When I think of DOOM, I still feel the loss. But his beats and his words bring me such incredible joy. Like when i'm with my friends every couple weekks I'll have a conversation which is like 'remember when he said read the signs no feeding the baboons, seeing as they got your back bleeding from the stab wounds.' And they definitely remember because i've brought it up before.

As a hip hop head from the UK I was always proud of DOOM, and found it really weird that he'd been living in Leeds for a while without me ever hearing about it. He was a genius.

King Geedorah taught me that musically speaking, hip hop can be anything. I'll never quite be able to articulate how hard it hit when I heard those samples from the beloved Godzilla movies of my childhood.

You know what I can’t forget about DOOMS passing? It was the imstragram post of October 31st with the pic of him throwing his mask out the back of a car. I just remember it just feeling really off from other posts I’d seen from Doom and that day I went out and bought the Venomous Villain Vinyl on eBay. My initial Feeling was that Doom was retiring from rhyming, So I wanted to buy VV2 before the price skyrocketed. Then December 31st hit and the news Doom passed away got out and I was just in a daze really. I didn’t even really process it for a few days but man what a loss for me personally because From KMD back in my sophomore year in High School until now Doom was like a brother in my head not just from his music but I used to always Say Zev seemed like the kind of dude I would vibe with. Same with Subroc who lowkey, Subrocs mission was and is to this day my Fave song off Mr Hood, though that whole album was a masterpiece in my eyes. But my Doom vinyl will Never leave my collection. Ever. long live DOOM!

I was working at Tower Records when he dropped Madvillainy. It was the only album I had on my recommended section the entire time I worked there. Not a lot of people knew about him back then. Expert levels of character building. He had a way of expressing comedy and tragedy that was super unique.

This video made me go back to an old Vox video you did an interview for on how rappers construct rhymes. I was a Madvillain fan at that point, but hadn't gotten to Doom's other stuff. Seeing you talk so passionately about his flow and writing style made me seek out more of his stuff and pay attention to the intricacies of his pen. Thank you, Mike. And the Previous Industries album last year was dope.

It’s also quite depressing that his death was likely the result of poor and inattentive medical care, something i’ve become accustomed to since moving to the uk. Not that it’s any better in the states, but the fact that the hospital had to release a statement about their negligence says a lot. It just makes me sad that we lost a one of a kind artist to an institution that, since the start of austerity, has been the cause of so much unnecessary pain and death. I think the sociological term is necropolitics

I grew up really sheltered in a place that only got AM radio, so I got exposed to new music mostly through friends I met as an adult. I first listed to MF DOOM when my boyfriend (who knows and loves hip hop deeply) found out that he had died. We listened to 3 of his albums on a long drive, and it hit me like nothing else had. I loved it immediately: the theatricality, the bars where you could hints of him laughing to himself, the sheer variety of it. I wish so badly that I could have known his music and seen him perform just once before he was gone

I’ve been reading the new DOOM biography by S.H. Fernando JR. Phenomenal read eoth so much insight into the man, the artist and the villain. Discovering DOOM was an acid head actually makes too much sense when you think about his writing style and the esoteric connections he would make in his lyrics. I always thought a good analog in rock music to Dumile's work would be a group like Ween...who are fantastically eclectic, extremely weird and often treated as a joke by people who casually engage with their work. Like you never know what you were gonna get with something Dumile put out, but you knew you were gonna get something that was probably really great. And when you lose an artist like that, it's not like you're never gonna get another unique versatile talented guy again, but you're never getting THAT particular voice ever again. Which is always worth mourning in whatever form that expression takes. But I tend to lean more with Mike's perspective here...all the things that make someone culturally relevant are a gateway to the kind of fans who will like his music. It might annoy older fans, but younger people don't have that baggage. They're just super psyched that the cool meme guy made music they like.

