I think the most bitter pill here is that, before Wrath, many players who were at that time still very much fans of WarCraft in general, actually wanted Panderans. Badly. There were shitloads of threads asking for Chen, Pandarans, Pandaria, Brewmasters (which was all we knew of monking in WarCraft at the time), but by the time Mists was actually announced that audience had faded into obscurity and were completely outmatched by the people who knew WoW and only WoW and didn't give a flying fuck about Pandas and how cool they were in Frozen Throne.

I was always amazed by fact that WoWwiki (the older and much less updated of WoW Wikipedias, which allows people to even now see pages that were written 8 years ago and were never updated) listed Pandaria as one of expected future expansions, but when it actually came, people were complaining how WoW is copying Kung Fu Panda. I also have similar experience to you in terms of lore discussions with people. I started with Warcraft 3 and for me, Horde was never meant to be the biggest enemy of the Alliance, but just faction of orcs and their allies, whose main goal was to protect its people and Azeroth. And while they were enemies in the past, they evolved past the point where Alliance is defined as force fighting the Horde and Horde is defined as the force fighting against the Alliance. But there are people out there who started in WotLK or Cata and for them, Horde was about fighting the Alliance and Garrosh was basically personification of the true Warchief and his Horde was the true Horde. And even to this day, these people complain on forums how we are "Red-Alliance" and how we are pussies because Horde is not in all-out war with the Alliance even during the biggest Legion invasion.

For the record, I'm not trashing on the Wrath players, Wrath was great, it's just that Wrath blew their entire load when it came to the Frozen Throne content, AND put in DKs, bar far the more appealing class and lore for most players. Then Cataclysm happened, and now you're four years out and they're talking about Pandas and Monks after the biggest shit to date has just gone down and no one was having it by that point. If it had come as the first or second expansion instead of the fourth, I think Pandaria would be very well remembered.

Plus I really hate the Pandaren starting area. I purposely rolled a Tauren Monk because Kung Fu Beef was a more fun prospect.

Bleach demon hunter are more popular because you start at lvl 98 so its in all cases a farm character for free, even if you dont level him more, you can still use them for farming old raid mounts without any effort putting into leveling

I don't think I have ever missed a game more than I miss Mists of Pandaria. The class design was effectively flawless across most classes, especially Warlocks. (Destro, Affli mostly)

RiP Mists Frost Mage PvE. Perfect cascade of instant casts and extending your buffs with alter time. The rotation felt buttery smooth. We went from a fast paced fluid class to a slow, chunky priority system where nothing really lined up properly. No, I haven't played the spec in legion. Maybe it's a bit different now? "What's that? I'm in the apparent minority here, but MoP and monks were fantastic. You had an extremely high skill ceiling, easy gearing with reforges between brewmaster and windwalker, great aoe damage, great single target damage, loads of mobility including a warp between two locations, smooth as silk rotations, a unique class centre like dks had, a disarm and interrupt with a low as hell cd, the class was even the first to have combo points shared across all targets for fucks sake, and still it never felt like you were just spamming buttons. But it's easy to see why the vast majority of players didn't like the class; It's the same reason so many people play paladin and demon hunter. People want laid back rotations that do way more damage than they should do. I played paladin back in cata (that good shit) and it was great, but the transition to windwalker made me feel like I was spinning plates. As for MoP, you had the composer of skyrim's ost working on music, interesting and unique locations and quests, a rich story interwoven between horde and alliance tension, fantastic raids and bosses in terms of design and mechanics, great class playability across the board, for the most part, and everything felt unique and fresh. But, of course, the vast majority of players see MoP at the same face value they see kung fu panda, because if it isn't the same homogenized, dark fantasy that is still very cartoonish all the same in every way, they just can't see any shred of value in it whatsoever. Good thing blizzard listened to all their advice for the next expansion. WoD was fucking amazing!! /sarcasm

The problem with MoP is that Blizzard tried to do nuance. Unfortunately, most of Blizz's player base only wants grimdark, chest thumping, simplistic "it's called WARcraft!!!!" stories.

StudioghoulASMR Problem is, in pvp ret was fine. In pve nearly all dps are mind numblingy easy. Pvp wise a good ret had to do his rotation while offhealing properly and using 7-8 utility spells on his other two teammates accordingly. the amount of keybinds was absurd.

