So when Critical Role launched the Kickstarter to animate a show, it was for a single 22 minute animated short, with a couple of stretch goals for extras. They decided to ask for $750 000, and gave their backers 45 days to hit that target. Within an hour of launching they had $1m, and at the end of the first day $4m. By the time the Kickstarter ended, they had $11m. And now they have a three season deal with Amazon (and a possible five in total for Vox Machina), and a season dealing with the group's second campaign, the Mighty Nein. Not bad for a birthday present for Liam O'Brien!
@GamerGrovyle Жыл бұрын
Reminds me of the Avatar The Last Airbender roleplaying game. They were going for a 50K $ budget with their Kickstarter over thirty days. I found it halfway through day 2 and it had something like 620K. By the end they ended up with a Kickstarter of 9.5 MILLION $. And that is for a franchise that hasn't had a new series in over a decade.

ngl money wise how the show gonna adapt after the ogl 1.0 fiasco wizards of the coast did. considering after that incident back in jan cr is trying to ditch away dnd brand and terminology. the show however its development got those dnd stuff in it. wonder how they gonna address that in later seasons. i assume mighty nein animated probably is where they will kill off any dnd terminology and fully use new names to get out of the ogl issues. to sorta stupid if reading this and wonder "wait wtf happened to dnd?" if dont know here is the gist. TL/DR: look up a video on it, rec mythkeeper video on the ogl fiasco and better explain things in detail if interested to know wth is going on with the dnd brand and/or the tabletop rpg scene now with how much changed since jan 2023. in easier terms how bad is the ogl 1.0 fiasco: as a react channel you know the name finebros right? if not look up what they try to do with trademarking react and going after channels doing that too. it got that bad and in response they @#$!ed up and tiny react channels got known and reaction business is what it is now. - jan 2023 ogl 1.0 wizards of the coast (owner of dnd) try to revoke the license that is the ogl made since 2000 during dnd 3/3.5e years. license allows creators to use the dnd brand to make stuff out of mainly at time 3rd party material for races, spells, worlds and such. big one that benefited from this is paizo who later made pathfinder with currently 2nd edition is dnd closest competitor now with slowly dragonbane by free league is crawling up that hill too. all 3 uses the classic dice (d4/6/8/10/12/20) with roots to ogl. - so to prevent future competitors be big or small benefit off of the license they try to revoke it and demand ppl that uses the planned (now scrapped) ogl 2.0 have to owe money to wotc. first wave of anger is 3rd party ppl that makes dnd 5e material which is dominating on how much creation there is. then came content creators when reading that depending on how much they made using dnd on any site ALL TOGETHER income they need to owe back to wotc. so youtube, patreon, twitch, ffs even twitter and such if make a cent off dnd using those sites and add all together then they must pay wotc. other stuff from quality control of books been a mess with the big one is spelljammers on ship combat is useless and also the race history for the monkey species... you get idea what went down. - also reason is they want to make onednd/6e but known issue in ttrpg communities is ppl will latch onto past editions due to time and money invest. so wotc plan to urge ppl to jump over is revoke ogl so made 3rd party stuff mostly void and threaten other rpgs that use it in hopes of they slow down making stuff or get rid of that rpg. that and in 2022 they bought dndbeyond (a site/app that helps organize dnd stuff) and begun development of their exclusive dnd only vtt (virtual tabletop, oh and it got beta testing recently... it doesnt sound good at all.) which cost alot of money for both of those. wotc needs to make bunch of money fast and they hoped ogl revoke is their gold ticket... nope! - ppl revolted against wotc with boycotts. dndbeyond lost about 30% of their subs which each sub is i believe 10 bucks so imagine the amount of money gone from there. this boycott also partially went into the dnd movie on ppl dont see it and if you know the film box office well it worked plus timing with two other major films around it. to add the revoke failed due to how the license is design. ryan dancey one of the architects of ogl 1.0 when used to work for wotc back then specifically made it that it cant be revoked. note: he did present it to exec, he confirms in itnerviews the execs at time skimmed it, sign it and done. so yeah aka wotc back then planted a timecapsule to @#$! them 23 years later. - now to the CR part. in response to get out of ogl 1.0 issues you got kobold press (dnd 5e biggest 3rd party publisher), critical roll and even paizo stepping away from the ogl 1.0. first two are making their own rpg systems and paizo is making their own license. on top of that months later paizo announced pathfinder 2e remaster which basically kills off any old dnd terms and framework (magic missile, attack of opputunity, core stat numbers, species names like drow and such) with updated rules and releasing next month. critical roll then is making two of their own systems and slowly phasing out dnd from their shows and plan to bury it for good when they can. plus slowly aid other systems to get noticed like the legend of zelda one shot that uses powered by the apocalypse rules. how that big deal? cause they have to present that pitch and system to NINTENDO for APPROVAL. a massive company approves a product that isnt dnd rules. that is a huge deal. - other stuff related to ppl disliking wotc and judge the brand is the creator summit for dnd became a disaster when dnd reps try to avoid specific questions from creators or answers given gave massive concerns. not dnd related but magic the gathering (also wotc owned) someone got a set early, leaked it without realizing its not the right set, wotc chief of security hired the pinkertons (if know red dead 2, yep same ones! yep still around sadly. oh and chief of security for wotc used to work for them... yep!) go to his home to threaten the guy with his wife and kid present and take the cards away. not long ago for dnd newest book for giants contained ai art. and yes this got a physical release. - so yeah 2023 and for sure 2024 aint good for wotc and the dnd brand is poisoned, prior to ogl it was 90/10 on ttrpg players playing dnd and its not 70/30 which is big on ppl leaving that system and brand for other trpgs. in response ogl and seeing ppl aint tied to using dnd rules and terminology companies are pushing out new products and there been more tabletop rpgs based on video games. fallout ttrpg is getting popular fast and recently final fantasy 14 is getting a tabletop rpg too. rpgs that still stuck to using dnd rule terms like the recently marvel tabletop rpg flopped with bad reception on how rules are designed. going back to critical roll they are staying on that track to get rid of dnd from their shows whenever they can with most likely it will happen in 2024 or 2025.

