After everything she went through with her parents there is NO WAY IN HELL Toph would let things get that bad between her and her own kids. @@The1Ryu Nobody's saying Toph would be a good parent because her relationship with her parents was bad. People are saying that Toph would be extremely unlikely to be a bad mother because she reconciled with her parents and underwent a journey of self-discovery in her youth that led her to meaningful long-lasting friendships. People with decent familial relationships, like Toph seems to have had after reconciling with her parents, and good friends don't often turn into deadbeat mothers with multiple kids from different fathers and years long seperations due to deep-seated issues. If Toph never ultimately ingratiated herself into Team Avatar, never became friends with the rest of the group, remained as standoffish to the end as she was at the start and never gave her parents another chance? Sure, I kould see Korra's Toph being a thing in that scenario, but that's just not the reality that Korra's writers were working with. Toph turning out the way she did was essentially her clutching defeat from the jaws of victory. Realistically she had the best chances of becoming a decent parent out of the entire squad with Aang losing his people and father figure, Katara/Sokka losing their mother and not often seeing their father and Zuko's entire family situation being fucked, but she somehow turned out the absolute worst and seemed to exhibit character flaws that she never had as a kid and I just couldn't see her developing.

Did they have a dispute we don't know, or he had a memory lost to not expect Toph to act that way? As for Toph, is she still suppose to over up her emotions by acting tough against her family and friends? does she not learn to express her true emotions and soft side with them already? Her being a police chief is already questionable for someone who couldn't do paperwork as she's blind, why does she deeply wants to be one and prioritize the job over her daughthers? For a character who should know better what the kids really needed since she also desired one as a kid herself, the show better be able to convince the viewers why she ended up that way. That's the problem, when the show just timeskip everything we can only make assumption, there's no clear picture of wtf is going on and why they ended up as a bad parent. Again, that's the show's fault, when they don't explain why a hero fall from grace, which isn't entirely a new concept, just bad execution.

I'm not as critical of the technology jump in Korra as E;R-senpai because of just how advanced the Fire Nation is at the start of ATLA and has had reliably steam powered steel warships for at least sixty years before that. Contrary to what some people may think, reliable and efficient steam power is an advanced technology that requires precision tools and instruments to produce, especially on large scale, anyone who thinks a superheated small-tube boiler coupled to a steam turbine is comparable to a spinning kettle is taking our modern world for granted and probably can't clean the carburetor on a chainsaw to save his life. Anyway, using all metal steam powered warships as a touchstone, HMS Warrior came online in 1860, add 60 years to that and we have the 1920s, and that's being generous. If we consider when we started discarding sails on our ocean going warships, we're into the 1870s and the Fire Nation has already had such ships since at least 60 years before the start of ATLA, so all things being equal Korra should take place in the 1990's. It would explain Sokka's absence since he probably went to live on the moon in the 1960s. That being said, if you're still here, that Forklift fucking angered me beyond all reason! Did we ever see a standard pallet in ATLA?
@matthiuskoenig33782 жыл бұрын
To counter your point, steam power is actually pretty basic, the ancient Greeks knew about it, they, the Romans and medieval people just didn't apply it to anything other than toys, Irl medieval people could of had steam ships. But radios are a completely unrelated tech development. Aditonally you have to remember tech advancing rate is linked to literacy. Something that took centries to get to decent levels even after the printing press. This is because technological advancement is based off of the bouncing around of ideas. Something that happens at greater rates the more people are involved. The rate of technological advancent should thus be similar to the 1400s and we are looking at a slow tech advancement, 1496 tech is largely disinquishable to 1436 tech (the year printing press invented) Korra should still be similar tech level to the last airbender, just haveing fire nation tech more widespread.
@abrahamedelstein48062 жыл бұрын
@@matthiuskoenig3378 I'd just like to preface this with, That it's my God given right to be autistic; Before I go off to counter your point about steam engines, I will concede that technological development is not linear, and it's perfectly feasible to imagine a world where mechanical engineering developed but electricity remained an illusive force, just as an example, which is my reading on the world of ATLA because while the bare basics of steam propulsion might be simple, actually getting an engine that produces any sort of power is hard. Actually, an electric motor is much more simple in raw terms. The Newcomen steam engine is hardly an engine at all, in engineering terms, it's a steam motor and virtually produced no power. The Watt steam engine, the first actual steam engine, with a flywheel and governor assembly was an incredible feat of engineering for the time, and it was still hilariously inefficient and wholly unsuited for propelling a ship. It's like comparing Rudolph Diesel's prototypes of his engine with Modern Turbocharged Direct Injection Diesels. Even when engine AND boiler technology where advanced enough for ships to be outfitted with steam engines, they were still so inefficient that ships mainly relied on sails for cruising and engines solely for manoeuvring. Aside from Monitors, actual Battleline ships wouldn't drop sails from their designs until the 1870s. Let me reiterate, it's easy to build a steam toy, but to build an engine is incredibly hard, I'll just refer you to these videos for a very brief history on the development of naval steam engines; kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZKWZ6Rpq62hma8 kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6fIqpaoZZKKg7c And that's not even taking into account the metallurgy needed to create an all metal warship, like I said, we didn't have HMS Warrior until 1860 and she was much less advanced than Fire Nation fast Cruisers which I'd guestimate to able to make at least 20 knots but probably in excess of 30 since even an older ship with worn out engines can keep up with a sky bison.

