Above all, this video recording goes out to my buddy Chris L.; it was his fault that I found myself in Las Vegas at Best Friends Forever.
-----
Let me backtrack a bit. Chris and I met at work in Ottawa, Canada and soon became fast friends, bonding over music. It was he who introduced me to Cap'n Jazz in the first place. And I introduced him to Pinback, so I say we're even. In any case, Chris should have been at this festival but he's got a young family at home, so it was not possible this time.
-----
In any case, I only heard about Best Friends Forever after striking out on tickets for a couple of Cap'n Jazz reunion shows in Chicago this Fall. As I hunted around for additional tour dates, the festival came up. And what a line-up!!! The first day alone featured Pinback, American Football and Cap'n Jazz. I bought my ticket immediately and and so happy I did.
-----
Now...what else can be said about Cap'n Jazz? Highly influential...short-lived...so goddamn young...They were active for a little over six years and they were barely in their 20s by the time all was said and done. And yet what an incredible legacy of influence and so much more music that has come out of the Cap'n Jazz sphere, including the aforementioned American Football. Whenever I think of the band, a single word comes to mind: careening. The rush of some of my favorite songs of theirs feels like what it must be to be careening down a mountain slope on some demented toboggan with an avalanche trailing behind you. A pure rush of adrenaline...
-----
I know that the Tim Kinsella yelping/singing has been replicated in myriad emo bands since Cap'n Jazz first emerged then burned out fiercely into the atmosphere. It can be polarizing to some, but I freaking love it. And judging by the thousands in attendance at BFF, many of whom were shouting along to each and every word, I'm clearly not alone. The band played a nice mix of songs, including ones that I NEEDED to hear.
-----
I have a fairly steady hand when recording concerts and lemme tell you, all that vibration you get in some of the footage is from the crowd. And it was just exhilarating being there to share the moment with all those in attendance. And even those that could not be there but maybe get a little taste of it through this recording. Including Chris L. Love ya', buddy.
ps. please go out and see these bands in concert and support them by purchasing their merch!!! Let's keep music alive.
