On April 27, 2017 Anita Sarkeesian of Feminist Frequency released her final video in her Tropes vs. Women series. Now that Ms. Sarkeesian has moved on to a new venture, this is a good time to contextualize how her series fits into the historical picture of media criticism.
It is time to look at the impact of Anita’s work as it relates to art, entertainment, and society.
It’s time to look at the LEGACY OF TROPES VS. WOMEN.
Music clips:
"You're So Vain" - Carly Simon
"Oogie Boogie's Song" - Nightmare Before Christmas
"Stranger Things Theme" - Stranger Things
"We're not Gonna Take it" - Twisted Sister
"Toccata" - Bach
"Evil Incarnate" - Doom Soundtrack
"Witch Hunt" - RUSH

The result of my copyright dispute is that my video can stand as it is but it can not be monetized. If you weren't able to see the video before, hopefully you can see it now. I'm more interested in getting these ideas out there than in making money, so I'm OK with that. Nevertheless, I'll be more careful with my use of music in the future. Lesson learned!

I don't know who you're partnered with (if anyone outside of Google), but Curse allows me (with a 90/10 split and relevant ads) to freely use a website called epidemicsound.com. I don't want to sound like an ad or bot but they're fantastic, allowing me to use royalty free music AND good sound effects, even able to use specific components such as the bass line or guitar line. You still can't freely use ANY song like these copyrighted and popular songs in this video, but I think you may be surprised to find the quality you CAN get out of a service like that without any fear of copyright claims or strikes.

You remember those authoritarian nations that executed all dissenters (some of which exist even today)? She's similiar to that, unwelcoming of all criticism, negative or constructive, but all she can do with her meagre 'authority' unlike those nations, is call people names and make a room full of people laugh at the dissenters. Real classy. SJW's are supposed to protect free speech right? It seems not asking as it suits their side of the narrative.

I'm a woman and I've been playing video games since I was a kid. My older brothers got me into SNES, PlayStation, and Nintendo 64. I've never felt "discriminated" against by fellow gamers. Only *trolls* who like to talk crap to *everyone* no matter your gender or race or whatever else. In fact, I've made good friends because of gaming, and I've bonded with my brothers and with friends through gaming. I felt the need to type this comment to say, Anita does not speak for me. I'd go as far as to say Anita doesn't speak for most of us (female gamers). I'd bet you a vintage Nintendo 64 system that Anita never played video games before she decided to attack the gaming industry/male gamers.

The Ranger - I don't understand it either... they must have gold medals in mental gymnastics. Anita also says video games are sexist because sometimes they portray women with big breasts/big butts or other "unrealistic body standards" (more feminist buzzwords) ... First off, some women like seeing that. Second, video games also portray men with 6 pack abs or huge muscles in general, but I don't hear any feminists complaining about that. I don't care either way but that's a huge double standard.

Please Clap I can perfectly understand your position I've gotten my mom and my sister into video games we all play games together my mom sometimes asks me for help when she enters a tough area in Dark Souls and I help her out my sister even comes to me and asked how do I get a certain material in Kingdom Hearts 2 (her favorite game) I help her out to. see video gamers are not excluding women it's just a small minority feels left out. These feminists are just really jealous that men enjoy video games more than women so they believe if they destroy video games they will destroy the man. I'm saying girls can play video games just as well as men but I hate it how Anita sarkeesian has been one-sided.
@Juichi
@Juichi 7 жыл бұрын
I'm also a woman who has played games her whole life. I have felt discrimination, but I have also had preferential treatment. You get the guys that don't believe you play games, the ones that automatically assume you are terrible at games and the ones that don't want to acknowledge that you like games. On the other end you get the guys that go out of their way to know you because you like games. Sometimes this is nice, but other times it's because they only want to get with you or they don't take your interest serious. I have also dealt with the women who don't understand games and the negative treatment I've seen from them. Then you have the trolls or trash talkers, but those affect everyone. Also, sometimes games have made me feel uncomfortable or made me feel left out by the lack of female characters or the over-sexualization of female characters. In more recent years it has been a lot better than it was in the 90s. I don't think that all games need to have a huge variety nor should it be forced into a game. There will always be games targeted to a certain gender or is a specific type of game that doesn't need to change. I support some of the things of what Anita says, but overall I feel that she is a fraud. What she has done has been a detriment to the women like me who want to see more variety in games. She rarely acknowledges other sides of the arguments and refuses to have a real conversation on the topic. She shuts other people out so that only her views can be heard and no one can challenge her.

