Thanks for making this. It's excellent. I the same way about most of what you said in the video. I really like the first Joan of Arc album but after that I loose interest. I think the American Football album is a fantastic piece of art, but I find myself listening to Cap'n Jazz much more often just because I feel that they resonate with my feelings more. I hope to see more of these.

"and you are coldorondness coudeverbe and you are buzzi than buzzinbuu " - Cap'n Jazz "Oh Messy Life"
That's one of my favorite Cap'N Jazz songs. Almost yelling about his boldly bald cousin Bucky so frantically feels like he is really making a statement that he is quite passionate about. I love Cap'N Jazz!
youtube knows i love cap'n jazz lol, i was so stoked to see this in my recommended. i love this band

my old punk band back in the 90's used our bassist's father's machine tool shop as a practice space. it was hot and sweaty and we spent our spare time skating, digging half-smoked cigarettes out of his dad's ashtray, and getting a lot of free food from the Burger King across the highway. and driving around listening to a lot of music from The Get Up Kids to Sublime to NoFX. oh man i'm about to tear up thinking about how awesome of times we had. i'm 40 now, i've been married and divorced, i beat heroin addiciton 11 years ago. i still struggle with alcohol but i have a better handle on it than i ever have since i took my frist drink. thank you so much for making this incredible synopsis on Cap'N Jazz and all the offshoots there of. Excellent video! 👏

See my whole Interpretation of cap’n Jazz is, you don’t have to have emotional lyric to make an emotional song. Like if you right something sad that doesn’t mean your song has to be sad, you could make it feel more up Lifting or inspiring. It boils down to the emotion that the band puts into the song that matters and truely creates the emotion. I hope I don’t sound stupid. I just wanted to share my thoughts on this band!

made sense to me! i recorded a lot of down-tempo electronica (mostly using a Fender Rhodes piano, an Alesis Micron synth, and vox) back in the day. It was twinkly, it was pretty, it was devastatingly depressing, and it was also hopeful at the same time. Most of it was all written about the same two women. I go back and listen to those 20+ years old songs to this day and they still hit me hard. probably harder than they would ever hit anyone else but i bet anyone would be able to relate to it in their own life experiences. some of the lyrics were written directly thru a ouija board. weird stuff. i've always loved weirdass music, though. i don't mess around with the occult anymore and have actually come back to Christ after decades of dabbling in that stuff, using tons of drugs (the fun types like LSD and the not fun types like meth and heroin) and all of it, plus all the bands listed in this video and all of my life experiences up to my current 40 years, has made me who i am today. and i actually like who i am, these days. i finally learned how to like myself when i was around 35 years old. OH MESSY LIFE, my dude.

My life changed for the better in 2012 when a dude I played an online game with showed me "It's All About Right Then" by Ghosts and Vodka. That sent me down a rabbit hole to discover all of the bands mentioned in this video and other similar artists. That first Owls album will always be one of my favorites.

what games do you play? i'm always lookin for people to game with. as i've gotten older, i play a lot more RPG's and less first-person shooters (though i still play the hell out of the entire DOOM franchise and Wolfenstein, too). i find myself doing a lot of Stardew Valley and similar games, these days. anyhoo, if you ever want to play some Stardew or anything else for that matter, get at me!

there seems to be some confusion about Little League. there are two vocal lines. Tim sings "thin kids get a skinny neck hex" while Anja Westerweck gets a guest credit on the song for simultaneously singing "kitty kitty cat, kitty kitty cat." Tim's following line is "heads hang happy" except for the last time where he sings, rather quietly, "I'm feelin heavy"

This is really good, I like the description you gave about the lyrics not necessarily making sense, but still evoking some sort of feeling in the listener. I never knew how to describe it but I always felt the same way.

Don't know how I haven't come across this until now, but I'm glad I did. This is great. Owls is easily my favorite band in this corner of music, if not my favorite band overall. I really appreciate your readings of the lyrics. Gives me good reason to reapproach the songs and think about them in a different way.

Thank you for this. You articulate what i want to say so well. I think the reason i love emo as a whole so much is because of the ability it has to connect with "the quiet things that no one ever knows" (haha brand new) and that part is often overlooked in the mainstream or public perception of emo, I think above all emo trys to be authentic and human yet in the same vein that constant honesty can be quite draining if there is not an introspective attempt at working through the emotion? with growth and i think thats what sets tim kinsella apart

Joan of Arc was an amazing band at the time. I can see listeners that didn't grow up pre internet they wouldn't grasp some of the artsy stuff. The Gap and Live in Chicago are classics.

I subbed after a stupid joke about me watching a video about 'emo shit'. So true. Me loosing viriginity was a lot worse than what was described, but this guy knows something about the rest of you all. That joke was so insensitive, like only a good friend could pull it off, yet he did it in a video. This desereves a sub.

Cap n Jazz captures the essence of teenage frustration and playfulness. Its almost like the whole band is a kid trying to express itself but dont know how. Its clumpsy, akward and unpolished. Only the once who care to litsen will notice the beauty, frustration, anger and times off happieness behind these songs.

Randomly stumbled about this video but I wanted to say that I think in “this thing on” via the promise ring he is talking about memories of bands or memories from songs playing. The Air Supply, Delaware, The Television all bands…idk or maybe he is being sarcastic like people telling you about music you’d rather be doing anything else than having that conversation.

Good tunes but also the height of pretentiousness. Many more bands would follow in their steps, growing even more pretentious often much less talented😢
