There's one thing that I regret that people who didn't play this on N64 will never get to experience: The feeling of having to actively turn your console off when the game left you perpetually on that "The End" screen. There was such a sense of sad but satisfying finality in the game making you do that - no returning to the main menu, no unlockables upon completion - the adventure was over, and that was that.

The way Zelda screams when Link takes a hit always stuck with me. To get to this point, Link has survived literally hundreds of traps and monsters. Every dungeon is brimming with new ways to kill you. Taking damage is nothing to you at this point. But Zelda hasn't seen the shit you have. She never dodged guillotines in the shadow temple, or fought a man-eating dragon, or parried a stalfos' blade. When Link gets slashed by Ganon, Zelda screams. But you just get back up. Because that's what you've been doing since the start of the game. You may not feel like you have the triforce of courage, but to everyone else in Hyrule you're the bravest person that has ever lived.

The post has sadly been lost to the ages and the dozens of other videos of this fight, but I distinctly remember a KZbin commenter once claiming they'd only ever played the original Zelda before this one, he had no idea Ganon was once human, and he'd figured Ganondorf was just supposed to be a referential throwback. He then said when he saw Ganon's name come up for the final showdown that the revelation blew his fucking mind. What I would give to experience Ocarina of Time in a whole new way like that again...
@brianwishon73224 жыл бұрын
That’s pretty rad. OoT was my first Zelda game, but before I was anywhere close to the ending my parents bought me a Legend of Zelda VHS tape from Walmart that had the animated series. Being a 7 year old boy who just got into the Zelda hype, I would spend my time between playing the game and watching that tape over and over. Of course, connecting that Ganon and Ganondorf from only those 2 bits of media was impossible at that age, and I figured they just sounded similar. Next thing I know, I escaped the castle only to be greeted with not only my very first true final boss, but freaking Ganon of all things. That’s when it clicked that the Zelda universe was way bigger than I thought, and that my movie and the game were indeed “Linked” together into something much much larger. Not only that, but OoT Ganon was the coolest boss I had ever seen, and remains as my all time favorite variation of Ganon in the series nearly 20 years later. I’ve since played every Zelda game since then and grew with the series, but OoT will forever hold a special place in my heart because of how it brought me to the series

That's awesome. I know that feeling really well. I had a similar moment when I got to the end of Metal Gear Solid 3. Wasn't keeping up with news or trailers much at the time, so it wasn't until Snake (who I thought was Solid Snake the entire time) lost his eye and put on the eye patch that it clicked. With how similar BB looked and acted like Solid Snake, I never even questioned it till then. I was so mind blown I'll never forget the feeling. "Wait, Snake never lost an eye...." It finally clicked and I lost it.

Child Timeline comes in after The End happens here: warns Zelda about the 7 years of doom, Ganondorf gets arrested, then attempted execution goes wrong which sends him to Twilight til Twilight Princess happens. Okay, there are few things the original N64 version of OoT still has over the 3DS remake/remaster. 1: When Link met Ganondorf in the original, he brandished his sword after Ganondorf mocked him, not before. Kinda messed up the dialogue a bit. 2: When Nabooru was being captured by the witches in the original, the music stopped playing, making it really damn creepy. The 3DS version kept playing which took away the fear factor a fair bit. 3: THIS FINAL BATTLE!!! Now in the 3DS version, Ganondorf is not in shadow like this 8:42 and when he threw his arms back in the 3DS version, he seemed kinda calm about it. Here, it's just a DB explosive kind of movement and intimidating as hell. Plus, the whole battle is in shadow, Ganon is barely seen and is only completely seen when he's properly knocked down. It's amazing how much of a difference that sort of thing can make.

8:17 -- The final boss of Ocarina of Time all these years later is still my favorite of the series. The sense of impeding dread experienced when Link and Zelda hear something in the ruins of Ganon's Tower, the sky going dark, a wall of fire magicking around the ruins, separating Link from Zelda, the mortifying shock of Ganondorf bursting out of the ruins, kept barely alive by the Triforce of Power, the intense horror of seeing him transform into a giant horned pig demon before you as the flames grow higher, the atmosphere growing so dark that you can only see Ganon's eyes shining with the inhuman light shared by other undead creatures like poes, while lightning flashes in the sky above, as if it is the end of the world. It is such a well-realized climax of the story.

Fun Fact: During Ocarina of Time’s development for the N64. One of the ideas was to make Ganondorf a literal giant, the player would scale its body and attack its weak points, but was scrapped due to hardware limitations, and would be so large that it would be impossible to see it’s whole body.

This and Link to the Past have probably my two favorite video game endings ever. Both really felt like you had come to the end of an epic story and you get the full range of emotions. Joy in the celebration that evil was thwarted and all the characters we grew attached to turned out okay, sadness that all the fun of the amazing game was now over, and satisfaction that you had just played one of the greatest games ever.
@magueyeseck73825 жыл бұрын
People of hyrule, you are dancing. If you knew that the land you are all living in would be flooded and the mountain tops turned into island because Ganondorf would come back. Dear link, in the castle courtyard, you're chatting with the princess. Expect your adventure in the world of Termina and after your return, you may be becoming a knight but you'll die, only to come as the Hero's shade to teach your skill to your descendant. Link, win this fight against that demonic boar or else, whether your descendant or reborn, will wear brown sleeves and the upper part of your tunic will have stitches.

i honestly find it very sad how the sages are practically *forced* to continue their duties for the rest of their days, rather than just living their life with their friends and families. i mean, since Ganondorf is stopped before anything actually happens in the Child Timeline, i'm positive that version of the sages never become sages, and live their lives as normal. i just find it so sad, especially since in every other game with sages, the sages do get to return home and continue their lives without having to worry about doing their sage stuff again. this is especially true for Saria and Ruto, since we see Mido and King Zora feeling very upset that they can't see their friend/daughter again. though i like to think that the Adult Timeline sages do actually return home shortly after so it makes me feel better

You know what also sucks? Imagine becoming an adult but still having the mind of a kid. Then getting used to it. Becoming more mature. Then having to go back to being a kid again...whew! That's some psychological damage right there.

This is a game and an experience that never will be created again. This game was made in a time where 3D in gaming was in it early stages. But Nintendo perfected it with this game. This game is a core memory for many people who grew up within the the leap from 2D to 3D. This is something that will never happen again. And i'm proud that i have experienced it. I was 11 when i first finished the game legit for the first time. Played it a lot since, but never to the end. As of today 12.01.25 i did it. I will for now, not touch this game in 25 years.

Idk if this is obvious to everyone who beat the game but I never heard anyone talk about that if you stay on the The End title card long enough you'll occasionally hear the Scarecrow's song (assuming I guess that you did that side quest prior to beating the game) being played in different midis. The ones I heard were from the Ocarina and Malon but there were others I didnt recognize as well.
