med school, just make sure to get a high GPA. Engineering is pretty hard but if your able to get a high GPA in a hard major it can definitely make you look better. And in case you don't get into med school, you still have good job opportunities depending on the engineering field you go into. Just make sure you take electives cources that are prerequisites to get into med school in your engineering degree.

Ive been thinking of going into business since I was in my sophomore year but I felt like Id be looked down on bec all the people around me went into med science and engineering and very science based programs but after finding this channel Im more determined to continue in this choice, because I feel like majoring in business will both support my ideal life style and my preferred idea of financial stability , I also feel like its nice as it has more options and is more flexible and after my research I feel business has the best work/life balance in my opinion and it supports my dream to starting my own business after gaining some experience and insight on the ins and outs of business. I also love all the information shane provides and how straightforward he is, a lot of the time I find people on the internet beat around the bush for some reason but I really appreciate how straightforward shane makes the information.

Hey Shane, I just wanted to get your opinion on this. I’m 14 years old and am taking calculus and statistics next year which puts me one full year ahead of my year in maths. I’ve been watching your channel a lot recently and after seeing your video about the best double majors I really believe that I want to pursue a double major in electrical engineering and computer science so I can apply my interests in programming and computers as well as my aptitude in maths and physics to solve various problems. My question to you is do you think I should be using a fraction of the vast amount of free time I have at my disposal to teach myself some computer programming skills, such as becoming reasonably fluent in a programming language like Java or Python?
@alexgu87454 жыл бұрын
At 14 taking calc and stats. Just my unsolicited opinion. As an engineering grad student, I would say yes learn about these subjects - take one class at a time. There's not rush. From my personal experience - I met friends in my calc classes in college and we struggle together and then some went on my same engjneering field; and it was nice to know them. I guess what I'm trying to say its to enjoy every step of your life - there's not rush..these courses require a lot of work but if you're gifted then go ahead

Aerospace engineer with a master's in mechanical engineering here. Business majors have more fun and have an easier life. Everyone drops out of engineering eventually, to become doctors, start-up companies, or in my case to become a fisherman. I recommend being a plumber, electrician, carpenter, drywaller, painter, fisherman, excavator, flooring, rental property owner, contractor or start a company that actually builds things. Right now you can name your price. People I know that do this and started a company make more than the presidents of large universities. If you really like people then healthcare is a good option based on age demographics in the USA. As is starting up a nursing home/property for older people.

One of the skills of an Engineering graduate is their ability to get through that curriculum. The first few rounds of courses are "weed out" courses and require a significant time commitment and ability to stay on task and demonstrate delayed gratification. When someone says an engineering degree is just a piece of paper, I immediately question their work ethic and emotional maturity. It does teach a person those valuable skills and I know that graduate has them regardless of real-world experience.

@mattl16254 жыл бұрын
Here are my two cents from someone with a CS degree and who currently works in the software industry. I can confirm the high stress and high reward. CS degrees are worth it; you can do many things directly or indirectly related to software, mainly in IT. Around 75% of the people I have worked with through my career have had CS degrees or a degree with a CS minor, and I can confirm engineering degrees can easily transition into the software industry. Only around 5% of the people I have worked with were able to get a software job without a degree. Coding boot camps (especially alone) are not worth it and are not usually valued that high unless you have a science, math, engineering, or in some cases, an economics background. Don't get trapped by those boot camps. Study your OOP, space and time complexity, and data structures for your coding interview. You will either have 3-5 coding questions to write and explain (live) or a take-home coding project, the latter is easier. Take more project courses and fewer theory courses. Taking courses in web development, networking, and the cloud is advantageous. AI and machine learning will be the big money makers in the next 20-30 years. Python, JavaScript, and Java are the best languages to learn; Typescript and C# are pretty good, too. Learn a framework. Know basic SQL and/or NoSQL (database) fundamentals. Create a ton of projects in a Github portfolio; have fun with it. Containerization (OS-level virtualization) and cloud computing are hot now. Buy some cheap Udemy courses. Stack Overflow... learn to love it. Also, do not be surprised if the majority of your time is spent integrating or configuring software or services, system administration, architecture, unit or automated testing, DevOps, code reviews, Agile/Kanban, or reading/writing documentation, besides your coding duties.

