Growing up in NW Oregon, I have been a Blazer fan my entire life.... I can confidently say, Arvydas Sabonis is THE most underrated/underappreciated/underrespected player in NBA History. IF Sabonis has the opportunity to play in the USA as soon as he was skilled enough, his career and the history of the NBA would have been MUCH different. First off...yes, he did get injured. Guess what...virtually EVERY great has been injured. The big difference with Sabonis was the medical treatment he received before coming to the NBA. Had his injury been provided respect and top-notch rehab the world had to offer, we would have seen a much different Sabonis. With that being said, Chicago wouldn't have had such an easy ride to the top....and, maybe they would have beaten Portland still...but the world would have seen, MJ wasn't the only basketball god of the 90's. The One & Only....#11....Arvydas Sabonis

@donwhiteley32934 жыл бұрын
You could make an argument that Sabonis did change the legacy of Michael, Larry, and Magic. Arvydas Sabonis is the single biggest reason the Dream Team was created in the first place. Entering the 1988 Olympics, the US Men's team had only lost 1 game in Olympic history, and that was a game where the team did not play well and had a very controversial call go against them at the end. Sabonis almost single-handedly led the USSR team past the David Robinson-led US in the 1988 semifinals (Mitch Richmond, Danny Manning, Hersey Hawkins, Dan Majerle, and Stacey Augman were just some of the other future NBA stars on that team). Anyone watching that game realized that the USSR team was the better team and Sabonis was far and away the best player on the floor. Neither Robinson (you know, 91-92 NBA Def Player of the Year and 4x All-Def 1st Team) nor anyone else had an answer for Sabonis. USA Basketball decided to create the Dream Team in response to that loss. Since the Dream Team has become a legend unto itself and became a part of the Legacy of all the players involved, Sabonis did in fact change the legacies of those greats.

Sabonis was Jokic before Jokic but in a 7'3/7'4 frame! They said he was 7'4 but due to so many surgeries from injuries he actually shrunk to 7'3! I watched a NBA TV special on him from last December, and they were talking to Brian Shaw who was on the 1986 U.S. FIBA World Championship team when they played against Sabonis, and he said that he was just as athletic as David Robinson! The footage from that game speaks for itself too, he absolutely dominated Robinson and the U.S.! Arvydas has been one of my all-time favorite players for quite some time. And with the NBA 2K21 Next Generation, I was finally able to create a young Prime Sabonis type build!! Love that you showed so much love to him, more people need to know about his game! Great video Dom!!

Great video! Thanks for educating the youngsters who have never heard or seen Sabas. He is my favorite player of all time! In his prime he really had no weakness in his game. And as a crippled old NBA player was still an above average Center. At age 40 he was Euroleague MVP! Such a fun player to watch, with his fancy passes, unorthodox crafty shots, and the ability to step out and shoot it from distance. With all do respect to Bill Walton, Sabas is the best passing big man of all-time. I think Bill would agree. Thanks again for the great video!

Darrel Be first person that came to my mind too
@danielyankun36057 жыл бұрын
Darrel Be Boston would've likely even won it in 87 but because they had no other options McHale had to finish the regular season on a broken foot and it never healed, if Bias was alive he would've started and McHale could sit out and let his broken foot heal. Then in the Finals the Celtics wouldn't have had a 28ppg scorer limping up and down the court all game, and in the game Magic hit the skyhook to win it, McHale was like 2 inches from blocking it jumping off his broken foot, if he wasn't injured he definitely would've blocked it. McHale was just entering his prime but was never the same after the injury.
@random52997 жыл бұрын
Darrel Be Would've depended on how he progressed because he wasn't a sure fire thing. Bulls would've probably still dominated the 90s.

The most simple comparison I heard about Sabonis was that he was like Bill Walton with 3-point range. Had Walton not suffered so many injuries, basketball from the mid 70s to mid 80s might've looked different, too. All this being said, I think Sabonis might've put up Kareem-like numbers, but a decade later and an even more competitive landscape. Teams would've had to put smaller, less physical forwards on him, but on the defensive end, I think he would've dealt with lots of foul trouble, too. Unfortunately, it's all speculative.

I remember watching him from the 80's when he was playing some of the international games. I was an Atlanta Hawks fan back then and I remember that draft because of the legendary Jon Konkak. If he )Sabonis) would have been able to play for Atlanta back then with Wilkins, Willis, Rivers, Carr, Levingston, and some of the athletes they had it would have been different in the east. Boston doesn't win that Game 7 because the Hawks win it in Game 6 (still sore about that). He was definitely one who would have done a lot better in the league if he had been able to join earlier. And with modern medicine in the US compared to the USSR those injuries probably would not have affected him like they did.

Put the height (Legit 7 3",), Yao Ming's Shot, Walton or Gasol Basketball IQ, and Shaq rebounding skills add to all of this David Robinson´s jump ability and finally Tim Duncan´s coordination and you got Arvydas Sabonis, with 25 Years. He was a victim of the political situation in the USSR and of course the injuries ´cos at the time that he lands on the NBA his legs were demolished, and he was lame for a professional athlete level. Thank you... you don't know how much I appreciate your ability to shed light on players and teams throughout NBA history. Too many false narratives are created by the media in recent memory, as well as lazy NBA fans not willing to to spend the TIME to LEARN. Keep up the great historical videos.

Well how can we know? The guy didn't play pro. For Sabonis, he DID dominate the best big men in meet-ups in international competitions, so the evidence is here.

This video is great. I remember watching Portland in the early 2000s. All the broadcasters talked about was how good he was. I had no idea it was like this

Excellent video. Prime and injury free Sabonis would have been a treat to watch against Ewing, Robinson, Olajuwon, Abdul Jabbar, Parrish, Mourning, Shaq. Watch out for Jokic. He's looking like Sabonis 2.0. Hopefully he can develop a bit more...

I'ts actually Nurkic who will pick up and carry the torch Sabonis left behind. Denver certainly screwed themselves letting him go. Double down on it that they let him go to the best possible destination for his timeline and skill-set, not to mention they gave up what will most likely be the #19 or 20 pick in an incredibly deep draft. So basically Nurkic and Justin Jackson or the next Dennis Rodman.... Mr Jordan Bell for Mason Plumlee. Denver just handed Portland the map to direct them to where their championship lies. I will say this though. Jokic is an amazing player with an uncanny ability to pass the ball. He can score and rebound as well too. What I see from him that gives me pause though, is his inability to impose his will on the game itself. I just dont see the passion of a winner in him. It's like he want's people to know how brilliant a talent he is but not for the opposing team to see he's there to murder everything, dominate, and win. When he and Nurkic faced off for the 1st time I expected it to be a titanic battle and a big statement for one of the two. Jokic seemed to succumb to the will of Nurkic and didn't put up much of a resistance. Nurkic had his way with Jokic and imposed his will from start to finish completely dismantling him and Jokic seemingly never threw a counter-punch, instead electing to concede the game to Jusuf and the Blazers. All the flashy plays and razzle-dazzle are fun and great for entertainment purposes but I like a center who has a lot of toughness, mental strength, and a strong will to win as well as the skills it takes to get their team the W.

Another interesting fun fact: The year before Jordan was drafted, the Bulls drafted Enis Whatley. One of the guys who were drafted after Whatley was CLYDE DREXLER. Yep. The Bulls could have drafted Clyde the Glide! Of course, had the Bulls done that it is less likely the Bulls pick MJ the following year. Thanks the basketball gods for BIG favors!

Damn I always loved Sabonis when he came in to the league, because he was so unorthodox and unique. I never really knew how much potential he had or how he could have changed the league. This was a great video. I admire him even more now