@@jackienation12 You're welcome, it was a truly fascinating time of incredible technological leaps, which is why I'm not as harsh on LoK on this front but that being said, Republic City was a mistake and it's truly jarring because there is basically no set-up for it. It actually could have worked, if all the pieces had been laid out correctly, first of all, maybe Korra isn't excited to go to the "big city" because it's so foreign to everything she knows and how much it clashes with her idea of herself as the Avatar and her life in the South Pole. It would have been a perfect time to deploy a wise elderly Chieftain by the name of Sokka whom Korra confides in(because some Friendships are strong enough to transcend life times) tell Korra and us the audience just how much the world has changed in the preceding half a century. It's bizarre how Bryke and the other writers didn't seem to even consider how their portrayals of Aang and Toph would be completely at odds with who they were in ATLA. They helped to create these characters, yet they completely ignored that in favor of realism. And I am also certain it was done to further devalue the cast of the original show in the hopes of putting their new characters above them. Aang became a father who apparently neglected most of his children. Despite that being the last thing he would ever do to his own children after losing the equivalent of his entire race. If anything, Aang would be very invested in his family, regardless of what kind of bender or non-bender they were. Toph became a single mother of two children from different fathers, neither of whom were present in their children's lives. And the implications of what that means never occurred me to when I first saw Book 3 of LoK. Now, I wonder if the writers are implying that Toph was sleeping around and never bothered to stay committed to any kind of relationship. Why? No idea, and neither did the writers apparently.

Look, there was a way to fix the Lin and Suyin business while preserving Toph's personality and character building. You can show how in spite of Toph's best efforts, Suyin's need to be a rebel was stronger and demonstrate that the best efforts and intentions of a loving parent can still fail. Lin's behavior could be explained by her attempt to be the anti-Suyin, devoted to her mother's vision for justice and to keep her mother's attention. However, Toph, being chief of police, was more concerned with trying to get Suyin to stop breaking the law and ignored Lin as a direct consequence; not because she didn't care but because she was trying to keep Suyin out of trouble. This would perfectly explain why Lin ultimately becomes a bitter old woman who not just loses her mother's affection to Suyin (creating the rift), but also loses the man (Tenzin) and comes to hate the concept of family. Suyin is effectively awarded with her mother's attention in spite of doing everything wrong (being a criminal), and ultimately gets the guy and builds a loving family, angering her sister who did everything right and got nothing out of it. At the end of the day, it establishes why the two sisters don't like each other, while maintaining the character building of Toph and explaining how her daughters became who they were decades later.

Honestly, I wish they'd shown Zuko lightning bending in this series. The whole point is Zuko was at war with himself, and his inner conflict prevented him from separating the positive and negative energy around him. Lightning blew up in his face because he didn't have inner peace or total surety of his actions. Now, as a wizened old man who found his place in life decades ago and reconciled his past, there shouldn't be anything preventing him from lightning bending. It’s ironic that zuko who theoretically had the worse parent situation (even if he did have iroh) was somehow the best parent. Katara would not sit idly by while aang neglected his other kids for tenzin. She’d call him out even if aang wasn’t conscious of what he was doing (given the situation of him dealing with the loss of the air nomad culture/nation).

