I'm glad they didn't just go "well Korra's got the poison out so she's okay now" and she actually has to deal with the trauma she's been through. This episode showed the effects of PTSD masterfully.

A perfect example than when people say "you're like family" they don't mean you're EQUALLY loved and respected as any other member, but that you're "similar" to a family member, like a very good friend, but when and if shit ever hits the fan, they will all remind you you're a second class member of the family. Su would have killed Kuvira but forgiven (and not jailed!) Batar Jr. for doing exactly the same thing. How painful it must be for Kuvira that her mother figure doesnt think she's deserving of compassion just like her kids do.

To be fair for all intents and purposes when Bolin joined Kuvira was on the up and up, but after 3+ years her power started to corrupt her. The jury is out on when she started to go off the deep end but she was 1000% good when they took back Ba Sing Se

With how we know the creators got screwed with money being cut and forced to cut back on one of the episodes we could have possibly seen it. The recap episode was suppose to be a Kuvira backstory episode. So maybe we would of sympathized more and understood how she fell if we got it. Sad since she was actually really interesting.

Honestly, I support her right up until this episode, and also the whole "purge of non-earth kingdom origin' and "take back Republic City for...reasons" thing. Sure, she's a bit brutal/harsh, but that's how you gotta be when you're trying to piece a nation together. She can't just run a charity if she wants to actually stabilize and restore the whole kingdom.

One of the most interesting things about the Kuvira situation IMO is that Su is almost entirely in the wrong. She was in the unique position of having the ability, resources and influence to do something about the Earth Kingdom falling apart around her but chose not to, allowing thousands if not millions of people to suffer. She got furious when Kuvira, Bataar and most of her guards chose to leave to help, which when you think about it sounds a lot like the beginning of the hero’s journey. She sat around doing nothing the entire time Kuvira was actually helping people and eventually becoming more authoritarian. As soon as the situation actually threatens her city she demands instant action from an outsider that actually might be able to help, despite her having refused to do just that. And finally she breaks a truce and attacks Kuvira without giving diplomacy a chance

7:04 Thank you, Boom, for pointing out a big issue I think gets seriously glanced over by a lot of people: Su is honestly in the wrong here, and she *never* cops to it. Say what you want about Kuvira, we saw a fraction of how bad shit was when the Earth Queen was assassinated. Literally all of Ba Sing Se went to hell and, apparently, it only got worse. Tbh I think the showrunners didn't do enough to establish this (outside of a lot of telling and not a lot of showing) to the point where people just asusme Kuvira is a big mastermind orchestrating fake bandit attacks to force her order on everyone because the alternative is challenging - Kuvira actually did and has been working for years to bring things back to stability and put down these organized crime efforts. And the reason Kuvira was driven to the extreme of law and order was not just the state of the Earth Kingdom (and her own backstory which was also unfortunately axed because of the studio cutting budget) but because of Su refusing to act herself. Half of Su's guard, Su's son, and even the leadership of the United Republic and the Earth Kingdom supported Kuvira's efforts and stood by her for *years* because she was doing a service and actually bringing in change that no one else was. Others like the Air Nation could treat the symptoms by fending off bandit attacks but there was nothing available to be a sustained guard against it; Kuvira was/is that sustained presence to not just make order but maintain it. Su could have stepped in at any time, Kuvira begged her, and she had *way* more resources than Kuvira did. She complains about it now but she could have easily done what Kuvira did but possibly quicker and with the balanced mind to let it go when it was done, and Kuvira would have been by her side 100%. Kuvira is in the wrong for how far she fell in handling things, but Su is the "good man doing nothing" that allowed just as much evil if not moreso.

These have been my thoughts for YEARS. Thanks for articulating it like this. 1 thing I'll add: the main reason Su acts this way is because she's a pretty selfish person. Zaofu was fine, so she didn't care to step in. And if her OWN city wasn't threatened by people she had PERSONAL connection to, she wouldn't have lifted a finger.

So it turns out wearing metal uniform with a Metalbender is not the best position to negotiate...as well as making the Avatar equivalent of Nukes and not being okay with her wanting to look deeper into it For Su I think asking Korra wasn't a bad thing, Kuvira is literally bringing a military force to their nation under threat of invasion, that seems like something in the Avatar's job description. The aftermath not so much. Then again Korra got played too, even 1 on 1 she has been well off-step, and her own mental blocks got in the way again.

