He tries to be very responsible, can be stern with people, but can get emotional, sometimes get caught up in the fun (like how he cheered Korra’s victory here), and serves as strong emotional support for others. For some background on why Korra is kinda acting like a brat; besides her personality being compared to Aang making the contrast bigger, she's basically a sheltered kid. She mostly wasn't allowed to leave the white lotus training grounds, while being constantly told about her importance and duty as the Avatar, and being raised on the stories of adventure and growth that the Gaang went through. For her whole life being the Avatar was made as her whole identity, but she rarely got to exercise its power, or learn from real-world experience.

the reason korra’s a brat is because she’s been sheltered her whole life training with the white lotus, so she’s never been outside in the real world until now and she’s also a teenager which they’re usually brats majority of the time. korra is also the avatar learning to be a normal human just like how aang was a normal kid but he had to learn how to be the avatar. don’t worry though korra does change (also i’ve been waiting all week to see this so i’m happy that you guys are enjoying the show and going to continue the reactions!)

One thing I want yall to remember is that Korra is the Avatar, but with past Avatars, they've always travelled the world and learned from other masters. Korra is different. This episode is the first to have a recap after the opening sequence. The newspaper that Korra reads has pictures of Tahno and Amon on the back page. The newspaper Korra burns has pictures of Lin Beifong and Tarrlok. Tenzin tells Korra that his father had a hard time learning earthbending. His challenges were documented in "Bitter Work". While meditating together, Tenzin tells Korra that "air is the element of freedom". Iroh says something similar when he informed Zuko about the four nations in "Bitter Work". When Korra escapes Air Temple Island to go to the Pro-bending Arena, she dives into the water using a similar impact-softening waterbending technique Aang used in his battle against Phoenix King Ozai in "Sozin's Comet, Part 3: Into the Inferno".

When Korra came out, a lot of ATLA fans (myself included) gave it such a hard time because of our extremely high expectations. I finally rewatched Korra for the first time since 2014 and it was so much better than I gave it credit for back then. Something to keep in mind as you go through the seasons is how much Nickelodeon messed up the progression of this show. They were not promised multiple seasons from the get-go. Nick kept giving and taking away permission, which was really frustrating for the writers. They thought they would only have 2 seasons but then they were promised more and had to write new villains that made sense with the previous seasons. Ultimately, Nick stopped airing Korra on television (middle of S3, I believe) and only had it available online through their website because the themes were getting too dark for kids TV. I just think that's really important to keep in mind as you watch this show, because a lot of us judged this show too early without knowing the problems they had behind the scenes.

What happened was Nickelodeon hadn't even given the team (that were making Korra) a second series yet so they thought they had to finish up the whole Legend of Korra in one season...... Then after a chunk of the season was done the team were given ONE more season AND THEN after that was done they were given 2 more seasons This is why some parts feel rushed. So the stroy lines in The Legend of Korra had to be wrapped up once at the end of the 1st season then at the end of the 2nd season and then finally at the end of the (last) 4th season I don't know if you already know this but just in case fyi

yay!!! mako and bolin! i really like them a lot. mako was my obvious fave because zuko and firebending baes but bolin is awesome. i think he's much more naive than sokka though which is wild considering how he and mako grew up but i think that just kind of shows how mako sheltered bolin from some other stuff. the pro-bending stuff is cool but i can't wait until we get more into the amon storyline.

I’m tired of this complaint. That’s literally only for Mako, Bolin and Korra once in a while. All other fighters use Martial Arts techniques or meditation moves. They even got Sifu Kisu back who helped with Avatar. The only difference is the other elements are learning from each other. For instance some waterbenders bend like earth Enders and vice versa.

I completely understand where you're coming from with the comparison of the characters, because I used to think the same at the beginning too. You have Korra who's the avatar, Mako should be meant to "replace" Zuko and Bolin Sokka, because he is the comic relief in the group. It's kinda interesting tho, that when you'll start to get deeper into the series, the characters change so much that comparing them with the original team becomes impossible since their characteristics are so different from theirs. So keep an open mind for everyone and I hope you'll enjoy them as much as you enjoyed the guys in Atla❤

There’s a lot of components that lead to people not being able to relate to Korra initially [I’m trying to be vague as to avoid spoilers]: -She’s a 16 year old female who’s leaving her small town for the big city and has a very narrow/naïve view of how the world works. Of course as a teenager, it’s hard for her to admit she “doesn’t understand”. People forget how “overly sure” teens are with how limited their scope of experience is. - She doesn’t actively listen. This one is a combo of lack of patience and empathy which is VERY common in people that no one wants to admit to. For a direct comparison, the Avatar role as we learn from ATLA should be compassionate. It’s very rare for teens to have this in abundance at that point in their lives. - She’s a very head strong, emotional person who is action prone. You actually see this trait more in teenaged male characters. This is directly counter to how people saw the Avatar because Aang was fundamentally different wanting to avoid conflict and who’s actual problem was the lack of decisiveness. - She’s was raised as an elite athlete. This one is a bit deeper exploration of the point above, as a child she’s shown she is a prodigy in physical activities. The White Lotus have been teaching her all sorts of bending since she was little. It’s clear she loves it and has poured all of her focus into it. It would probably be safe to say this was the CENTER of her whole childhood development and CORE to her personality. Many people watching Avatar probably can’t relate to this at all and probably dismiss this as her being stubborn or single minded. - Last point (for now) the introduction of romantic teenage entanglement is …. a factor here and I’ll leave it at that. Glad you guys are liking the show and Imon hit it on the head of “it’s hard not to compare it to the old series”.