Pandas and monks, though referred to Brewmasters were in the warcraft universe before that shitty panda movie (whatever it's called) came out. I think the most ironic thing about the poor reception of the Monk and Pandaren was that the community had been asking for Pandaren for *years*, ever since Chen Stormstout first appeared in WC3. Everyone knew that we were going to Pandaria at some point and yet there was still so much drama and tears over MoP because "UUUUUUH BLIZZARD ARE TRYING TO APPEAL TO CHILDREN" and "UUUUUUUH SO UNORIGINAL STOP COPYING KUNG FU PANDA BLIZZARD" when it was something they have been asking for and speculating about since Vanilla.

It wasn't even a child's play expansion as it touched more on the war between the horde and the alliance at a boiling point for the new continent. It touched up on some rather grim themes such as war crimes, tyranny, betrayal, lust for power.

I was surprised at first that Monk was getting a legacy video so quickly considering its only been around 2 full expansions, but I totally get where you are coming from Preach. In terms of gameplay, Monk is one of the best classes and it is criminal that they don't get the love they deserve from the community. Making a martial arts oriented class is very viable. FFXIV has a Monk class and it is pretty cool with decent player representation. I think Blizz just needs to add some cool visuals to entice people.

I think it's really more of a case of class fantasy than anything. It doesn't help that most of the monk's spells are tied to Pandaria but even if you strip that down you get a DnD 3.0 monk which themselves were quite underplayed. When people try out a fantasy game (specially of the western variety) they tend to gravitate towards knights and wizards. Monks are too unconventional for most people.

And we notice how the Demon Hunter got to boost up to current level right at the beginning of its run. Looks like they learned from making Monks start out at 1 - that was a huge hole to have to climb out of, and telling me I had to level through those Cataclysm zones again wasn't exactly tickling my fancy either.

I agree with a lot of the things said here, but I also think that the pedigree of classes like the Demon Hunter and Death Knight has something to do with it as well. Even people who barely pay attention to the lore know the stories behind characters like Arthas and Illidan. Despite the fact that MoP has some incredibly dark themes, it's hard to capture that same feeling of 'bad-ass' when you compare the monk intro experience. Basically unless you're a panda, there isn't one and the panda starting zone is tied with goblin for the worst in the game for me. The Death Knight and Demon Hunter intro experiences you actually fight on behalf of the person who is the inspiration for your class. They introduced the class to a lukewarm reception, but they could have created some attachment if they had engineered a class intro that helped us feel like this class was going to be great.

Been a monk main since MoP launched. I was so hyped to be able to be a leather wearing tank which used a staff (and didn't have to turn into an animal to do so...I like seeing my gear) and I love martial arts. Never considered really playing a Pandaren, being a drunken Dwarf was good enough for me :) I think you're so spot on about the perception of the class being so closely tied to the jokey Pandaren race. Been Brewmaster Spec mainly throughout WoD and Legion and I really wish people would give it a go. Honestly a really fun class with interesting mechanics, on all three specs, and you DON'T have to be a Panda! Almost every other race can be a Monk, give it a go! :D

I absolute love the amount of work you guys put into making these videos! I played a Monk at the end of MoP and had ALo OT of fun with it on the Isle of Thuner and the Timeless Isle, but if you look at some of the other hybrids in Legion - Druid, Paladin - they just do everything better than Monks seem to do. I think it's a decent bet that Monk is one of the next classes to get a major rework!

I fell in love with the monk in mop, it was so freaking well done. The mistweaver being so incredibly complex that you could never possibly master it, the windwalker being all over the place doing cool shit. The brewmaster with their pretty epic animations. But I took a break from wow in wod, tried it out in legion, and wtf is this? There's nothing left of the cool, complex class I loved. The mobility stayed I guess, but it's all so hollow.

I probably would've mained a Mistweaver in Legion if Blizzard had not decided to make them a full on caster healer, instead of further developing fistweaving which was arguably the coolest part about the Mistweaver in WoD. Being able to throw hots, then move in to kick and punch the shit out of a boss, creating off healing and recovering mana to then chi torpedo into the raid and doing revivals and rushing jade winds for massive AoE healing was an amazing feel

I get the start of the pandaren hate. Sort of. There is this bullshit conceit that the Warcraft series is serious in tone, which is fucking nuts. Maybe it was to start with, I don't know, but Warcraft III nipped that in the bud pretty quick, so any argument that Pandas are "too silly" will always piss me off. But I get that Pandas meant a new direction without wrapping up some previous story mysteries, and I get that ascending an Easter egg to actual cannon. I also get that Kung fu panda was fairly recent and backlash from blizzard obviously capitalizing on that could piss people off. And the Asian thing. I can see people not wanting this asian inspired themes in the game. Change is scary after all. Now though? Pandaria has the most interesting backstories of any area, Pandarans are as fleshed out, if not more so, then any of the other playable races, and the story was a complete, and very very good. It made perfect use of the asian inspired culture, it had multiple interesting villains and heroes, and it just made sense. Pandaran hate now is honestly stupid.

