Back by popular demand, Chuck has some more shop tricks to share! In this video, he shows some tips for forming belt loops, how to deal with a miscalculation, and being short on thread when hand stitching, and how to measure for a custom belt. I think during one of the live chats, someone mentioned visiting the dumpster of a kitchen counter shop. One person even got a piece of discarded headstone marble. 🤣 Add a dollar store kitchen cutting board and you're good for all your punching needs.

your methode with the sizing belt is verry useful, and i preder to use a thin and strong cheat of metal when sewing leather by hand to not let the leather weaving left an right.

I see a new book out that shows pictures of it happening, but trying to use a French beveler for the 45 degree smooth edge is murder... let alone sewing the thing up properly. There's a challenge. hello chuck i love your vids they are very helpfull i have a question about on of my projects. im making a cape out of soft leather but the inside (hairy side of the leather) off the cape leaves a lot of flakes on your clothes. is there something i can do about that? i know i can line the inside with some other leather but i dont have enough and buying leather in holland is a nightmare cause we dont have any good stores to buy leather. i get it ones or twice a year at a fantasy fair i would love to hear from you. thanks in advance

Hi there, You can slick the fuzzy side of the leather by using something like Tokonole or Gum Tragacanth and a glass slicker or bone folder. Just apply some of the edge finish of your choice and slick the leather, this will smooth down the rough side and should eliminate the flakes. Hope that helps!

I'm just getting started with leatherworking as a retirement hobby. I have limited finances to get started. I'll be ordering your excellent beginner's kit, and want to get a bevel cutting tool. What size will be the most useful for general projects? I would get the multiple tip kit, but would have to wait a month. I want it now, so what do you recommend? Practice. I have 3 tools and they never work like the experts on the videos. Learn how to sharpen them also. Out of the box is not sufficient.

Could you do a leather element in the different cuts off leather? (I.e. shoulder belly, etc) and what their approx. Dimensions are and what they are good for in terms of projects? I really want to get into leather work but don't have a large budget, looking for best bang to buck ratio.

Nevermind. I just realized that the conversion kit is to cut in 16th inch increments, not to cut a wider strip of leather. Duh!

Hi Alexander, Yes, typically boot laces are 1/8" and you can cut that width on this tool.

Hi Chuck, OLD LEATHER SMITH here, I have been doing Leather 4 a little over 40 years and found out in my early years not 2 tie knots, just back stitch 2 to 3 stitches, also the lace maker works great 2, I will have 2 show my students about keeper maker and use 4 belt ends 2, GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾🙃

Chuck, love the video as usual. But what watch do you wear? Looks like a rugged one, easy to read, but attractive as well, & maybe has some functions especially useful for leathercraft? You tell me :). Also, what kinds of leathers and weights, at least approximately, can you use the lace cutter for? Could be useful for other things as well.

Hi Bob! Thanks so much for watching! The watch is a Casio MRW 200H. You can use the Lace Cutter for multiple weights but keep in mind the amount of leather you’re cutting. For example, a 4/5 oz. 2 “ wide with a ¼“ lace width isn’t bad but an 8/9 oz. 2” with an 1/8” lace width is going to be tough. With new blades the 8/9 oz. at ¼” isn’t too bad but it takes some force to get it through (I tried 2”of a 9/10 oz. with an 1/8” lace width one time and I didn’t pull the leather through the Lace Cutter, I pulled the whole table towards me! Quite comical!). Sharp blades are the key but the blades are quite durable, sharp, easy to replace and pretty inexpensive, but, the best thing is to pull thinner strap widths (not lace widths) through with higher weights.