@@dungeonmaster16Most dnd stuff has already been stripped from the Vox show without major impact though. They don't use names of gods, spells, monsters etc, they skip over fundamental mechanics like spell slots/levels. What do you think would be taken further from M9 to make a big deal of it?
@elbruces Жыл бұрын
@@dungeonmaster16 Matt already removed anything copyrightable by either WotC or Paizo way back when he published the Tal'Dorei guide through Green Ronin Publishing in 2017. Stripping the gods of proper names and replacing them with titles (Pelor -> DawnFather, Sarenrae -> Everlight, etc) and changing a few spell names (the spells aren't even really named in this show). So it's a problem they already took care of before it became a problem. The only monsters that WotC has copyright to are the Illithids (which the show skips past) and the Beholder (which they'll alter enough to avoid copyright claims).

Grog doesnt have anger issues, he has anger solutions. Also dont compare typical D&D sessions to matt mercer sessions, there are multiple voice actors who love making characters and voicing them, which is entertaining but sets a very high standard. As long as you're having fun with your group and you talk out how much rp you want vs gameplay mechanics you'll have fun and as you all get comfortable with it you'll get more in depth characters. There's so many fun little details in this show. For example a lot of the side characters that seem insignificant but have an impact on the story (like the guy hanging up the poster that inspires the group to go on the quest in the first place) are designed to look like Matt Mercer- the Gamemaster of Critical Role. The book in Gilmore's shop: Tusk Love, is actually a reference to the 2nd dnd campaign of CR, where the protagonists found that book and it became a running gag as they had a half-orc (with tusks) in the party. Sylas Briarwood is also voiced by Matt Mercer.