When you said you could hear the rawness and singularity of his vision, from the production to the vocals and mixing, etc in his early songs, you put words to why it felt so new, and so great. Like you, like Jim Heine, it felt like one of the biggest blows in a line of big losses in hip hop and music in general. Part of me hopes he just okie doked us and is chillin in the Bahamas somewhere with one more beer

I think the issue with the "This is MF DOOM" memes is just an unfortunate byproduct of current day internet culture and isn't specific to doom himself. Keep in mind the people who are making these memes are young. The way a lot of people who are younger (and "chronically online so to speak) people talk about/enjoy things is usually caked in MANY layers of irony. To somebody from the outside looking in it can seem antagonistic (and there's definitely a conversation to be had about that) but that's also part of the way the nihilistic mind of the online zoomer shows appreciation for things. I feel like your point about the different ways people enjoy his music hits right at the heart of why these memes are shared and I've seen firsthand people discover and love his artistry through them. I also think the point about memes being thought terminating cliches is definitely spot on but it's important to remember that they're cornerstone of internet culture and 9/10 times are made with love.

What makes this art form, this genre truly one of a kind, is the ability of ppl like DOOM, Mix Master Mike, Edan, Mos, etc to layer new ideas on ideas on ideas. I think when DOOM passed we lost a chunk of the soul of true hip hop. And it’s lonely being left in this world of minimalist, capitalist emcees who care nothing about pushing the art form to new frontiers.

DOOM was essential for me getting into hiphop more. I used to like hip hop enough as something to just have on when “partying” or as something to not get too caught up in, back in high school, which was the height of the bling era in the early 2000s, but I didn’t get into it much as a serious art until DOOM.. I definitely dug OutKast, as far as popular hiphop on the radio went, and later got really big into them, but it was ‘Mm.. Food’ that first really struck me as something elevated from the bling stuff that most of my friends played. Exploring all his different aliases back like 2005-06 after high school opened up a whole world to me, and I liked the “unserious” lyrics in DOOM a lot, and liked the clips of Spider-Man cartoons.. That was frankly a lot more appealing to me than “unserious” bling lyrics. DOOM’s brand of “unserious”, if that’s what someone wants to call it, was fun, funny, and just clever. Literally, the only actual popular, on the radio artists that stood the rest of time for me was OutKast, like I said. DOOM’s name is gonna be remembered and celebrated 20 years from now, while 90% of the stuff I was hearing in the 2000s growing up isn’t even gonna be in the conversation.

I still remember buying madvilliany and dangerdoom cd's at a best buy. Not knowing what it was, but something about that madvilliany album cover was so mysterious to me. The days i would pop in the madvilliany cd and read along to lyrics, not knowing what he was saying. The perplex lyrics really captivated me. His music was like a friend to me, and when i heard he passed away, that truly messed me up. Clearly, the man was a one of kind, and there would never be another one like him. I just don't get the same magic from any newer hip hop artist. This is why it's been difficult to really get into newer artists. I dont know if i'm in the wrong to think this way. DOOM will forever be my favorite, and as cliche as it sounds, every time i hear his music. I hear something different. Open Mike Eagle, love the content, man. I share your pain as well. I often think about that nas song "hip hop is dead." Maybe what hip hop used to be is dead. What hip hop(rap) is now. I can't say i like it very much, but what can you do. Everything changes.

Those musical itch scratching moments can be magical!! Im a metalhead, but im also a giant hip hop fan and have been since i was a kid!! This is off topic but i remember when like nu metal and suff was big in the late 90s early 2000s and thats what was what you heard for that kinda music, especially where im from!! I liked it but it always left me flat!! I remember when i first heard In Flames and that resolved something in my head!! Those are amazing moments!! Doom was a BMF and like people say when you lose a loved one, all you can really do is try to remember those amazing times and keep their memory alive!! I hope Jim can find his happiness again!! Just keep listening and doing the things you love!! RIP DOOM!!💪💪🤟🤟 Edit: elegy is a good word for it!! Also, music is very personal for a lot of people but i think hip hop can kindof be the most personal!! Theres a lot of very personal and very serious things that are talked about, especially with DOOM too, so i can see how people can feel like its one of their best friends or at least an important voice to them personally who passed in a situation like this!! DOOM is timeless!!😎😎💪💪

