I appreciate the knowledge coming from the first-hand experience of lifelong revolutionaries, but I'm a little confused here. You've got three people talking about Maoism - why is not a single one of them an actual maoist? How can the insight be anything more than superficial? This is painfully obvious in the way all three of the guests struggle (with the exception of *edit* David, who is at least knowledgeable on the history of Maoism) to conceptualize the ideological basis, theory and examples of praxis of modern Maoism - MLM (not Mao Zedong Tought!). Most maoists today are fighting revolutionary struggles in the global south - in the Philippines, in Nepal, in India, in Afghanistan or in Palestine. They're organized as parties and some have been fighting for decades. Not recognizing their accomplishments, the theoretical advances in theory by learning from their practical experience of applying Marxism is a crucial mistake. Just because you only know some college kids who call themselves maoists doesn't mean you can disregard the entire theoretical basis and its global application. As communists, we should strive to have principled discussions about things. This means studying the subject rigorously, analyzing all its parts, before coming to a conclusion. There are important books that shed some light on the philosophical advances as well as theory that demarcate Marxism-Leninism-Maoism from its previous iterations: - Critique of Maoist Reason & Continuity and Rupture: Philosophy in the Maoist Terrain by J. Moufawad-Paul - Documents of the CPP - The Second Rectification Movement - Of Concepts and Methods by K. Murali (Ajith) You can get all of them for free.

Gerald Smith is kinda off the wall. Historical optimist when he should be like Gramsci. China as a worker’s state, despite its crushing of the Jasic protests, its disregard of neighboring Southeast Asian allies and countries in the South China Sea territorial disputes because of its desire for resources and geopolitical military advantage, and its lack of C-M-C’. So it’s obviously not, even theoretically and especially on the ground. He’s right about the “Transitional Program” though. He’s also right about the Bloc of Four Classes, which is part of the Chinese program that has derailed where the direction of China as a socialist state should have gone, but they are correct in eventually repudiating GPCR and GLF even if their ultimate direction now has been bad. Coulda been much worse. Since Nixon normalize relations with China, they coulda destroyed China like they did Laos and Cambodia. Popular Front is a counterrevolutionary force. Also right.

Mao was probably among the Greatest revolutionary leaders of 20th century. He reunited world's most populous nation after decades of warlordism then destruction by Japanese invasion and set stage for modern prosperity in China
