How to match two pre-cut pieces together perfectly: 1. Put the two pieces together without any adhesive and line them up. 2. Get some low tac / temporary tape (like masking tape?) and wrap a few pieces around one of the edges, creating a sort of hinge. 3. Unfold the pieces and apply contact cement. 4. Once the cement is dry, slowly fold the pieces and stick them together starting with the edge closest to the hinge. Et voila! No repositioning or trimming required! :)

Hi Mark, Glad to hear you're enjoying leather crafting! In most of our project videos, I'll show how to make the pattern in the beginning of the video and that's really how I do it from scratch. I do recommend starting with just plain copy paper until the pattern is perfected and then transferring to pattern paper or card stock. Enjoy the tutorials on the leather craft, although with the glue I have a product called shoo glue, use it for aligning seams when making clothes, then saddle stitch the seams, both sides of the join, tedious but worth the look in the end.

Hi Julio, We'll link a video below that Chuck did on chisels, thread and needles. In the video, you can see what the stitches look like for both straight and diamond chisels. It's mostly up to peronal preference which one you use, the straight chisel will give you a straight stitch line and the diamond will give you a little bit of a slanted stitch line. I like those little glue tools that look like dab tools but better and sharper for small areas that need to be exact with contact cement. Those little tools make it easy when you need to be exact with a small amount of barge

I got some cheap washcloths from the dollar store for spreading glue. I wrap the washcloth around my finger and dip it into the can of glue and spread it on the leather. Works the glue into the fibers of the leather nicely as well.

Use wood weld contact cement - they have a water based version which is good. The solvent based one is even better. And it’s cheap!

Great video! Very informative... I use a lot of capes that I tan myself... including bird capes with a lot of oil / fat and I oil tan . I normally just want to put felt on back . Will contact cement be best or rubber cement?

Great help there Chuck. I have a problem where I tried to make a strap using pull up veg tan leather for front and back. I used a contact glue on each piece. But the glue never seemed to dry 100%!!?? Even when the pieces were put together. Even after a few days I was able to separate the front and back pieces. Any idea what I might have done wrong? Thanks in advance :-)

A thin coat of petroleum jelly on the threads will keep the cap from becoming stuck on the can. Either the can threads or the cap threads. Makes it really easy to open later.

Good tips. It’s hard for me to keep from getting glue on the show side. Usually when the piece is moving around while I’m glueing it up. l’ll get it on my fingers and it goes all over the place from there.

Hey Chuck! Love the channel, love your energy, don't change a thing! Question for ya: I'm kinda new to leather craft, haven't done in earnest since I was in the scouts decades ago. I only just started back up to make sheaths for knives of a very particular style but I'm seeing the potential to take it a bit farther and learning a lot here. I've tried a straight BLO finish to good effect but now wonder if it would work as well over dye? A friend recently gifted me a bunch of Fiebings Leather Dye so now I have a bunch if colors I'd love to try out.

Hi David, Thank you so much, so glad you like the videos! I would maybe test a piece of scrap leather with the dye and finish and see how it works. I would recommend using a leather finish of some sort just because its made specifically for that purpose, I like the Fiebing's Leather Balm or Fiebings Saddle-Lac myself.

@@WeaverLeatherSupply Thanks for getting back to me. That's pretty much what I wound up doing. I put some of the intended dye Ina piece of scrap the applied BLO over it. Several coats later, it didn't harm the dye at all, no running, rub-off or scaling like I had feared, but it made no appreciable difference either. I guess it's as you say, it's just not the material for the application and a proper top coat is the way to go. Thanks again.

I know you have to be careful about drying out your contact cement and I’ve heard you advise to add a little thinner each time you open the can. My question is, does light affect the glue? What about storing it in a clear jar? Also, how long can you reasonably expect glue to last siting in the original can? Thanks in advance.

Hi there, if the bottle is closed tightly the cement should be ok for several months before you have to thin it. You'll be able to tell once it doesn't apply in a nice, thin layer. Light shouldn't affect it nor the color of the jar - you just want to ensure it's in an airtight container. Hope that helps!

On Don Gonzales’s you tube site does saddles and will always coat his saddles and belts with two coats of barge cement. If he is going to wet form leather on a saddle he will put three coats on till dry and then apply a very light wet coat. the Wet coat allows him to move the leather slightly. Do you do anything like this?