The first two episodes were based on a side adventure from before they started streaming on Twitch. The overall plot had been Demons and Devils fighting in the capital of Emon, but they investigated the disappearance of Fince, and found Krieg's lair. Krieg/Brimscythe is an adult - a young adult - dragon. They get bigger. Now they are heading into a very beloved arc, so hang on for a helluva ride. And when you finish the season, you should check out the Legends of the Cast of the Legend of Vox Machina, and see just who they got to share the voicing duties. Getting David Freaking Tennant as Krieg is only the beginning.

I doubt when Liam O'Brien suggested a streamed D&D game for his birthday with his friends that Critical Role would take off as massively as it did, and yet here we are. Vox Machina - the closest Latin can get to 'Voice Actor' and a more friendlier name than acronym name 'the s.h.i.ts' - in the show start off around the second arc of the first campaign, the Brimscythe stuff being an adventure prior to the streams. The main cast (well, all but one who was cut out of the story) all play as their roles, allowing the antagonists and NPCs to be played by others, and some pretty big names I mean David Tennant played Krieg/Brimscythe, which is still a strong cast of voice actors in its own right. Admittedly it is difficult to try and get up to speed with everything, so sometimes the easiest thing to do is to just jump in and then eventually things start making sense, playing probably takes a bit more dedication but Scanlan's player, Sam Riegel, was completely new to D&D when the streams started, in fact Scanlan's role as a gnome bard was suggested as one of 'the worst character to play as', but the show does help in that regard for the first campaign. A series of the second campaign, The Mighty Nein, is also in the works. The third campaign is still ongoing, but there were also some spinoff campaigns in between (mainly the EXU series) that tie in, and reunion one-shots of the campaign, so as long as it remains successful there will be much more to come.

Oh yes! Strap in guys. Cause this series is absolutely WILD! So fun lil fact: When the cast initially pitched this show, it was only supposed to be a short 22 minute animated special. But after smashing the Kickstarter goals, we expanded it to a full animated series! This first 2 episodes are what that animated short was supposed to be. While the rest of the season is the Briarwood arc of the campaign (in my opinion, one of the BEST bit of the live stream!)

Honestly, I'm 45 seconds into the video, don't think those three reactions will be topped anytime soon. Edit: oh my god, there's going to be SOOO many dolphin noises this series.

You guys are right. You need a good DM to really make your experience a great memorable one. Thankfully Baldurs Gate 3 on PC/PS5 released. It's a great and faithful D&D experience and you don't need a DM! Such a great way to experience D&D

Murder Hobos is a dungeons and dragons slang for a type of player. They literally go from place to place killing everything and don't care about story at all.

Oh I am back with you guys for this ride, especially after their reactions to the LOTR cannon fodder. And you don't need a perfect DM, you just need people you really enjoy being around. I've never had a Matt Mercer or Brennan Lee Mulligan 'level' DM but I've had a lot of fun, even with the worst of the DM's I've had. It can be actively fun to learn the rules together.

Honestly, there isn't one way to DM 'right'. The best DMs find out what kind of game their table wants to play, what genre, what themes, what kind of story their group wants to tell, or if they just wanna go kill a bunch of monsters and loot. And you can absolutely DM with little to no experience. So long as no one goes in expecting Critical Role levels of roleplay, props and storytelling, you can absolutely have a blast just following a pre written module or something.

Y’all might want to make the censor quieter in a show like this, you’ll be using it a lot

i'm not kidding, I know it's a GIANT amount of hours, but crit role is absolutely worth getting into! maybe even react to for the channel! each episode is about 4 hours long so it might be a hassle to turn it into a youtube video, but i would definetely watch it! i would watch if you streamed it as well! the reccomendation is to start at campaign 2 cause the very beginning of campaign one is messy (one player has to leave, there are audio issues and everyone agrees the story really starts at episode 28). but campaign two is tighter and they are a well oiled machine by then. please check it out!
