But if you think of the fact it created a plot hole on the magic system of the avatar world, it is pretty terible writting. I mean lava bending is a cool stuff, but here they made it looks like it's a mutated ability, and not a skill. In the original avatar world, people was born with bending has to learn some technique in order to perform, even metal bending is a skill. However, here in ss3 legend of korra, they built up that Bolin cannot learn to metal bend because he was not born a metal bender, and later he can lava bend out of nowhere because he was born a lava bender since all along. If it a skill, it can be learnt and need to be learnt before performing. Throughout LoK, they described bending just like a mutation since the beginning where korra can bend 3 elements properly without any training.

@Nghia Duong I think Bolin learning lava bending is the same way Toph learnt how to metalbend. Earthbenders usually have to face things head on and have to be stronger than the thing they’re dealing with, so Bolin struggling against the lava initially then learning how to lava bend makes sense as he was in a scary situation also the decision to make Korra have all three elements then master them at the start of show was just to speed up the process and not show the same story as ATLA bc Korra was mastering spirituality in the show while Aang was mastering the elements

@@minhnghiaduong997 the amount of energy required to turn earth into lava is INSANE, it makes sense that it's a rare ability, you have to change the nature of earth to be similar to water, and at the same time force the particles to vibrate with enough energy to create lava.

When Toph figured out metal-bending she bend with the classical earth-bending style of a strong foundation and heavy movements. Bolin mostly bends during his matches, which require light footwork for mobility and quick chops of the discs instead of launching boulders. Bolin could not wrap his head around bending something stiff and polished as metal, but quickly picked up how to bend lava what is very flexibel and has no actual form.

I wonder if lava bending requires air bender like movements. After all, a professional bending match is how Korra learned the first principle of air bending. Bolin applying similar principles wouldn't be a surprise.

Just a bit more stiff. When he was fighting thoses thugs in that scene where you can hear Beric, that spin he does looks like an air bending move. Maybe he needs to combine both forms, and that is why lava bending is so rare?

Kind of? Metal bending requires a strong level of precision that's in tune with the material itself; it is quite literally earthbending refined to the highest degree. Lavabending is a very flow-y (messy maybe?) approach that takes on water; you're still on neutral jing, but you're willing to be oscillate between more positive and negative focuses to achieve the desired result.

We actually saw that earth benders can bend liquid metal like water benders when they tried to poison Korra. So liquid states of earth be it in metal or lava can benefit from water bending forms. The same way water benders like Desna and Eska bend ice like earth benders very rigid and stoic. So if you apply sub elemental bending than using styles from different arts can help you bend it more naturally.

Bolin adopted the water style of movements and adapted them to fit his earth bending for probending. Ghazan movements were more acrobatic, and flowed instead of the typical standstill earthbender. I think any earthbender can lava bend, just that traditional earthbending doesn't give the skills required to do it. But adapting other skills like the water bending style can influence bending.

fashiha rz I think it’s just not that useful. You need a lot of steam to cook someone alive, and it doesn’t have as much impact as just punting them with ice. Moreover, it might be too different from water for most waterbenders, like how Toph had difficulties with sand.

For example: Electrocuted in a pool of water, suicide by collapsing cavern, exploding head, a joint suicide murder by blowing up a boat, suffocation via sucking the air out of someone's lungs. And that doesn't mention the straight up torture they do to Korra in season 3. In conclusion, LOK is gruesome as hell.

Vince Mcmahon Why not? I’ve never watched Avengers Endgame or She-ra and loads of other stuff. I just get recommended clips from them based on what I’ve watched and watch them because I don’t mind spoilers at all. Albeit the only Endgame clips I’ve seen is the big battle. Actually to add on to that I never finished ATLA for a few years. Just up to 3/4 or 1/2 of book 3 and the rest I watched clips of on KZbin. Didn’t see that Katara and Aang kissed which personally, would have preferred if they didn’t get together at all. Platonic friendships are the best ships don’t @ me. Loved that Sokka drew a goofy drawing of them all together though. Also also to add on to that, Adventure Time. I watched up halfway through all the episodes before I just stopped but continued to watched clips of it, at least the ending and the songs, until you know, the end. It’s just my style :p

It's possible that once the lava cooled and solidified, the people inside could still come out, as the robot is likely heat-resistant. In this case, Bolin merely immobilised them. He didn't fry them LOL

I love the stance and forms that Bolin uses for lavabending. It's so much more agile and focused - it calls back to his advice to Korra about pro-earthbending - stay light on your feet and dig in at the last second. It also looks like he's been influenced by waterbenders and firebenders (kicks, streams of lava vs Ghazan) and we all know that multidisciplinary bending is the strongest.