The problem was that Blizz built an entire X-pac around them. Mist lore wise was some of the most boring and dull content I have ever played in WoW and the only thing that kept me interested was the Horde/Alliance war. I'm pretty sure that if pandas had a smaller part in the X-pac, people wouldn't have shat on it that badly.

They won't. Lore people would lose their shit, because lore wise a panda dk is pretty much impossible. Pandas weren't around during any of the death knight periods.

Mazzmaker69 There are a few 'special snowflake' cases like the DK Panda follower from the garrison recruitment you can get, otherwise a Panda DK would be a sort of '4th gen' DK, a corpse raised by the knights of the ebon blade, which is perfectly acceptable, they'd just have to start at a later point then the other DK's, say... level 100 with their own tutorial like when you buy a 100 boost, obviously missing the whole 55-58 DK story line.

I love my monk, and people don't realize Chen Stormstout existed before kungfu panda did didn't he, wc3 came out in 2002, kfpanda came out in 2008 so if anything kfpanda ripped off chen stormstout. but pandaria came out in 2012 so people were of course comparing it heavily to the dumb kids movie as they saw it. But before all of that ..apparently people wanted pandas, originally it was introduced as a april fools joke, apparently people loved it so it was put into wc3 by popular demand. With kfpanda 2 having come out the year before mop though, a stigma rose and people couldn't help but hate on it. So there ya go to anyone who didn't know. (I will say my monk isn't a panda though, I'm just explaining why the panda hate was misplaced, I mean if you hate pandas regardless you do you, but still the kungfu panda comparison was technically not in the right. lol)

Couldn't agree more, Preach. Monks are a lot of fun, and their high mobility gives them another dimension that other classes just don't have (maybe DH) which is having to gauge risk/reward with your positioning. Whether you are ranged, healing or tanking, the reward mode up to monks has been, stand still. God, I hate standing still. Why stand still and click cool-downs? Why even play if that's all you're doing?

I came back to WoW from WotLK. Leveling my hunter I stumbled upon a MW monk in some dungeon. I found their green visuals very pretty and soothing. AFK Healingwith the Jade Serpent Statue was great, because I was so tired of having to spam buttons all the time to squeeze the DPS out of my character. Now in raids I can't have even a single moment of taking a finger off my keyboard, BUT: KJ Heroic I really understood what makes the Monk a unique healer. Running around, rolling, soaking, looking for max targets for Essence Font, sticking with the melees to maximise Refreshing Jade Wind and dealing damage to get my mana back. HELL YEAH DUDE! Getting my Curve achievement was one of the best experiences I've had in the game EVER. I just can't imagine myself being that poor shadow priest in the backline, trying to find a place to cast my spells in peace. Plus, I get to summon a dragon to heal everyone for me. How cool is that?

Ultimately Mists of Pandaria suffered the same fate as Wind Waker: Decried as stupid and childish by the insecure douchebags of the world who keep demanding everything have a "mature tone" in the most aggressive and juvenile sense possible, and appreciated more by people after it was over once contrasted against a sequel that tried way too hard to swing in the opposite direction. Anyone who decried Mists of Pandaria as being a "kiddie game" and trying to use that as a criticism needs to remember what game they're actually playing. Maybe two years of Dadgar puns will force them to chill out and stop overcompensating.

I was a US top 10 WW monk in MoP; here are my thoughts. Preach, m8, I love you dowg, but you keep saying that monk gameplay is sterling and that largely people dislike it because it isn't "cool." While that may be true, something I think you forgot to mention is that the gameplay is *different*. I consistently state that 5.4 windwalker was the absolute pinnacle of DPS class design. That spammy, 'every millisecond matters' mentality, combined with you constantly having to make rotational decisions that are all very important, makes for an extremely engaging time. Follow that up with the fact that MoP era WW was one of the only classes that placed an extreme value in all 3 secondary stats, along with almost any talent build being competitive, and you have a min-maxer's dream. The skill cap was almost nonexistent. In fact, I recall the WoW Devs even commenting on the Simcraft windwalker results, stating that "they weren't worried that WW sims were so much higher than literally everything else, because they don't think there's a single player in the world that can get close to those numbers." When WoD came, the gameplay changed. You lost a lot of the flexibility, and the frantic 'every millisecond matters' chain of forward-thinking dried up a little. I tried to like it, I really did, but I just couldn't. A vast majority of the high end monks that I knew and competed with all hung up their Seismic Bores for this same reason. It got a bit better in Legion, but nowhere close to capturing the magic that was there in 5.4. I do really miss my monk, but until I get that back, and I don't think I ever will; I have no plans to return to it.