As a machine learning engineer, I agree with many of these points. Although I would like to add that for the people who want to get into ML, keep in mind the ML field is not like other software engineering fields like web and mobile dev. Barrier to entry is especially high, everyone whom I work with either has a masters or Phd degree in computer science, math, physics, etc. and if they don't have an advance degree, they're working on one (like me, I'm currently doing a CS masters). Also ML engineers typically don't work in environments where you're given a ticket and you work on it. My work involves reading research papers, recreating experiments from those research papers, building prototypes of the algorithms in the papers (I primarily build models for anomaly detection), benchmarking ML algorithms using different models and datasets to get performance characteristics (i.e. accuracy of the model, runtime, memory usage), optimizing algorithms to reduce runtime and memory usage, and then refactoring the codebase and containerizing it into a production quality system.

@@emmy-ci5cl Depending on what you would like to do since CS is such a broad, yet, rich field. A lot of people, including myself at the beginning, thought of CS as mostly programming. I originally wanted to just become a computer technician. So in high school, I was constantly learning about computers and how to fix them, as well as how to navigate the different hardware and software aspects. I later found out that it requires a significant amount of mathematics to understand many of the topics. Programming, while a significant tool, it's just that, a tool. Mathematics and logical thinking will be some of your biggest assets (along with some grit and determination). Be ready to start learning REALLY quickly about stuff that you have never heard before. I took a class titled, "Programming languages" and I had to learn the different syntax and programming paradigms of C, C++, Lua, and Python. Where I had to learn how to quickly wield each language in about four weeks each. Along with learning about how compilers work and are able to read and identify source code to know if the code is valid or not. Among many other interesting things. That was one of the core classes, along with Data Structures and Algorithms, Operating Systems, OOP programming, Systems Programming, Assembly Language, Discrete Mathematics, and many others. Depending on the school's curriculum, they will sometimes be titled slightly different. My favorite aspect is the mathematics used and applied to the different branches of Computer Science and STEM as a whole. Making me interested in other fields and garnering healthy respect for mathematics itself. So, in short, you don't have to be to get in the classes, at first. But it's recommended to be tech-savvy or computer knowledgeable beforehand since the material piles up rapidly, especially when taking multiple different classes at once.

Should I major in Computer Science or Accounting? I've seen lots of people saying they left accounting for cs or they left cs for accounting, and both have good reasons for doing it but I am really confused. With accounting, I'll have learned a useful skill in life but people say its extremely boring and dont show how its boring so I cant really decide if its boring for me. With cs, I have no background knowledge on coding whatsoever. Its practically nonexistent. As fun as cs sounds, I dont want to live for my work. My dad has a phd in engineering and in nuclear physics. The specific thing he does there are only 3 companies you can work at in the US, but at the same time the specific type of work my dad does there are not a lot of people going for that particular work. And the kicker is it’s not high paying, but the need for What he does will always be there. He really likes what he specifically does and finding out that only a handful of people in the world can handle all the schooling for that career. To be fair his back up was Astronomy. But there was an influx of people going into that degree not realizing that it’s best to have a phd, and not many end up actually completing the bachelor before going another route. Only a few get the phd. Which sucks because all those people that just dropped out, could of given him a spot. Bottom line just because you can buy a keyboard, turntables, pro tools, mixer, studio speakers, and a microphone doesn’t mean you should. Just because you can afford the equipment doesn’t doesn’t mean you are a do. You need to have knowledge of music theory, composition, tempo. That’s like someone going and buying a violin and that making you a violinist.

Whatever degree you get, just don't get old. The business majors don't like paying your high salary and do everything they can to get rid of you.

Can you please do a video on the supply chain management business major / specialization? The numbers on it are really good but it’s not a very common / popular degree for some reason. Would love to see a video diving into it. Thanks!