Billy Overton but she wants those things in her cirques to be changed and altered because she believes they are innately sexist.. she takes things way out of context and nitpicks and exaggerates things for her own ends, just to play into her argument.. all this to imply gamers and game developers are sexist, when the gaming community as I have experienced it is a very open, tolerant and egalitarian group, with huge amounts of women in it that just don't see things the way she does.. she even clearly has stated she didn't start this journey as a gamer and she was very much going into it as a woman on a mission to prove something. you don't have to call a ban on something to want it cencored.. like a film full of explicit material or a piece of music that has lots of swear words, you can cut things out of it to censor it while keeping the rest, but ultimately this only leads to a control of expression that can compromise a creative vision that didn't hurt anyone.. the gaming community is attacked by aggressive liberals and hardline conservatives alike for its content, acting like it corrupts the youth to do awful things when there's never been any credible proof to back such claims, with the vast majority of gamers being above 18.
@wgo523
@wgo523 7 жыл бұрын
"but she wants those things in her cirques to be changed and altered because she believes they are innately sexist.." whats wrong with that? she could be wrong, but she gives decent enough reasons for why she sees them as negative tropes. this is a GOOD thing, more people should spend time critiquing the status quo. Even if you enjoy it! "all this to imply gamers and game developers are sexist, when the gaming community as I have experienced it is a very open, tolerant and egalitarian group, with huge amounts of women in it that just don't see things the way she does.." hmmm. but the character of individuals is not the target of her criticism, and while maybe anita hasn't been nice to her own critics (can you blame her tho?), good people making games does not invalidate her criticism, or make it pointless. even if anita is close to the worst caricatures of her, her criticism is pretty innocuous. "with huge amounts of women in it that just don't see things the way she does.." This is definitely true. And I'm not saying every argument Anita made is perfect. But the work of criticism is NOT A THREAT to a medium, and is you examine the history of literature and film, cultural criticism of media is VITAL to its health. I really think the hysteria over one feminist making some critical videos being viewed by some gamers as an assault on their identity reveals an immaturity in gaming culture. I do think the blowback to conservatives being hysterical over "games make you violent" has contributed to gamers being hostile to any sort of criticism of their medium. But media DOES shape people and culture. And its a medium dominated by pretty juvenile ideas, a lot of the time.

@Marilyn Newman Right? Like I am not Christian but I was raised Christian and one of the least ambiguous lines is the bit about "No man may know the hour or day of his return" or some such. Yet I keep hearing about people "predicting" when it will be. It literally goes against the words you CLAIM to believe in. My dad always watched this program, I can't remember the name, but it always ended with "We are entering The End of Days" and did so FOR YEARS! In fact, if they do believe the Bible than anyone saying when it will be has now removed it from the possibility of being that day. They made the J-man reschedule his comeback tour. Moral guardians ruin even things they like! but yeah in a couple of decades once VR has become affordable and more widespread, someone will rise with "studies" about how VR will ruin everything. and I am not even talking about Sci-Fi future full sensory VR I am talking about the headsets we have now.

Heh, the so-called "Jehovas Witnesses" has been yelling "Wake up!" for at least decades, yet they are mostly still asleep like the rest of us. Just try to be as decent as you can in general, and you might just be ok. We probably are indeed in "the end of days", except it is not any literal end of days .... and as for post-apocalyptic imagery, just remember that "Apocalypse" originally meant "Revelations" .... ^_^

Not in my view. A balanced perspective would say "Western Civilization is doing pretty good at the moment, war's mostly won there. Now the middle east and Africa on the other hand? That needs some work." We need to remember that at one point, things were bad here, compared to now. It's simply too bad that some individuals and groups can't acknowledge a victory and move to new battlefields, instead trying to somehow win beyond 100%.

Anita loves to make gnostic-sounding, faux-profound and groundless claims with absolutely no indication of how she knows these things. My favourite is basically, that the less likely you think you are to act out game violence in real life, the more likely you are to do so. So, basically, only if you absolutely _know with certitude_ that you _will_ act out video game violence can you be sure you _won't._ And that's gibberish. It's a shallow soundbite with no academic citations, but with a paper-thin thin veneer of platitudinous plausibility.

Yet again, it has to be pointed out: not everyone who talks about Sarkeesian or her ideas is a harasser. You can't just shove every one disputing your claims into that category as if there is no such thing as a legitamate critic.

I was a donor to Tropes vs Women before I knew much about Anita. Then GamerGate hit, and I realized I was wrong and knew I'd never see my donation produce any videos because Anita was too busy crying about "muh harassment." As a donor to her Kickstarter, I tweeted her and asked if we would ever see those videos. I wasn't rude, but I wanted what I paid for, even if, by that point, I disagreed with her. She blocked me. To see her "whatever, dude" Sargon isn't surprising when she calls any form of criticism "harassment." Her ideas don't stand up to scrutiny, so she can't discuss them with someone who has two brain cells to rub together. She couldn't talk her way out of a paper bag. If Sargon (and I don't care for him) makes videos saying the same old shit, what does that mean about Anita who does the same herself? Anita, you need to get out of your safe space, put on your big girl panties, and grow up.

