Hello Dave, Excellent video, as always... Okay, so here’s the trick that I’ve learned after over 20 years of not being happy with the sound of a DS-1. 1. Dime the level to max 2. Set the tone to the middle position 3 . Set the distortion to the minimum setting 4. Slowly bring up the distortion, and when you hear bees, adjust the tone accordingly 5. It is a very finicky device, but the key is to keep the level at max, while very carefully adjusting the other two knobs 6. If you dime the distortion initially , it is almost impossible to get a good tone. I generally never go above 1:00, and I’m usually lower than that. 7. It really needs to feed the input of a tube amp. I have yet to be able to get a SS amp to sound okay with this pedal. Give it a go - just adjust the tone and distortion slowly. I’d bet you can find some tones that sound great.

I bought one the year they came out and it's still on my pedal board. It's the velvet zipper of distortion. I've used it with a Blues Driver and GE7 eq to get all my gain tones live for many decades. Putting the EQ after it and I'll bet you can get anything you can get to the Marshall pedal Glad it's still getting love 40 some years later.

Hello Dave I hope this comment reaches you well. I also am a lover of the ds1 I have three drives; (ds1, Marshall bb2 and a custom made jtm45 in a box) and a chorus on my board that I use in conjunction with a headrush mx5 which I plug straight into my blues junior to give me a bit of flexibility. It's a hybrid rig and I Love my current setup. the ds1 works perfectly for anything 90s or early 2000s as long as you know how to dial it in

Hello David, I'm João Victor from Brazil! I'm happy to say that I love your channel and I've been following your videos for a few years. I started my studies in music listening Peppers, being inspired by Frusciante and you helped me a lot, but... I became a bass player. Currently I dedicate myself completely to studying the "Flea" way of playing bass. I intend to go back to studying guitar when I have the money to buy good equipment (it's quite complicated around here). Thanks! Obrigado!

I need to grab one again - I remember pairing this with my Orange Crush 35 and I did like it. I actually only sold it in a weird "well I have the Katana now ... and that has a DS1". About 6 months ago I got a SD-1 (the other "1st" pedal I got) and did swap it for the Wampler Triumph - as I wanted the extra EQ options. I could very much see the DS-1 rotating in the spot of my Boss Fuzz or Behringer Fuzz depending on how gnarly I want to go. I may even treat myself to the waza version now I think of it, little 40th gift to myself!

I love the Boss DS-1. I remember using a Sunn Model T with two Orange 4x12s (the ones with the Celestion G12-K100s, 400w each with a 150w Model T pushing them... Oooouf) and my trusty heavily modded Fender Telecaster '72 Deluxe in Drop A tuning for Doom and Drone, letting huge riffs just drone out with a single strum & letting them shake the room was insane. Amps make the pedal sound, something with high wattage, 100w and above with high clean headroom really suits the DS-1, or at least for what I play. Such a great pedal.

Incredible playing Mate! Really enjoyed seeing how you used the ds1. First borrowed one from my uncle years ago who think got it modded years ago so I think it has more low end less mids and volume. Got it back a few months ago and it’s definitely become one of my most used pedals. To me at least it definitely sits in between a fuzz and crunch/Marshall distortion. I also have the tone really low and crank both the volume and gain on full which was actually inspired by your ds2 settings. I definitely think my ds1 works the best with other gains and it’s the first pedal I usually plug into atm (kinda like the ds2 on your board) I really enjoyed hearing it with the jackhammer and gotta say hearing it with the ds2 sounded insane! Can’t wait to see you complete the all boss pedalboard!

If they played this for me blindly, I would think it was one of the Pink Floyd tracks. David Gilmore vibe very much. I have long noticed that you don’t just play, but communicate through music, convey emotions. Not everyone can want this I would be glad if you, as before, posted educational content on the game (certain passages like slane castle jam or tricks and techniques Frusciante/Hendrix and etc.) Thank you

Bought mine in 2016 brand new. I got one of the last batches of the through hole circuit boards, before BOSS went all surface mount crazy with many of their pedals. I don't plan on modding mine, because of that change. Sounds fine to me, not quite like the vintage ones from the 1970s or 80s but it does the job for what it is. I often use it as an overdrive and I do agree with setting the tone at 9 o clock. I do find some uses for the upper ends of the tone spectrum, can get some nasty, fuzz like noise for some things.

As a Boss DS-1 constant user, and someone who uses that pedal as his main distortion sounds, i find it sounds best just as Dave has his set up, gain all the way up , and tone around 9 o'clock (the volume knob for me is always at 12 o'clock because of those creatures called neighbors haha) but i kinda disagree with the leaving the tone set all the time to a certain setting, ive noticed that the lower the gain is, it tends to get darker and therefore i usually compensate by turning the tone knob a bit higher, but dont get me wrong, that tone knob even with the lowest gain setting doesnt go above 11 o'clock, that tiny bit of range from 9 to 11 is enough to compensate the whole dial of the gain knob from all the way down to cranked, i wanna recommend to you, Dave, trying that method i use, perhaps it wont work for you cause you obviously aint me nor you have my gear but perhaps if you ever get around the idea of using the DS-1 as a lower gain pedal, cheers for such a great video as always man! Hope youre doing good and have a nice day!

The DS-1 was my very first guitar pedal (alongside my Boss OD-1X) that I got back when I was about 13 or 14 (I started playing when I was 10 and I’m 24 now) and it’s still a favourite of mine that I still love going back to, I still have mine at the same settings Kurt Cobain used for Smells Like Teen Spirit because I had an old issue of Guitar World from a few years ago that documented popular guitar effects and famous songs that used them (alongside the same setting that were used) and Kurt was the example for distortion so ever since then I’ve kept those same settings on my DS-1 and it still sounds great. Definitely a classic pedal and one of the most iconic as well, love it

I don't know how true this is but there are 2 different versions of the Boss DS1 pedal. The original and a new version. From what I have been lead to believe there is a difference in sound between the 2. Apparently something to do with circuit design. The way to tell them apart visually is the old has silver screws and a long dash between the DS and the 1. The new has black screws and a short dash between the DS and the 1.

as for turning the tone not above 9 o'clock: i have had 3 DS-1s in total and the one i have right now for whatever reason does not go into the wasp mode if tone is between 9 o'clock and 12 o'clock. i dont know why. it does not have the mod done that tames the tone knob and has been made in september 2011 according to the serial number. maybe it is faulty, maybe they vary a bit. the other two DS1s i had certainly went into wasp mode immediatly if you turned the tone past 9 o clock

Sounds great as usual! If I had to choose I'm going with the SD 1 over the DS but there's no doubt that Boss makes incredible, consistent pedals. Love em. Edit: I have a DS1 with a Monte Allum mod, takes some fuzz out and gives more definition. You have to mod it yourself, he sends the kit. Not bad since you can get these things fairly cheap thanks to Cobain

i dont know, i think there are much better circuits then this very old one. I had one and i never found a situation for it. If Hendrix would be alive, he would try every new pedal and he would change and search for new sounds, he would evolve. That is inovation and he was ahead of his time. Anyways, love your playing and video making ;]] its just a really joy watching.