We got hints of what they took inspiration from but this episode really solidified that this season represents their version of our World Wars. A leader conquers her own kingdom, forcing people to conscribe to her army, like a certain mustachio'd man. Other countries keep arguing about staying out of the fight and wanting peaceful solutions while the internal conflict grows worse. Those who refuse to bow down to the great uniter are thrown into camps. (Since I know you finished the series based on the xmas tree in the vid I'll add more) In later episodes it is mentioned how those of a different race are also thrown into camps. Korra is officially suffering from Shell Shock, what in modern day is known as PTSD. Something with no cure she'll live with the rest of her life. Invasion of a free country will come. New types of weapons are being used including a super weapon that poses similarities to the atomic bomb. Hell even Varrick had a bit of an Oppenheimer moment realizing his own invention is deadly and shouldnt exist. So many similarities yet still so unique to its own world. I love this so much!

Finally reactors who give Kuvira credit, usually when people get to these episodes they act like Korra is fighting and losing against a random background character from Zaofu when Kuvira might be the best metalbender we've ever seen (Toph invented, but just like Hama her technique evolved so there are better benders in the future), she is better than Lin and Su who we thought were the best metalbenders.

Can I just say how much I LOVE Korra's development throughout the series? Season 1 Korra wouldn't hesitate to fight, now she's trying to talk through problems first. That's usually why I get so frustrated with haters of the show who claim Korra had no character development. Kuvira and Bitar Jr's relationship does feel really weird once it's found out that she's their adoptive sister.😬 It's not only messed up that she's doing all of this to her family, but I think it's also just as messed up that Su didn't try to reach out to Kuvira. We've seen how she is with her kids, but in flashbacks between the two of them, it feels like just a work relationship, rather than a mother/daughter one. I just feel like Su shares some of the blame for how Kuvira turned out. 🤷‍♀

Despite how kuvira turned out, I think she's the kind of person who has a "too much" to prove. She is a "courageous woman" after all (even if she is acting like a dictator), like her namesake (supposably, kuvira is supposed to translate that in Hindi, but All I got from Shona translation is "to boil".

@@BlueRoseWolfieWhich is hilarious because she was willing to go metalbending Splinter Cell to 86 Kuvira under cover of night but, like Kuvira said, was never once willing to step up and do anything for the state of the Earth Kingdom. With her resources, Su could have done what Kuvira did in half the time with no muss, no fuss, and then handed the keys to the kingdom back, all while having Junior and Kuvira by her side. She was willing to let everything around her go to shit, let Kuvira do her thing for years as well, but then decided it was time to break treaties and commit assassinations the literal *day* it hit her doorstep. Su, frankly, can fuck off. And the fact that she never cops it or is called out on it by anyone other than the villain...Lin was right.
@BlueRoseWolfie
@BlueRoseWolfie 3 ай бұрын
@@Mrryn People forget that Su was the bad kid of Toph's 2 kids. Su had a bit of classic youngest sibling syndrome. Su is stubborn, to the point of entitlement. She did not have structure, so she grew into a pseudo gang lifestyle. Problem is she was never punished till it was too late. Oh now that she has gotten wild enough to bring shame to her mother and sister suddenly they want to reign in her freedom? That's all she has, her friends that give her a false sense of family and her freedom. This was her mentality, she didnt realize any seriousness till she injured Lin. What happens? She is sent off to her grandparents. Which sounds like she didnt spend much time there before being of age to travel the world. By the time we meet her she is a much older adult. She has matured some yes, she has developed her own structure and gathered her own people to live peacefully yes, but it was always on her terms. She was never interested in politics, nor doing anything more then dealing with her people. The most she did in politics was playing fairly with the status quo. On one hand it means she would not be the type to force her will beyond her home. But it also meant she wasn't willing to help. With Kuvira she mostly behaved like the president of Capital City, just plug your ears and think everything will go back to normal when the young king is of age. Su never wanted responsibility, because she saw it as a negative, based on her observation of her mother who was too busy to raise her, and her stuck up sister who seemed never happy. She always viewed freedom, especially from responsibility, as what would make her happy. Kuvira coming after her home, threatening her family, that triggered something deep within her. It brought her back to her childhood, with how she spent years enjoying freedom, till someone comes along to try and control her. Add to it a huge sense of betrayal. She grew up with a gang mentality, and a lot of gang stories have it where any betrayal is met with severe backlash. So her gut reaction was to do what she knew, without thinking of the consequences and what could happen if she succeeded. Saying Lin was right isn't entirely correct, because it wasn't a black and white situation. Nothing is ever simple, everything is more complex then it seems. At the time Lin was calling her out, Su was in the right. She had settled down from her wild ways, married, had children, raised them. She had founded her own city, welcomed people with a focus on mastering metal bending and art. She played well enough with the status quo that there was no problem with her lifestyle then. She was at peace, she even made peace with her mom. Lin didn't want to acknowledge she changed and matured on her own terms, in that Lin was in the wrong. Which is why they ended up making up. If Zaheer never killed the queen, no one would question or put any blame on Su. But Zaheer did kill the queen, he broke the status quo. Su's peaceful existence she was so happy to keep would of gone with it so she focused on protecting her own and staying within her little world. She reverted back to her childhood. That is when Lin became right partially.