Well yh it kind of made me think a bit, like it's sort of implied that if you don't have a deep and rich relationship with your biological parents then you're doomed to be a bad parent. Like Aang and Zuko had father figures in their lives they looked up, Katara and Sokka had Gram Gram and father after the war, Toph eventually sorted out some stuff with her parents. It takes a village to raise a child and so it's disingenuous to equate early childhood trauma to this means they'll become shitty parents because of it, especially giving how the gaang formed such a close bond so it's even worse cuz they're saying they can make life long friends with people they met in war but will somehow neglect their own flesh and blood. It's not just that Toph being a neglectful parent is unrealistic for me so much as that it's a complete thematic reversal for her character. Like Zuko and his scar, Toph was always a pretty independent person who didn't particularly get along with people because of her blindness. What made them interesting characters was that they grew as people and learned to trust Aang and the others, because they would have been nothing without the people who loved them. They had, you know, arcs. If Toph had neglected her loved ones to preserve her own reputation in the original series, then she would've been confronted with the consequences of her actions, felt remorse and probably made up with whoever she hurt within a single episode. Yeah, that's because it was a kids' show, but also because ATLA was about the importance of family, friendship and compromise, learning how to apologise and treasure your meaningful relationships. But apparently, it didn't really count for anything; Toph would grow up to be a lonely, loveless old spinster who failed in all the major relationships of her adult life, because, what, once you get a job you just stop giving a shit? Why even bother bringing a character back if you're going to throw away all their accomplishments? It's not as if it's some clever deconstruction of an implicit flaw that already existed. it's just cheap drama to make a backstory for two new side characters in unrelated positions of political power who just so happen to be long lost sisters with unresolved mommy issues (totally not Tarlok and Noatak recycled with vaginas). E;R was right, Bryke take any chance they get to tear down the old cast just to beef up their new, more 'mature' characters.

I doubt Aang and Toph would ever turn out this way. Aang would be invested to ALL of his kids; there is no exception. Aang is the Last Airbender. All Air Nomads are born Benders because of the high level of spirituality their people share. Even if they were just Water Benders instead, Aang would still show great interest in them. Katara is the LAST Waterbender in the South Pole. Aang would do his best to recover her culture just as much as he does to his own. Both Katara and Aang would even show them the spiritual significance of Twi and La when visiting Katara's Grandfather-in-law at the North Pole. There is no way Aang would even neglect his children. Toph may have started out as a loud mouth rebel, but she grew up with so many supportive friends and wise individuals she can ask for advice. Toph has the best judge of character in the group, and she just reunited with her father in the comics. There is no reason why she would even turn out this way, especially to her own kids. Toph changed at the end of the series. She used to be in denial with her own problems and get angry when people try to help her, but she later opens up about it (Zuko for instance) and put more faith in her friends to help her with her troubles. So you tell me how can a 12 year old girl getting all this love, attention, and support grow up to be this neglectful, distant, and inconsiderate hardass to her own kids? Calling shitty parenting "realistic" is downright pathetic if you ask me. It reminds me when John Favreau said that his version of Mufasa is more "wise" than the cartoon version because he told his son's life must be preserved to rule the kingdom instead of saying he loves him.

One of the few nice things about Korra is that the future of the world she's destroyed makes for a cool post-apocalypse setting for stories or RPs. In Season 2 episode 2, Raava states that the reason humanity is isolated in tiny towns protected on the back of four lionturtles is because spirits essentially contaminate the world. They leak in through the spirit portals and create the spirit wilds, a place antithetical to human life that inevitably caused humanity's reduction into small, isolated settlements. Wan closes the portals because humankind cannot advance without the separation. Korra not only reopens the polar portals but adds an additional one, then states people just have to deal with it and skips town. The thing is... humanity can't. It's not a matter of humans and spirits working together as you cannot negotiate with these aggressive spirit vines that spread without end or tiny minimally-sentient spirits that mutate humans at a touch, let alone blatantly malicious spirits like Koh. Korra has confidently set the world on a path that will set everything back 10,000 years and cull 95% of all human life... assuming there's still 4 lion turtles in existence and they're still willing to protect a few humans indefinitely. If not, Korra's just set the world on the path toward human extinction, the end. But yeah, it's a cool post-apocalypse setting, at least. Or... approaching apocalypse, technically.

The really weird thing about the new tech situation is how everyone takes it for granted. Even in the west, in real life, everyone was astonished by the invention of the radio, and how useful and fantastical they were. We never stopped taking it for granted, because a new technology was invented every day. Even today, people say things like "Why don't you just access the sum of all human information in your pocket?" when talking about their phones, because everyone knows it's astounding. We'll be presented with a problem and say "How can we use our phones to solve this?" So for everyone in this fantasy world to act like they've had radios since before living memory, and they totally take them for granted, is really bizarre when they supposedly industrialized even faster than we did. Also, their cars looking like Model Ts is really stupid. The Model T looks the way it does because it's a horse carriage with a motor stuck on the front. We've never seen horse-drawn carriages in Avatar, so where did they get this design from? Avatar cars should look like a previously seen commonplace mode of transportation with an engine stuck on it.

