Dear Ms. Sarkeesian,
I’ve been making video games professionally for over 20 years. In that span, I’ve worked on over two-dozen different game titles. Most recently, I was a Game Director as part of the Billion Dollar Disney Infinity franchise for four different playsets.
In the wake of the cancellation of Disney Infinity, I’ve been enjoying a bit of a sabbatical where I am free to speak my mind about various video game related topics. One of those topics is sexism in video games. And, of course, thanks to your visibility and your Tropes vs. Women KZbin series, your name comes up frequently. Because most of the titles I’ve worked on have been family friendly, you haven’t had anything to say about them and so I have no personal axe to grind with you.
However, as I’ve engaged with the community on the sexism in games topic, I’ve noticed something interesting. Although you’ve been generally well-received by the mainstream press, the majority of both gamers and game developers, like myself, tend to view your representations of the games you’ve discussed as being very skewed. And, hence, we’ve tended to regard your consequent criticisms anywhere from suspicious to being outright false.
I think this is something of a shame because, as a commercial art form that has now eclipsed all others in terms of reach and worldwide sales, video games are a worthy subject for criticism. A genuine, insightful, and well-informed feminist perspective on games and the gaming industry would be welcome.
Unfortunately, Anita, your approach appears to be alienating the preponderance of those who should be the most interested in what you have to say: the gaming community itself. Rather than seeing you as an insider, who is seeking to provide valuable insights to improve and educate the community, we tend to see you as an outsider who is deliberately misrepresenting things in the interests of self-promotion and profit.

Thierry Williamson Gaming has been a great escape to me in the past. I'm sad to see how people think of it as some vile cesspool. People don't understand why the backlash has occurred towards them when they buy into the lies being told... But it's sort of obvious. It would be like me showing up in force to a womans convention and demanding they change their platform by spewing lies and slanted statistics. It would apall the insiders of said platform that people are listening to me and judging them for it. They would resist, arguments and fights ensue etc... People who bring politics into this stuff don't understand we play it to escape that shit and now it's been tainted and developers are caving to it. Seems a lot of people have issues with reading what isn't there. I never said I came to my conclusion from watching her video series. I said I realize she was a liar from the University video of her saying she wasn't a fan of games and turn around in her Kickstarter claiming it was a hobby she loved. Thank God...an open and honest letter to Aniita from someone inside the industry that doesn't hide behind a pseudonym. My favorite games are all racing games, simulators (Pilotwings fanatic), and a select few RPGs. I'm not big on the entire FPS and GTA segment of gaming; not because I'm disgusted by the violence, but because they simply are not my cup of tea. That doesn't mean I go on a tirade about games I don't like, I just focus on the ones myself and my friends are into. Anita is definitely the outsider, a self-admitted liar re: her gaming background, and has stolen people's money from her "Tropes" videos that gained so much crowd-funding. What happened to the money Anita? What happened?

Troy, I agree with what you're trying to do here, as well as your pinned comment about how unlikely it is that Anita will respond to your open letter. If you are willing to confront her on these issues, I think that the only way the air is going to be cleared on the matter is that instead of approaching Anita, approach the mainstream media that continues to give her a platform to speak on. While we as the gaming community continue to dislike Anitas views, there needs to be opposition shown in the areas where her voice is heard, because to us, she's not looking for a forum to share her views, but a soapbox, where she can rant unopposed. It might almost sound underhanded, but I believe Anita's been given plenty of opportunity to keep a level playing field, but given she hasn't done so, I think the playing field needs to be leveled out for her.

Excellent video! I wanted everyone to know that as a woman that has been gaming since I was 4 years old (currently 27)... I would like to mention I've never noticed anything sexist or racist in like 99.9% of the games I've ever played. If there were any essenses of it, it was to attract to specific demographics of gamers. Hell I find it funny that when there is a female tank in some MMORPG, she sometimes haa 2 thimbles to protect her chest and a piece of yarn on her crotch while her male counterpart is basically a walking piece of iron. Both have the same stats. What does it say about the man? He's clearly weaker compared to her all powerful thimbles. I actually feel that its empowering to women to need less armor. My favorite arguments by Anita was about the GTA strip clubs. Basically she wanted personality from NPC strippers... She does know what an NPC and a stripper is... right?
