@normanfinkelstein - please do release your memoirs. I loved listening to this excerpt. Hooked! Fascinating to hear your experiences. ♥️♥️♥️

I am not a Maoist but look at all these old fogeys in the comments section scorning the young guy. The truth is that to dismiss the youth is to turn a blind eye to developing and future political trends. If you turn to the older generation who have failed to establish successful revolutionary parties, you will find only pessimism. The consciousness of young people in the United States is wildly different and radicalizing rapidly in the direction of communism thanks to the worldwide crisis of capitalism. They are not responsible for the failures of the past and will certainly brush aside any naysayers and give the fight against capitalism their own try.

Excellent panel. Was funny when Norman just rebuffed the final question.

Though I personally think CJ heavily overstated the strength of contemporary Maoism and the unique merits of Maoism (laced with generalities and frankly the sort of over inflated rhetoric every Marxist tendency has its own version of), I think it's seriously to his credit that someone like that shows up to contribute.

Norm would've read the whole thing. 😅 and that's why I love him.

I'd like to recommend the younger panelist do a few years on a shovel, perhaps as a drain layers laborer. His hands look altogether too unworked. The sneering attitude and crunching of the drink bottle while Norman was talking tells me a lot about him.

He's got a f*cking ponytail for Christs sake. 5 years he'll be running his own plantation.

Unfortunately a dangerous fanatic (or more humanistically expressed: a person expressing dangerous fanaticism). It was bad already, but I was shocked when he began to extol Gonzalo. In my view that ideology - not just Gonzalo but the general outlook he expressed - has almost nothing to do with socialsm. It's about statism, obedience, frenzy. (Though I think bottle crunching is irrelevant here).

Thank you, Platypus for a stimulating and compelling experience. Norman has the ability to cut through apparent/ superficial complexity to the essence/simplicity of any concept within the ambit of his expertise. I suspect that this ability is a confluence of intrinsic intelligence, uncompromising dedication to abstract ideas of truth and justice, willingness to learn during decades of experience, incessant inquiry and years of teaching. He is a national treasure. Unlikely that CJ - as bright as he may be - will attain this level - his nervous movements including flickering eyes and busy hands suggests an unsettled mental/emotional state. Agree w/ Marius that a few years on a shovel and perhaps meditation might be in order.

Chuckled when they introduced the first three panelists, all having decades of hands on experience and, all accomplished academics, then the moderator goes "lastly we have some undergraduate nobody".😂

Thomas Sowell should have been on the panel. He qualifies because in his young adulthood he was a Marxist only to find with "honest" study, he was incorrect. That's kind of what I gather Finkelstein came to understand about Maoism. Finkelstein correctly observes there no monolithic consensus on such leftist philosophies and it's quite odd, modern Maoists or anyone serious about any means justifies the end utopia do forget the very notion of capitalism is as much not a monolithic consensus--all this disregarding the political vs. economic dimensions. I think Finkelstein likely irked the idealists in the crowd due to his honest intellectual assessments and his maturity of years.

This kid with the bottle, was TOTALLY rude while NORMAN ever so calmly addressed audience. What was up with this kid constantly so noisily& purposely picking up the bottle, SO annoyingly ONLY when NORMAN spoke. It's so obvious that Norman's presence ALONE are intimidating to him. Did anyone else notice that as the kid spoke NORMAN kept turning his head in sheer disbelief .

Very interesting. However, as often, there is too much lack of Marx & his idea of flfakse consciousness as distorted, largely inaccurate view of society-ideology. In contrast, he called sets if ideas about societies in general as world views. He also called accurate sets of ideas about societies as worldviews. Unfortunately, he did not have separate, different labels for both. But. any leftist “ideology” to Marx & Engels would be a grave insult or an ironic bad joke.

If you know anything about the sponsors then they invited the youngin as a set up on purpose as a ‘Western Maoist’ kinda-strawman on purpose so as to ridicule a ‘true-believer’ vs the idea of the face-value straight up partisan of the topic name Not that I mind bc its sorta hilarious for a Mao-bot kiddie setup as piñata But Norman is hilariously shrewd always

44:00 I'm sorry, did this stripling really say _gureeya_ combat? Because guerilla is what? Too confusing with the great apes? _Wow._ That's some hot jargon.