OLD LEATHER SMITH here, I have used this idea 4 over 20 years CHUCK, 20oz water bottle, wool scrap, drill 1/8 or smaller hole in cap, fill with contact cement wool scrap used 2 close hole in cap, U can cover small or large with ease, glue doesn't get thick cap spreads glue FAST. GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾🙃

@jimathey6153, i'm dense on this Jim or there's info missing. it sortuv looks like the glue goe in the water bottle - stainless or plastic? where does what size wool scrap go? since u can cover large areas, it seem it goes on the outside of the cap as a spreader, like the Absorbine Jr used 2 have, but what prevents it from drying out in half an hr? orz the wool inside the bottle? puzzld, :o)))

Complete newb here: for contact cement, does it matter what sides of the leather you put it on? Heard somewhere you should only put it on the flesh side so it absorbs into the fibers better, but so far when it comes to leather, I only trust Chuck. Umm, i sometimes use it on the grain side, and just like what chuck does, i roughen the grain side then apply the cement, works well

Best advice to everyone even the veterans of the trade. Stop using excess leather and items that you just. Don't. Need. Stop for a moment and examine your project. Take an hour to assess your measurements. In fact. Take a few hours over a few days if need beb and just stop thinking to deep about it if you are not certain. Once you figure out that you don't need all those strap. Rivets. Buttons and whatever else that a simple stitch will suffice to last your item years and years. You got it in the bag!

Hi Chuck.. loving your videos, great information really well explained for a beginner like me .. I've looked at your videos on dyeing leather and I've a question - what's the difference between the oil based dyes and water based dyes? My local leather store recommended the Eco Flo range as something good for a beginner and it worked well on my first project. I'm now looking at getting additional colours and I'm going to try my hand at some leather carving soon so would be hoping to do some antiquing too.. I see you always use the oil-based dyes and get great results. So before I buy more dye and antique could you perhaps do a pros and cons of oil versus water based? All the best from Phil in Ireland

Hi Phil, I like the Pro Dye because it gives me the best and most uniform coverage and it has minimal rub off. The main difference is that the Pro Dye has an oil based dye stuff. I am looking into some water based options but I've not done enough experimenting to feel comfortable doing a pros and cons video yet. I'll keep at it though!

Hi there, Most pre-dyed veg tan can be stamped, but not tooled. We'll link our rifle sling video below where we stamped an English Bridle Leather. I have been making fly swatters with leather paddles. I made a batch sewing two pieces of leather together so i could attach a handle between them. It worked but it was very difficult to sew, even with my wife’s super heavy duty sail rite machine (for sewing sails for boats). I am going to try to glue the next batch together but am worried that the glue may make them stiff when they need to be flexible like when they were sewn. Will gluing work? Do you have any suggestions? Any help will be appreciated.

I've used DAP (Weldwood) neoprene rubber cement for glueing in welts for knife sheaths. The problem was that when burnishing the weld edge, the rubber cement between the layers also rubbed and smeared over the finished edge making it sticky and unsightly. I had to rub the edge with a soft cloth and a bit of mineral oil to take it off. Does the the BARGE or S-18 cement do the same thing?

Hi Robert, You shouldn't have this issue with Barge or S-18 - just make sure the glue is in a thin layer. If it's on too thick, it will get gummy. You can always thin the glue with glue thinner if it's getting too thick.

I’m a little late to the party, but next time on those little pockets where the Qtip didn’t work, next time try either a tooth pick (wooden) or maybe chopsticks or a popsicle stick. I don’t know, it just sounds like something that can hold the glue, not make a mess, and be small/thin enough to reach those places. Unless, you figured out another way that’s easier I would love to know because I’m dealing with the issues of the pockets.

not a bad idea using the paint roller, however having been raised by a contractor, I would use a thinner "nap" for the roller thickness. otherwise you use a lot more material (glue) than you need to

How much clearance or extra length and width and height do you recommend for the pattern greater than the size of the given tin? You put the leather over it dry like you was forming it but keep about an inch and a half extra. It will give you plenty of extra. Then wet form dry and trim.

I used fiebings glue to glue the fibrous side to a paint mixer and make a strop. I imagine all three of these glues will work to glue two wrong sides together. If the glue doesn’t stick, try slicking the fibrous side before glueing to make a flattened surface.

If I had to hazard a guess, unless the glue is water soluble then no---you'd probably end up spending more on cleaning fluids than you would the paint roller?

Yes, suede is a great liner option! You should get a good strong bond if you glue suede on to the flesh side of leather.

I do have a question in regards to the interaction between leather paints and sealants. I'm making a hat and plan on painting on it using a vinyl stencil, but im unsure weather i should paint before or after i use atom wax. The hat is dyed black and the paint i plan on using is white.

You have to paint before you apply your wax if not the paint won't stick. It repels everything including paints. I've made the mistake of trying to paint afterwards and it didn't work out.