Hands down one of THE BEST videos roughly documenting Anita's history and her place among others like her. Informative, somewhat biased but with solid backing, and worth watching in my honest opinion for everyone. And we must reiterate, we don't dislike or hate Anita for being a woman, but because what she is doing isn't right, she doesn't honestly believe in what she is doing, and she is playing the professional victim to earn a paycheck.

This kind of thing is why journalism is dead. "Who is stalking your children for Satan?" The first question you should be asking isn't how many communists are in the White House, but *ARE THERE.* "Does Satan exist?" is the first question that should be asked, and until he can show up in court and testify on his own behalf anyone reasonable would opt out. So no, Crazy Cat Lady Pulling, your kid didn't off himself because of a game. I might suggest that his nutbar mom might've driven him to it if I wanted to be unkind, though. "Does D&D induct people into witchcraft or the occult?" Any journalist worthy of the title would have gotten one of the D&D books and looked at the rules. Roll dice. Check number against other number. Decide outcome. WOW SUCH AN INCREDIBLE MAGIC SPELL THIS DEFINITELY IS GOING TO DEMONIFY MY POKEYMANS! I know, I know, "it was a different time". It's really not, though; we still have witch hunts today. They're just called Gamergaters or misogynists or MRAs instead. We need journalists. We need people to stop being so blind stupid. We need people who can _think_ for half a freaking second before buying whatever some loudmouth is selling. Thanks for doing these kinds of videos, Mr. Leavitt.

Her brand of censorship is the most insidious, she wants to establish a moral code of her own virtues, and impress it onto game developers through self censorship, you've probably seen countless instances of these very same people attacking devs and forcing them to change aspects of games in development.
@openSUSE5
@openSUSE5 7 жыл бұрын
I guess the good thing is that with no legal repercussions for creating "sexist" content, a capitalist economic system, and a market demand for the things she complains against, there's no way the self-censorship would last more than a few years at best. It's still astounding the impact these handful of perpetually outraged morons can have, however.

TheControlBlue it's what happened during the McCarthy era in Hollywood the people that started the studios in the first place were Jewish and they made the best movies of all time and guess what anti-semites weeded out all the Jews and now today Hollywood is a shell of what it was 80 years ago. The Jews made the Hollywood film industry they were discriminated against in the early 1900s and couldn't get a job so they decided to make movies and they were forced to move to California because of Thomas Edison and they made the classic Studio as we all know in love today. 20th Century Fox, Universal Studios, Warner Brothers, MGM. all these companies were founded by Jewish people and they were the first to see what Hitler was before World War II happened. but they were told to keep quiet by Joseph Kennedy and other anti-semites and when the McCarthy era came it was the anti-semites opportunity to weed out the Jews that started the studios in the first place. But today we have something the Jews of Hollywood didn't have social media. Dr. Wortham would have failed Because if there was social media he would have failed to if social media existed during mrs. Gore's anti time music thing I think it would have gone more in the music bands favor instead of her. Thanks to social media we have a defense against lies.

Did you get a new mic? You sound different. :-) That said, I rarely experience watching anything about Anita and feel like I heard something new or gave me something to think about. This video did. The way you present her predecessors short and clear in advance, and then not only debunking her defenders, but at the same time pointing out that she are even less qualified, than the people before her, makes it so even though nothing new is presented to me, I see the larger picture and notice details I hadn't noticed before. And it's good to see you are improving your video making skills :-) Although, thanks to you, I will never be able to enjoy rogue legacy ever again. :-p And also, thanks for still speaking up. I know it's not the safest carree choice. As lifelong gamer it's comforting to hear this stuff from a 'real' game dev. It gives hope, that one day I will be able to sit down, relax and play a game again, without getting pulled back to reality thanks to some forcefed idendity politics. Again, Thank you very much.

Some of these are negative towards women and some are negative towards men. She's a hypocrite.

I'm pretty sure the parental advisory label has the opposite of the intended effect. Teenagers are usually looking to rebel and find their own identity. When I was a teenager if a cd had a parental advisory label on it, it gave it an extra appeal of being taboo, forbidden, rebellious etc. There are numerous examples of policies, doctrines etc where policies are put in place which have the opposite of the intended effect because they come at it from a dogmatic angle instead of understanding the psychology of people and what influences people to make the choices that they make.