People who were around when technology was invented tend to continue being impressed by said technology even much later because they have the context of what it was like before. I mean not only did toph neglect her kids, they don't even have the same dad. Like what kind of mental gymnastics did the writers do in order to think this was OK? Cuz it's "realistic"? Personally my own father is a piece of crap who abused my mom but he also raised me and my sister. He taught me many things that to this day I use in my daily life. I also took lessons on what NOT to do due to his example. It's why I don't even drink alcohol at all and go to church and live a decent life. Suyin shows Korra and Bolin some chunks of raw ore that they use to train metalbenders, and they try to do it (Korra can a little bit, Bolin can't); and the mecha in Book 4 is mostly made out of platinum (a pure metal) specifically to prevent metalbenders from doing anything to it. The issue with the character assassination that is in all these soft reboots isn't that old characters develop new flaws, even serious flaws, years after the original stories. The issue is that this "development" is completely unearned. The writers want you to simply accept that old characters simply changed for the worse over decades off-screen, so that they can use said old and now degraded characters as props in their stories about their new characters. They seem to expect you to make up a progression that makes sense out of whatever nonsense character changes they assert happened. Luckily for them there are legions of mentally ill redditors who will actually do that and then spend many hours defending the show online for free.

@Stinkschiefer That's just the excuse she gave to put the blame on herself; had Toph admitted that she was doing it for Suyin's sake, Lin would have hated them both all the more for it. It's one of those, "I can bear that burden" situations; that Toph was willing to take all of the blame and scorn form her daughters as long as they were safe. Y'all honestly think Toph should have locked up her own daughter? Furthermore, e;r once again left out the resolution for this plotline: that it ate at Toph until the guilt made her retire, and that the sisters and their mother made amends with one another and came to see the reasoning behind each other's actions.
@krraika18472 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there's a lot of this season that doesn't make sense (of course). What always got to me about Suyin and Lin was that (aside from the whole thing being resolved in one day) Suyin never really apologized for scarring her own sister. For a woman going on about moving on and making her peace with her mom, Suyin was always snarky and only ever talked down to Lin. Definitely not getting much sympathy from me. Also, nice idea with the dual-bender. It is something I had been planning with my own Avatar fanfic, albeit for different reasons and via different methods. Suyin really annoyed me, if only because she's treated by the writers as always right, and yet her whole backstory relies heavily on privilege granted by being born into a wealthy family... which is um... an ***interesting*** take. Objectively speaking, she would have been a more interesting character if she'd been sentenced to, like, a year in prison. At least that way, she'd have experienced punishment, but it'd still be a slap on the wrist because of her mother's influence and her status as a child of one of the Gaang. Then her travels afterwards would work as her trying to rediscover and reinvent herself, while also trying to earn a reputation that isn't "Toph's criminal daughter". And if they'd done that, Lin would actually look petty for holding to that grudge. Instead we get Lin justifiably being upset with her only family, but being told to just get over it because it's been three decades.

Never much cared about the characters of this series but of all of them Lin is one of the few I felt some degree of sympathy for, not that she is a super likable character but the amount of crap she had to bear make it perfectly reasonable for her to be as grumpy as she is and an actually consistent character is an small and rare victory for this series.

Does it make sense Toph would be a laid-back, loose, and maybe even a borderline neglectful parent? Yes it does, considering her upbringing. But this doesn't justify her being indifferent to one of her late-teens daughter joining gangs, nor does it justify her cheating the system just so she can have a "clean record (by association)" as the head of police. I could totally see Toph becoming a mother who deeply cares about her children but also doesn't want to come off as overbearing, resulting in her children often doing stupid things to get her attention. But this Toph seems like she's borderline psychotic. It feels like they're butchering their own characters just to come off as a "mature and realistic show". And some people are eating it up.

Haven't watched either ATLA or ATLK but from what E:R has shown us it seems like it would be more in character for Toph to attempt and fail preventing her daughter from joining the gang (she's the police chief, she knows damn well what gang it is and what her daughter is getting into). In the resulting chaos she would then blame everything on herself and resign from her position as police chief.