And as mike mentioned freestyle fellowship , hieroglyphics, murs , grouch etc.. imo modern rap flows literally come from what those cats were doing at the time. Mikah 9 still the craziest flows and P.E.A.C.E Just my opinion tho. It was the 90 s , was coming from underground NY stuff like co flow , early rawkus, wu tang before the fame, all the white label stuff. Weekend trips to the flea markets to pickup records out in the "suburbs" of Paris. Crazy times for me. Learned to rap imitating those dudes. Surprised but not surprised Anticon never comes up. Due to a horrifying combination of factors laid out very well in this video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJOafXube6yojLMsi=ZjuyIFNclhLnFzJK), DOOM was essentially condemned to negligent homicide by the British healthcare system. This man bore the loss of his kin, his citizenship, and ultimately his life because he lived in a callous world that doesn’t give a fuck about the poor. I’m sad that my favorite rapper died, but more than that, I’m enraged when I think about the way his life was taken from him.

Anyone have current info on DOOM's rhymebooks? I heard his estate was trying to get them back from Egon?

Interesting listening to u , the way u relate stuff resonates with me . Missed an opportunity in the early 2000s to move to Cali with a few underground cats from Canada to stay with anticon. Remember talking to some cats from hiero , sage francis and buck 65 about the touring schedules and the general work ethic and decided the risk was too much for a white kid from Canada. Became a cook and went to sound engineering school instead. I think maybe EL p is an example of indy sucess. Maybe even in a bigger way if u consider running a label. I slept on Doom at first actually . Took me a couple albums deep to get his flows. Plus i loved KMD first and Doom felt a bit different tbh. Great video Rap like this and other stuff u mentioned quite litterally saved my life and created a center for me that saw me.thru spouts of criminal behavior, drug addiction and mental health issues. Havent found substance like that in hip hop since then. Except for cats like urself , bus driver, blu and a couple others.

My first DOOM project was MM FOOD (in 2011-13 iirc) via looking up the sample for Odd Toddlers by Tyler the Creator. I was enamored for like 3-4 years after going down his entire discography.

With DOOM memes it distills his style into stacking a bunch of nonsense filler rhymes. It discredits the creativity and layered nature of what he wrote. You need the whole stanza or verse to provide context to his work.

I love doom and I also do think it sucks that he passed but the way your fans ask questions sounds so pretentious even if they’re not trying to sound that way lol. Find it hard to talk about even four years later? Bro.

How does the way someone expresses the fact they are still mourning for one of their favorite artists as “hard to talk about” so offending of your sensibilities you call it pretentious? You might not interact with art or music the same way they might, maybe think a little bit before you comment.

You described a similar version of how I came to love MF DOOM in '97 or '98, and I also consider him the GOAT. The sort of off-kilter-but-boosted-by-godlike-creativity of the production, and as you said, like many great writers do, writing the rhymes that entertained him. Weirdly, I came upon DOOM, Blackalicious/Quannum, Hieroglyphics, Project Blowed etc. on the Emusic service, IIRC, where you could get a free TMBG fleece I you signed up. The project TMBG put there was one of my least favorite releases of theirs, but I will always be grateful for them leading me to the place I discovered MF DOOM, Gift of Gab, Del, etc. ---FanonAndOn

@@open_mike_eagleleast favorite still means loved when it comes to TMBG. But revisiting the tracks that were specifically that album - it contains the better version of Edith Head, Dark and Metric, Reprehensible, Lullaby to Nightmares… it’s actually better than I remembered. Got too damn tied up with Solesides Greatest Bumps and DOOMSDAY! Also my bad this was 1999 . Means the first show of theirs I ever went to was on the Long Tall Weekend tour and they were en fuego on that tour. I’ll have to revisit the album 😊
