The wizzrobes kinda remind me of the sorcerers in the Tower of Druaga, which is an old arcade game made by Namco in 1984. That game is said to be the grandfather of modern action-RPGs, inspiring games like Hydlide, Dragon Slayer, and-yep, you guessed it-the Legend of Zelda.

It was a blast! The hours of exploration was a major part of the appeal. Remember, we were playing very basic games on the Atari 2600 like space invaders, asteroids, pole position, pac man, donky kong. Then all the sudden there was THIS! It was pure magic, man. Pure magic! The hours just exploring and figuring it all out, hour after hour, after school was just amazing! These days and as an adult, you just don't want to do that but back then, man after playing those very basic games, this was just absolutely amazing and we loved the exploration.

It actually sort of irks me when people say that the proper way people played these games back in the day was without guides. The internet wasn't a thing yet, but I owned several guides (some for games I didn't even own) that I bought from bookstores, game stores, or often I would just read gaming magazines at the supermarket while waiting for my mom to finish shopping. Many NES games also came with an advertisement in the box for Nintendo Power and it would have a tiny taste of what sort of tips the magazine offered. One ad had instructions on how to get the first Warp Whistle in Mario 3. Another ad had a tiny map of all the overworld secrets for the second quest of Zelda. At the time, I didn't know what they meant by a "second quest" so I used the the map for the first quest. A lot of the bombable walls and burnable bushes are in the same place in the first quest so it was still very helpful. So yeah, I don't think there is any shame in getting help to play these old games.
@Syntox
@Syntox 4 жыл бұрын
@@jorotroid 💯...Absolute nonsense otherwise. No one who played it in its heyday didn't get hints from SOMEWHERE, either the pre-Nintendo Power newsletter, classmates or the dang toll free helpline
@Mike14264
@Mike14264 3 жыл бұрын
@@jorotroid yeah, for many of these games, sometimes the manual with the hints and the map wasn't enough. Sometimes... you needed the Power. Nintendo Power! And then there were the bombable walls and burnable trees that just lead you to old coots that take your money. Yeah, it was fun to be completely discouraged from exploring. Imagine if that was the first secret passage you find in the game! How would you feel after that trap?
@jorotroid
@jorotroid 3 жыл бұрын
@@Mike14264 Honestly, I didn't really have a problem with the old coots. One problem I have with many later Zelda games is that there comes a point when money doesn't really matter anymore except for some one time key item purchases. In the original game, bombs don't drop often, so buying them makes a lot of practical sense; also shooting arrows take a rupee as well. So you are sort of constantly gaining and losing money in the game. It made it feel like the money actually had value to me. Losing 20 rupees to the old man just wasn't that big of a deal to me. Also there are only like 8 door repair locations while there are 14 secrets to everybody with many other heart container, shops, and gambling's spots, so you're less likely to get the door repair guy in general anyway.

These were my favorite videos from you. So cool! Playing these back in 1986 was pure magic. Can you imagine, all we had before at home was the poor graphics of the Atari 2600 and games like pac man, defender, ET, asteroids. When the Nintendo came out it was mind blowing! This game was so epic, I tell ya. I dunno if you've done Metroid already. Probably but in case you haven't played through Blaster Master, that's another good one! It didn't become as big as Zelda and Metroid because it didn't have a save system! We had to leave the Nintendo on all night and the next day and hope mom didn't turn it off on us by the time we got home from school! hahaha. It's a great game though for those of us who discovered it! It was my #1 NES game and my other favorites, just to help show my style was Metroid, The legend of zelda, SMB (1,2,3), punch out, Adventures of LOLO etc.

If you just want the best metroid, you've got to play the super nintendo version. That one is amazing.

13:15 You get past that Grumble grumble guy by giving him monster bait, that piece of meat you could buy in the shop.

I was that guy that used to rent this game, beat it, then leave all the items and hearts and the death counter at 000 for the next renter. ... You're welcome.

Great playthrough as always Erin. This is one of my favorite games of all time. I am currently playing through it again for probably the 20th time. I've always though dungeon 6 was the hardest. If you want an even bigger challenge, I challenge you to playthrough Legend of Zelda 2: The Adventures of Link. Wow, that is an insanely hard game. I've only beat it once. Its a great game but its just one of the hardest games of all time. Stay safe Erin. ✌

I remember your rage from part 1 of this Let's Play. You said some very evil words! This channel is not kid friendly ...