Lightning is probably due to kinectic manipualtion of electrons/ negative charged ion in the body to generate the electricity. Which is why iroh in studied water bending to understand how to counter the ability since water has nature of polarity change and can insulate electrictiy if impurity are absent. So basically hold the electricity is during redirection is temoparity insulating the body from opposing lighting then probably use chi to polarise the body to be negatively charge and repel the negative charge lighting away from the body and back at the opponent

To all those saying it because of his fire nation heritage it's not at all. Lava is 100% earth just molten and hot. If that were the case Ghazan would not be able to lavabend only Bolin would. It's more akin to water benders solidifying and cooling water thus creating ice. In this case it's heating and controlling a more viscous type of earth. I'd assume it's such a rare ability in earth benders because it goes against natural earth bending tactics. Whereas water is the element of change earth is the element of stability. Think of it as Iroh developing new techniques by borrowing from other element techniques. Edit: People really like pushing their head canon as canon don't they?

I think that for Bolin... It is more towards the genetics. Mako is a firebender. Which means they got parents of one side firebender and the other side earthbender. So Bolin is a mix fire and earth which would give him this talents. Maybe... Who knows, right? Which maybe... Just maybe... If genetics are really the case. It is not impossible for Mako to get lava bending but not as strong as Bolin since Mako is more pure towards firebending alone and he also already got that lightening bending...

ryugajin that’s not how it works, at all. It’s a rare earth bender trait (as toph pointed it out) that not every earth bender is capable of doing. It’s like with water benders how they cool the water to solidify it or heat it up to make it into steam and fog. Has nothing to do with genetics

Funny thing about that scene: Sozin actually demonstrated the rarest form of fire-bending in the series so far - heat-bending. They used smoke for the visual but he clearly sucked the heat out of the lava turning it back into rock and shot it into the sky.

I think lavabend is similar to what water benders do, they can freeze and evaporate water, with rocks you can melt them and solidify them. Probably it’s easier for those who’s parents are earth and fire benders, like this dude

Bo-lin uses waterbending-like curving motions, like what he saw in pro-bending, short spikes of fluid. He should have been studying ghazan's moves as soon as he knew he could lavabend; the flowing rushes, the hurled chunks, the spiked upward bursts that mimic realistic volcanic activity. To his credit, he did start to use those moves against the mechasuits, a flowing rush after slamming his fists into the ground to heat it, and waterbending-like movements makes his earthbending unexpectedly fluid. His greatest lavabending feats also mimicked Ghazan's; the melted ground beneath Kuvira's mech had the same movements as Ghazan melting "na" sing se's wall.

The only reason lava bending is so rare is because bolin has not taught anyone how to do it like with metal bending tops taught people how to metal bend that is why it became so common in legend of korra so if bolin taught people how to lavabend it would be much more common

To everyone who said that katara picked up Bloodbending as fast as bolin picked up lava... Katara picked up her bloodbending technique while she was doing it on full moon, when her powers were to her fullest. Also Hama taught her how to and they were fighting. Also Waterbending is really based on emotions. And with Toph see she used her seismic sense to ,,See“ the earth in metal. The story that the guru told aang about how everything is connected and Toph learning she was able to metalbend when she wasn’t able to in the first part of season 2 (when she was captured with aang and when she didn’t wanted to go into the firenation tank (?) bc metal wasn’t a surface on which she could see, was literally ICONIC and showed development. These little details are what makes ATLA so great. Also she was the greatest earth bender in the word (a master) which Bolin was not at all at this point of his life. I really liked to see how he struggled to metalbending and would’ve loved to see more of his journey in finding out he could lavabend. Like the background of lavabending. I would’ve loved to see an close view of his face, when he did it. Seeing the fear in his eyes and the little hope he had. Not just a 20 sec action part and a low comment after. Lavabending is a really advanced bending. If this lavabending dude would’ve been bolins teacher, it would’ve been more interesting u know ? More comprehensible. How they did it was rushed and not really iconic as it actually should’ve been. They should’ve put more focus on things like this. Instead they focused on making stupid film. Wasted material ! And lightning bending in ATLA was only a royal thing. Also Iroh explained us how one was able to do it. See in ATLA we get all the information we need to understand the art and technique of bending. Ik LOK is different but with lavabending they could’ve done more. Its really a shame cause its pretty epic.

Now I want to see an earth bender master both metal and lava bending and even refine and forge metal straight from rock or concrete. ie melts a cliff and pulls out a pound or so of iron or uses a ball of molten metal to fuse a door shut using the rebar in the wall so much potential combined with an air bender who fights with liquid oxygen or nitrogen. And a fire bender who fights with light and you have an awesome tv series. I really want to see this.