I went enhancement shaman for WoD, and now in Legion I just play casually between several classes. The slowdown kind of killed the game for me; I gave up on raiding after Blackrock Foundry because no class felt fun to me anymore. Then there was the whole diablo loot nonsense but that's outside the scope of this video.

Ordacleaphobia I'm loving legion right now as a fury warrior. Having a non-resource gated rotation, and really good short and long cds is really engaging. If you haven't tried it, play a fury warrior; it's fun that you can change your rotation and adapt to each scenario. Also, I can't imagine legion being fun unless you raid or do high mythic+ since they're the only difficult content you can do right now, so I recommend that.

I agree with all of your comment. I loved WW during 5.4 and how face paced it was, I loved those stupid instant cast healing orbs you could put down. I remember having some really strong pulls on H Thok and blowing guildies out of the water a few months before the Mythic change. Those were the fuckin' WW days man. I also stopped raiding during BRF for basically the same reason. I'm not sure what it is, but I just can't enjoy WoW anymore so I unsubbed a few months ago.

"The monk just isn't cool" This sums up the problem with the class imo. I play DPS pretty exclusively, and Windwalker, despite having an interesting rotation and being a very effective damage dealer, is far less appealing than pretty much every other melee in the "badass" department. I don't find it visually satisfying, the lack of actual weapons really bothers me, there are no awesome cooldown. Warrior has bladestorm. Bladestorm is cool. Monk has... Touch of death? I Guess? Doesn't matter that ToD is a way better skill in a single target raid fight. It's bland by comparison. As a melee dps I just wanna feel like i'm fucking shit up. Monk totally lacks that feeling. I am currently maining a DH. Why? Because it's a fucking spectacle. Sure, sometimes you're just slamming that Chaos Strike. But when using the full rotation with the dashing and the blade dance and the fucking fel barrage it's just like GOD DAMN THIS IS BEAUTIFUL. I think that's what the average player wants from a game like this, and Monk never delivered anything like that.

Wait until you try enhancement shaman. It's just so generic and uninteresting compared to the pre-Legion (especially in Cata and MoP) enhancement shaman. Now enhancement shamans feel like a combat rogue with no stealth, shit dps and a more idiotic rotation. The old priority-based rotation was so interesting and rewarding that you felt powerful regardless of your actual dps, pretty much like an MoP ice mage but with much more fun utilities.

For me I just couldn't stand the oriental theme of the Monk and I know others also hate it. They should have made them like the diablo 3 monk with holy magic. I remember seeing the monks in scarlet monastery and thinking that they were pretty badass and I think a scarlet crusade themed monk would have been cooler..

I love monk. It is probably one of my favorite classes aesthetic wise and it has always had some of the best gameplay. I have always levelled a monk to max level during every expansion since their inception. During MoP it was my main, during WoD and Legion they have been the second class I maxxed (I like to try a new class every expansion as my main) and I always enjoy all three specs so much. Plus their gameplay has always been fastpaced and interesting for all three specs! I love monk, especially when they are pandaren!

They have a lack of flair. There are some cool things, sure, but nothing that makes you feel awesome. Ideas to spruce it up: 1) Wall Running - Give us like 5 sec or something of running up walls or across walls Lucio style. 2) Double Jumping Height - Not a double jump, but more of a higher bound, maybe tied with how long you hold spacebar down. 3) Wall Jump - If not number 2, what about being able to jump from wall to wall ala Mario. 4) Special Stun - Instead of doing legsweep, imagine if you uppercut someone up into the air, then leapt up and kicked them back down. Would count as a stun, just looks awesome.

I had quit wow at the end of Cata playing a shaman and decided to return to the game with Legion as it looked very promising. I watched all of your beta videos to get a sense of what I wanted to play, I ended up going with an Enhancement shaman because it was fun, familiar and I was jumping straight back into a raiding guild. Monk was a very close second and has become my primary ult, as soon as raid is over i'm playing the monk. Each spec is fun and engaging to play and I love it :)
