Written by Judee Sill prior to her signing with Asylum Records. Sill met John Beck of The Leaves in 1966 via her then husband Bob Harris and played him "Dead Time Bummer Blues", a song she had written while awaiting trial. Beck took the song to fellow band mate Jim Pons who was equally impressed and they decided to record the song with the help of Bob Harris (piano) and legendary jazz drummer Eddy Rubin. Pons & Beck would continue to champion Sill, with Pons securing her a songwriting deal with The Turtles' publishing company "Blimp" which resulted in a single for them, "Lady O". Both Pons & Beck would co-produce Judee's self-titled debut album for Asylum Records.
