Enjoy the show. It is now my favourite after several rewatches. Its maturity just really hits home.

In the comics it explains that Aang tried to give the firenation colonies back to the Earth Kingdom, but the firenation had already settled down and had families with the earth natives. They didn't want the firenation citizens to be sent back to their country, so Aang created that colony as a united Republic where people of every nation was welcome. It became Republic City. There's KZbin videos of people summarizing the comics for people who don't have the time or money to invest in it.

Glad to see you're enjoying it so far! Some things to note going into it: - The show was only greenlit on a season-by-season basis (with the exception of 3 and 4). This does affect pacing and plot points. - This takes place roughly 70 years after ATLA. Korra is 17, making Aang about 66 when he died. Whether or not you consider that to be an early death depends on if you factor in the extra 100 years he spent on ice. - So far, the descendants to the previous show are Lin Beifong (earth/metalbender, daughter of Toph + unknown father), Tenzin (airbender, son of Aang + Katara), Kya, and Bumi. Kya and Bumi (briefly mentioned by Katara), are Tenzin's siblings. The show has not mentioned if they are benders, but we know Tenzin is the only master airbender, so they're left with waterbending and/or no bending.

This episode aired April 2012. The Promise (comic about what happened to Zuko's mom) released March through October 2013. Jinora asking what happened to Zuko's mom was so frustrating to watch as it aired since we still had no clue. I think The Search was announced not long after the first episode, so the writers knew what they were doing.