Yeah, an interesting thought to have, when Bolin said Kuvira and Korra are alike... Remember in Season 2 when Korra wanted to subvert the military chain of command of Republic City in order to help her people in the civil war? Kuvira pulled it off in Season 4, subverting Zaofu's military for her own purpose and helping the Earth Kingdom in its time of need.

He was led down the wrong path by Amon and thought his own daughter was aiding the very people who "killed his wife/her mother". so while it's very obvious to the rest of us that what he was doing was wrong, it wasn't so clear to him in those moments. at the very least, man owned up to his mistakes and apologized, and made it clear he doesn't expect to be forgiven.

This is perhaps an unpopular opinion but Sui... she is just the worst. The Earth Kingdom was tearing itself apart, and Complete Anarchy reigned, we saw just hours in the entirety of Ba Sing Se was burning to the ground and people were looting everything of wealth. That didn't stop after the first night, first week, first month. People were dying as the world was reduced to Might makes Right. So the leaders of the world approach Sui. She's respected, the leader of a successful city, and has a strong Pedigree to *not take power* but to help little Ping from dying in a gang war between recently formed criminal empires in the ruins of Ba Sing Se. Just stop the riots and widespread anarchy until we can reinstitute the Royal Family. But no, her weird hang-up on not taking power she thinks Anarchy is much more preferable. This means that Kuvira, respected in Zhao Fu maybe and recognized by the Guards, has to take the reigns and try to *STOP THE NATION FROM KILLING ITSELF* But unlike Sui she doesn't have a pedigree, no recognition, and no support from the World Leaders so she has no choice but to enforce order through a literal Iron Fist. Without force, she would never have been able to get this far. Is how she handled things right? No. But her intentions were good. Enforce order upon the nation and because she can't police every place at once she has to crack down on dissidents by means of labor camps. Kuvira made Hell through her good intentions. But she didn't have to. It could have gone SO MUCH SMOOTHER if frigging Sui Beifong, a possible Red Lotus sympathizer, would rather let the Earth Kingdom fall and stay in Anarchy rather than take power until the royal family could return. Edit: Not to mention, her first thought upon seeing an Army was "Let's have the Avatar commit a mass murder" and her second was "Let's commit a little murder in the middle of the night".

I don’t think the avatar is supposed to bring peace. The avatar brings balance and peace is just a byproduct. At least that’s what I think because every avatar has to fight and that’s not very peaceful. They fight for balance.

This season was absolutely rocking until the resolution. Kuvira is nothing like younger Korra and sympathy was absolutely the wrong approach. I get that TV-14 has limitations, but she was more psychopathic than S1 Hiroshi whose partial redemption actually made sense.

"All the villains in Korra are so good!!" I cannot take that seriously when you show a picture with Unalaq there. Bro SEEMED like an interesting enough villain at first but then his motivations just boiled down to wanting the spirits to be free and for the world to be filled with darkness and for Vaatu to corrupt everything.... For some fucking reason. All so he could be the Dark Avatar.... And even his children could die and he couldn't care less. Literally the definition of a terrible villain.

Vaatu corrupting everything wasn't his intention IIRC; Vaatu just took advantage of their union to do so (who being the prime force of evil, isn't surprising). Unalaq more wanted a Dark Avatar as a counter-force to the Avatar so as to restore (what he thought was) balance, much as he thought that not having the spirits around was an imbalance, or so was the general idea. ^Reasonable enough motive on paper, only issue is that - like other villains - it completely overtook all else/he was going about it the wrong way. Not the strongest villain by any stretch, yet imo that makes him decent at worst
