Belts are amazing beginner projects as they can be as simple or as detailed as you want to make it. I've been wearing my first belt for well over 2 years now and it's still going strong, but with the knowledge I've gained in that time, I'm starting work on my second!

This is so useful. I sell clothing online. The reason why it is hard to tell what exact size belt we need is because each pair of pants will fit differently: Depending on the measurement of the rise of the pants they will sit on a different height of out waist. Therefore, the belt will need to adjust to each pair of our pants:o)

We bought our house from the neighbor, it was his family home. They were dairy farmers and we bought the last few acres of his family farm. I made him a belt with the house and barn on it, finished in a basketweave on the remainder. He told me what size he needed....should have measured! But better too long than too short, I had to cut some off but it would have saved hours of tooling with the correct measurement. He died several years later, they buried him with it. Not sure how I feel about that!

I was always told you measure from the inside of the buckle where the prong lays against the buckle. Is this wrong? I have customers that wear trophy buckles that are 2”-2 1/4” from the heel bar to the prong. Am I measuring wrong?

A couple questions: Does the weight of the leather change the sizing? That is, do you need to go with a longer belt when using 8 or 9 oz leather? Also, when looking at belt blanks on the Weaver Leather website, it gives a range of weights. I assume the leather isn't uniform along the entire length of the belt blank or the side. Does any of that need to be taken into account? Thanks for the video.

Many straps sold as Belt Blanks will be 'leveled' for uniform *maximum* thickness, and variation could be found where it thins just a little. "Pre-finished" belt blanks are often leveled and the backs are plated ...and it looks like they've been through a roller to *really* make them consistent. However, a variation of 1 oz will hardly be noticeable because "1 oz" is only 1/64th of an inch. This is where buying "belt blanks" differs from buying 'strap' --- the strap may or may not be leveled, and the variation in thickness might be an issue.

Hi there, Going up an once or two will change the length but not by much. It’s so little I don’t really account for it. I may add ½” if I’m going with a 10/11 oz. or heavier. The varying weight isn’t a real issue. Usually an 8/9 oz. hide will be 9 oz. on one end and 8 on the other so it’s pretty insignificant.

Chuck...I have a cheap walmart all leather (100% cowhide made in India-no joke...lol) belt I bought several years ago. It's about 2" wide and has curled or warped in the middle or the middle of my back. How can I get the leather to flatten out. It's not hurting to wear it but just doesn't look nice. Thanks, George

Just made a belt for a good friend who is suffering severely with his health. His waist size goes from 45 inches to 32 inches literally overnight as he has up to 20 kg of fluid drained from his body in hospital. A month later he can be back up to 45 inches as he can put a kilo of weight on per day ( fluid). Sadly, it's going to be the last belt he wears.
