We learned last night during the watch party that the layered voice for Raishan-Thordak was Cree Summer with Levar Burton, and we also learned it was at the behest of Lance Reddick's wife. Lance had met Levar at the Picard Season 3 premiere and had told him what a fan her was. (That was the first time Matt had met Lance in person, as it was also attended by the Critical Role group, as they are good friends with Levar's daughter Mica, who has guest starred on Critical Role and hosted their watch parties for seasons 1 and 2).

Raishan's plan was not exactly explained in the animated series, so here's the details: One of Raishan's biggest strengths is knowing when someone was lying to her. She knew for sure Thordak was telling the truth about knowing a cure. He was defeated and trapped in the Fire Plane by Allura's adventuring party before he gave her the info, so Raishan had to agree to get him out and help him gain power. She realized he was never actually going to tell her AFTER she freed him. Then she decided the only way to get the info was to use necromancy to summon his spirit back and force it to talk. Turns out Thordak knew the location of hiddenly lair that belonged to a super powerful necromancer mage from antiquity. The cure was to become a dracolich (zombie dragon).

Raishan was not a zombie dragon, she became a dracolich. Funny thing is, in the campaign she wanted to do something like this alsom but the party stoped her. Its nice to see what would happen if they could not stop her.

@@heikira438 Not realy, zombies are mindless reanimated bodies that cant think for themselves or do magic. Liches and Dracoliches are former living practicioners of magic, mostly of the necromantic school. They are inteligent and dangerous entities that can still weild the magic they knew in life. They are extremly hard to kill compared to zombies.

Simplest explanation of a "dracolich" to a non-D&D player: it's basically a zombie dragon.

@@heikira438 There is a big difference. Zombies are animated dead that have no self awareness basicaly pupets for the one who reanimated them. Liches and dracoliches retain all their mental abilities: inteligence, personality, magical abilities.

This is such a unique way to tell a story because its "book accurate" in terms of when characters get downed or "die" it's what happened in the Campaign, so while a lot of times it looks like its beefed up for drama.. It's what happened... And in early Campaigns, if a character dies they don't have the spells or items to bring them back, but the further they get into it they can.. But they also cut stuff out, like Keylith tripping over and falling prone into Lava during the Thordak fight, its just replaced with her getting her ass kicked a few times haha

Why Thordak? Raishan was playing a long game. She first put her magic into Thordak when he was alive and trapped in the fire realm. Can readily imagine that the dracolich ritual began then, under pretext of binding him to the soul anchor. Given how little chromatic dragons get along under usual circumstances, that Thordak even consented to her performing any ritual magic on him was pretty unprecedented. If we assume some preparatory component of the ritual has to start when the subject is still alive, there's little chance she would have gotten the cooperation of Brimsythe, Umbrasyl or Vorugal to do so. That is, it wouldn't be that she could have just used any dragon corpse, but rather that she had to use the body of a dragon that had been first prepared in life. It was only Allura & Kima's adventuring party having bound Thordak that provided Raishan the opportunity to exploit.
